Thomas Shiflett b.c. 1736 - 1737, in Virginia. Between 1757 - 1758, Thomas is listed on the rolls of Capt. Charles Lewis as a planter, born in VA, who entered service in Louisa Co., and is now age 21, with "Lusty good Limbs [and] Black Hair". See French and Indian War Documents. From other references, it appears he was a blacksmith.

Orange Co., VA, d. 1829 Orange Co., m (1) unknown (John is listed on the 1782 Orange Co. tax list with 3 white souls); m (2) 27 Oct 1796 Orange Co., VA to Susannah "Suckey" Davis b.c. 1778 (census records) VA d. aft. 1860; she was the d/o Lewis and Sarah Davis (see below). The Orange Co. Deed of April 23, 1803 states: "John Shiflett (Thomas's Son) and his wife Susanna of the first part and John Snow, of the second part" Between 1782 - 1795, John could have had 4 or 5 more children before his marriage to Susannah -- we now know one of them was Jacob Shiflett. It appears that John had children over a 40+ year period. So in 1782, we know he was married with one child, which gives us an estimated birth date of around 1760. In 1800, John patents the same land his father Thomas had surveyed in the 1770's (see Deeds One).

In 1998, Larry Shifflett submitted documentation to provide very strong evidence that Olley Shiflett and the Thomas Shiflett who m. Lucy Ham were children of Richard and Elizabeth. See "Early Shiflett Project.
Mary Jane Shiflett and Rueben Shiflett: There are discrepancies on Reuben's marriage certificates. See Rockingham marriages. However, M. Jane's death certificate, which Reuben reported, states that she was the daughter of Larkin and Anna. She was not included in the list of heirs for Stephen Palmer Shiflett in the chancery suit because Turner was a witness against her in Reuben's divorce suit.

In the name of God Amen I Lewis Davis of the county of Orange and state of Virginia being in perfect health and sound memory but calling to mind the uncertainty of human life, do make this my last will and testament and first

I commit my soul into the hands of Almighty God that gave it meaning in his mercies and the mercies of my ---- for all my sins passed and first I commit my body to the earth ---- ---- in a decent manner at the discretion of my executors hereafter mentioned and --- my personal estate I bequeath and dispose of in the following manner

Impremise Item I lend to my wife Dosha Davis all my real and personal estate during life remaining my lawful widow A negro girl named Nancy I give into my wife --- --- to do with as she thinks proper and all the estate that my wife had when we were married my will and wish is that she shall dispose of it as she thinks proper, my wishes ----- my estate appraised until the death of my wife, at her death I will and bequeath my estate in the following manner

Lewis Davis died in 1826 and his wife, Theodoshia d. prior to 13 Mar 1830 when her estate inventory was taken. Lewis Davis' first wife's name (and the mother of his children) may have been Sarah. In Orange Co. Will Book 6, pg. 373-374, Lewis Davis' will is recorded a second time. Will Book 8, p. 270-273 records the settlement of the estate account by Howard Shiflett as follows: The estate of Lewis Davis, deceased, to Howard Shiflet administrator. . .account consists of sale and cash received by the executor August 21, 1833. . .settled 21st August 1833 by George S. Blakey, James Beazley, James Simms. At a court held. . .27th August 1833. . .report returned and ordered to lie. At a court held. . .25th November 1833. . .report not being excepted, same approved and ordered to be recorded.

  Orange County Deed Book 23, page 16, there is a deed for 98 1/4 acres from John Shiflett to John Snow dated April 23, 1803 as follows:
  "John Shiflett (Thomas's Son) and his wife Susanna of the first part and John Snow, of the second part--------". This deed has been entered on our deeds page.
  
  A second piece of evidence is found in this deed, where one of the points on the land description is "top of the mountain". This point is also found in the land Howard (Coward) sells when settling John's estate. See deed, below.

  In the name of God . . . I John Shiflett ---- of the county of Orange and state of Virginia being in sound mind and knowledge and ----- be ---- of life and the certainty of death do make, constitute, appoint and ordain this to be my last will and testament revoking all others.
  
  First of all I give unto my beloved wife Suseaner the tract of land that I bought of Thomas Snow, the tract whereon I now live during her life, and after her death the said tract of land to be set up at the highest bidder and sold and the money equally divided. Also the household and kitchen furniture and her choice of two cows and five? sheep, also the stock of hogs and still and one horse.
  
  Second. My will is for my lower tract of land to be divided by which is called the old horse branch and that to stand as the line without any surveyor and both sides of said land and said branch to be set up and sold to the highest bidder in a credit of twelve months with giving land and approved security.
  
  Third my will is that the tract of land I bought of John Snow under the foot? of Rocky mountain whereon William Knight now lives shall be set up and sold to the highest bidder on the same terms as above and if my wife should get in distress the money that this tract of land brings whereon the said Knight now lives is to be given up to her for her relief.
  
  Fourthly and lastly. My will is also that all the balance of my mountain land, in Orange and Albemarle should be set up and sold to the highest bidder on credit of twelve months by their giving land with good security and out of that money all my just debts to be paid and the balance if any to be equally divided amongst all my chilren also the lower tract of land all the money ---- ------ ----- to be equally divided and all that my wife can make after my decease shall be at her own will to do as she pleases with. I also decree that my son Coward Shiflett shall stand the executor of all my estate and my wife Suseanor. In witness whereof I have offered my hand and seal.

  In 1831 Howard was closing the estate of his father, John. Note the reference in the will above to the land that William Knight currently lives on. (Is this the same William Knight who witnessed Lewis Davis' marriage to Theodosha Ham?) Howard did not sell the entire tract of land in the transfer below, but apparently let Wm. Knight keep his section.

  This Indenture made and entered into this 10th day of December 1831 between Howard Shiflet Exor. of John Shiflet decd. of the County of Orange and State of Virginia of the one part and John Shiflet of the County and State aforesaid of the other part. Witnesseth that the said Howard Shiflet for and in consideration fo the sum of one hundred and thirty six dollars and ninety two cents lawful money of the Commonwealth to him in hand paid by the said John Shiflet the receipt of which is hereby acknowledged have bargained and sold and by these presents doth bargain and sell unto the said John Shiflet his heirs and assigns forever a certain parcel of land lying and being in the County of Orange containing one hundred and twenty two and 1/4 acres and bounded as follows. Beginnning at the mouth of brier run up said run 120 poles to a Locust N 67° W 57 poles to three Chesnut oaks on the top of the mountain; thence with sd. line N 36 W 71 poles to a chesnut oak N 67 E 40 poles to a gum N 60 E 30 poles chestnut No 17 E 10 poles to an ash in a branch thence new lines N 68 E 25 to Gum pointers N 43 E 65 poles to a gum on the bank of sd River down sd.
