Submitted by: Norm Addington  [email protected]

Comments: Nancy J. Shiflett was born May 1848, daughter of Adam Lincus and Cally Shiflett. The marriage licenses and/or death records of her children show four different fathers of her children: (Merry) Augustus Shiflett, Henry B. Shiflett, Conway Shiflett and Jessie Lawson (Jesse or J. L).

Augustus (Gustin) Shiflett, born January, 1838, was the son of Ahas and Ginsay Shiflett; Henry B. Shiflett, born April, 1852, Albemarle County (8 years old in 1860 census), died 1925 West Virginia, was the son of Calvin and Elizabeth Herrin (Herring) Shiflett; Conway Shiflett, born 2 June, 1840, died 9 February, 1917, was the son of Burton Shiflett and Nancy E. Frazier; Jesse Lawson, born about 1847, Rockingham County, died 26 July, 1903, Albemarle County, son of Theophilus (Anful) and Margaret Caroline Herring Lawson.

Nancy is listed as single and Head of the Household in the 1880 White Hall District, Albemarle County Census. Children listed in the 1880 census are Adam, Sallie B., Eddie, Conway and Sara B. In the 1900 Census she is listed as Head of the Household, Widowed, with 7 of 8 children living and living 5 houses from Henry's brother, Charles P. and his wife, Sarah Walton Shiflett. Children in the 1900 census are Edward, Conway, Lucy Ann, Rosa Lee and Ida Jane. In 1910 Nancy lived five houses from Charles P. and Sarah Walton Shiflett. In the 1910 Census Nancy is listed as Head of Household, Widowed, with 7 of 7 children living. Children in the 1910 census are Ida Jane and Nancy's granddaughter Maggie, daughter of Rosa Shiflett. According to a granddaughter of Nancy, she is buried at Mount Moriah United Methodist Church, White Hall, Albemarle County with no marker. Although Nancy is listed as widowed in 1910 census, no records can be found that she was ever married. Based on the information from Nancy's children's marriage licenses, death records and other sources, Nancy had the following children by the fathers listed.
