Austin Garrison of Albemarle County, Virginia

Comments: I have now found concrete evidence that proves Austin's parentage.Ê His death certificate lists his parents as William and Sally Garrison and states he was born in Albemarle Co., VA William Garrison is the son of William Garrison, the first Garrison documented in Albemarle, who bought property in Free Union in Albemarle County in 1771.Ê Sarah Jane Garrison is the daughter of Achilles Garrison who also bought property in the Free Union area in the early 1770s.

James Austin Garrison and his wife Sarah Jane Taylor are buried at the top of Brown's Gap, on land that is now part of Shenandoah National Park, but was once Garrison land. On the 1850 Albemarle Co., VA census, Eliza Taylor age 60 is listed in their household. Sarah Jane Taylor Garrison, and her daughter Sarah, were midwives. They delivered many of the babies in the area.

Austin enlisted 12 Mar 1862 in the Albemarle Artillery, was listed as deserted on 31 Oct 1863, rejoined under arrest 28 Feb 1864, and served 6 months hard labor for his desertion. In May 1900 in Albemarle Co., VA, Sarah Jane filed for a pension on Austin's Civil War service. She stated she was 77 years old. The tax officer certified she was listed on the tax rolls with a 1/3 [interest?] in [the] estate, valued at $33. Sarah stated that Austin served in the Albemarle Artillery under 1st Capt. Wm. H. Southall and 2nd Capt. Jas. M. Wyatt and that he enlisted in Mar 1862, and came home on sick furlough in Oct or Nov 1864 and never recovered. Her pension request was approved. See: record at LVA.
