Comments: Norm Addington has sent the following inforkmation on Calvin:

Calvin Shiflett was born about 1828, died 1865, married 2 January, 1849 in Greene County, Elizabeth Herrin (Herring), born about 1828. Calvin was the son of Benson and Christina (Shiflett) Shiflett as proved by Greene County deed dated 29 Mar 1895. Soloman Shiflett (son of Absalom Shiflett and Winny Herring) signed as surety. Calvin, Elizabeth, and their first child, Charles, are listed on the 1850 Albemarle County Census living with Loudon (Head of Household, born about 1821) and Lucinda (Shiflett) Shiflett and their daughter, Araminta. These two families are living next door to Absalom Shiflett, age 60 in 1850.

Calvin served in Company F, 35th Virginia Calvery, Private during the Civil War. Calvin is listed in Charlottesville Hospital from 30 March, 1863 to 18 May, 1863 with cystitis/debilitias. According to a great-great grandson of Calvin, his mother told him the story that her grandmother, Elizabeth, (Calvin's wife) had told her: "Calvin, along with several other cousins and soldiers deserted in 1864/65 time frame due to lack of food, clothing and horses. A number of them were captured and held in the basement of a large, white house in Boonesville, Albemarle County, Virginia. Just a day or so before the end of the War, Elizabeth was bringing some food for the prisoners and as she was coming over the hill she heard gunshots from the house. Calvin and several others, including Tipton Walton, were executed. Several others were able to make a successful escape". Note: Tipton and Sallie Dowell Walton's daughter, Sarah Ann, married Calvin's son, Charles P. Shiflett in 1870.

Calvin is most likely buried in the Old Shiflett Cemetery on the Lynch River on the late Leo Shiflett farm which is a few miles from where he was shot or possibly on Frazier Mountain. After Calvin's death, Elizabeth took up with Tom Frazier. Tom and Elizabeth had two children, Louisa J. Frazier, born 1868 and William A. "Little Tommy" Frazier, born 1871. Comments from Robin: My husband's grandfather, Wilbur Shifflette, left VA around 1913 to move to Illinois with 4-5 children, his mother Lucy Jane Berry Shifflette, and his mother in law. They were extremely hard working people. They worked the land as their family before them. An aunt, Wilbur's only living child left, told me that her whole family was looked down upon. Partly because of the way they talked and for other reasons. But I never knew a more thrifty, hard working, and smart group of people.

FIFTY YEARS of married life were celebrated on Christmas Day by Mr. and Mrs. John Shiflett.  Mr. Shiflett, a retired miner, is a native of Charlottesville, VA. Mrs. Shiflett was born in Malden. They are the parents of 10 children, all of whom are living, and have 14 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren Their children are Christley of Glasgow, Mrs. Nellie Wies and John Shiflett Jr., both of Poca, Mrs. Lula Kessinger and Mrs. Macil Ward, both of Belle, Mrs. Martha Dangerfield of Ward, Mrs. Ceredo Pringle and Mrs. Lucille Britt, both of Shrewsbury, Mrs. Dolly Thompson and Mrs. Leah Dabney, both of Nitro.

    In Loving Rememberance of our dear one Chrisley Shiflett, died October 13, 1904, Aged 18 Years.

    I was lucky enough to visit Charlottesville in October of 1999 and was able to visit my last great-aunt, the remaining child of Joseph and Eliza Shifflett. She couldn't remember much, but she did remember that her Papa always took her to town with him in the wagon because she would sing to him as they drove along. According to my dad, Papa played the fiddle, but Granny (his wife) didn't sing at all. I guess my great-aunt got her musical talent from Papa's side of the family. She had a definite taste for old Hank Williams tunes, but she was able to sing a song for me that I had never heard before, and I was able to record it. These are the words to her song, and I believe it comes straight out of the Blue Ridge:

    My name is Groover Meadows
    My name I'll never deny
    I done a cruel murder
    and in prison I must die
    Now listen my good people
    listen to what I say
    I killed my wife last Saturday
    on the 11th day of May.

    It was in the Blue Ridge Mountains
    upon one fatal night,
    around my little farm house,
    the moon was shining bright
    I crept right down the stair way
    with a .38 pocket gun
    And in that fatal moment
    they all thought it was done.

    I went back up the stair way
    with the gun still in my hand,
    my wife was there to meet me
    and trembling she did stand.
    Oh Groover dear, I love you,
    she cried on bended knees.
    I love you true my darlin'
    don't shoot me, Groover, please

    Now anger still a-ragin'
    I caught her by the hair
    I beat her and I bruised her.
    I did no longer care.
    To her I would not listen
    as she pleaded on the stairs
    And here's the smokin' pistol
    I shot and killed her there.

    I went to town next mornin'
    and I told what I had done
    I surrendered to the sherriff
    and I there laid down my gun
    They put me in the jail house
    I tried to plea insane
    But the people they're against me
    Alas it was in vain

    Oh children, little children
    come and kiss your papa good-bye.
    I killed your mama on a Saturday
    and that I'll never deny.
    It was my angry nature
    sweet revenge they do crave
    and now your mother this Saturday
    lies solid in the grave.
