Comments: At this point in time, we can find no documentation to support Absalom having a wife prior to his relationship with Winny Herring. Prior to Mary Herring's research, there existed a possibility that his first known child, Nancy Shiflett who m. Robert Powell, was the issue of Absalom and a first wife since she always used the Shiflett name and the others used Herring at times; but that was proven untrue by Mary Herring, when she found the Albemarle deed of 3 Jan. 1860 in which Nancy's children are listed as heirs of Louden Herring/Shiflett along with his other siblings, some of whom were already documented as children of Winny Herring and Absalom Shiflett. The people listed as heirs of Louden Herring are: "Nicholas Herring and Nancy Herring his wife, Jacob Herring, Calvary S. Shiflett and Elizabeth Shiflett his wife, Melissa Herring, Amanda J. Herring and Polly Shiflett, wife of Stephen Shiflett, Honorias Powell, Wm. L. Powell of the first part and Bland Herring of Albemarle County of the second part"

There is one problem. Under the terms of Louden's will, proved 7 Apr. 1856, all estate was to go to his daughter, Arminda -- she would be his first heir, but his wife had the right to sell the land and relocate. Did Lucinda sell the land to Louden's brothers & sisters, who in turn sold their shares to their brother, Bland?

Food for thought: from looking at census records, Nancy (their 1st known child) was b. in 1815. Two census records support Absalom being b. between 1775-1780, making him 35 to 40 years old at the time of her birth. While this is not impossible, it still leaves open the possibility that there are earlier children prior to Nancy's birth. Do the math, and you'll see he had a 10 - 15 year time period to produce children. If so, these children were not living with him on the 1820 census.

There is also a connection between the Shiflets and the Dollings line, both in VA and in OH. Jack, David R., and Keziah Shiflett migrated to OHIO sometime after March 1825, and are documented as being in OH by 1829. A Jack Shiflett is listed on the 1820 Orange census as being 16-26 years old, with a female the same age, and 2 children under 10, a boy and a girl, in his household. This is the only mention of Jack in our VA census records. From Ohio researchers, we know that Jack never married in OH.

Jack, David and Keziah are strongly linked with the Dollings family and we believe they migrated together to OH. Further investigation is needed to determine how these three Shiflets are related to Absalom or his brother-in-law, Edward Shiflett, who m. Winney's sister, Joice Herring, or his brother, James, who m. Milly Herring.

Interesting note: There is a Nathaniel b. bef. 1793 listed on the Albemarle Tithe lists as "A.S." which may stand for "Absalom's son".

2. Absolom Shiflett, b. bet. 1775-1780 (census records), VA, d. bef. 3 Jan 1860 prob. Albemarle Co., probably s/o 1. Bland and Vina Shiflett as stated in chancery suit. It would be interesting to find out if Absalom's parents are Bland & Vina or Bland & Bruck (formerly read as "Rincel"). At this point in time, it is safe to say that he is the son of Bland Shiflett who m. Vina.

Winney Herrin b. abt. 1797 (but census records say she was b. in the same time period as Absalom, 1775-80) prob. Orange Co., d. 8 Apr 1857 d/o William and M. Herring, per Winny's death record. Her mother, "M.", is possibly Molly Shiflett, d/o William Shiflett of Orange Co., VA. Absalom Shiflett reported her death.

4. Honorius (Onor) Powell b. 1829 m. 06 Jan 1851 in Greene Co., VA to Cynthia Herring, b. aft.1830. Cynthia and her possible brother Ned, were taken in by James Shiflett prior to 1851 after the death of their mother. This is the James who m. Milley Herring, see 1850 Greene Co. Census.
4. Nancy Ann C. Powell b. Jan 1831 m. 4 Feb 1851 in Greene Co., VA, Mark Stinton Shiflett b. March 1831 in Orange Co., VA s/o James and Molly Herring Shiflett. Nancy is not listed as an heir of Louden Herring/Shiflett, even though her 2 brothers are. In looking at the little we have on that line, there are problems. They m. in 1851, but only 1 child is listed b. 1866.

Bondsman was Henderson Shiflett, known son of Overton and Sallie. Will mentions daughter Parminda/Armindy, wife Lindy, and cousin Parminda Herring. Louden and Lucinda, with their 4 year old daughter, Arminta, are living next door to Absalom Shiflett on the 1850 census. Also living with them are Calvin and Elizabeth Herrin Shiflett and their son, Charles This is one of those rare cases where a family is twice listed on the census, because Louden and Lucinda Herring appear a week later. They then disappear from the census listings (we now know he died). This Lucinda is probably the Lucinda Herring, d/o Overton Shiflett, who m. Layton Shiflett 4 Aug 1875 Rockingham Co., VA
