A note about dates:
Determining birth years for this chart is difficult, because we have two John Shiflett's living in Albemarle Co. during the same time period. One dies in 1791, this one in 1794. Unless wife Joice is mentioned in the document (usually in deeds) or a location is mentioned - this John lived by Ivy and Meadow Creeks along the road to Charlottesville - we cannot determine which record belongs to which John.

We do not have marriage records for the first marriages of his daughters which would have helped us with their ages - and therefore helped us estimate their parents' birth years.

John Shiflett b. 1735 - 1740 Orange Co., VA, d. Oct 1794 Albemarle Co., VA;

married

Joice, d. aft. 1809 probably Albemarle Co. Most researchers believe she is a Powell, the dau. of John and Ann Powell

Issue:

2. Lewis Shiflett b. bef. 1765, d. bef. 26 Jul 1824 Orange Co. (will), m. 29 Mar 1786 Albemarle Co., surety Robert Wingfield, Sarah HASLERIG d. after 1824 d/o Abel Hazelrigg (dec. by 1786) and Mary Thurmond who gives permission, witnesses: Edward and Robert Wingfield. In 1786, John sells Lewis land and names him son; witnesses: John Wingfield, Alexander Gordon and Nancy Haselrig. Note: After the death of his father, there is a great deal of conflict between Lewis vs. Joice and the other children over the disposition of John's land. When Joice releases her dower rights to the land John gave Lewis (without Joice's signature) she has the opportunity to name him "son" and does not. On the same date, Lewis agrees to sell (along with her and the rest of the heirs) 40a. of John's land to Philip Seal (this appears to be quid pro quo.) Lewis also files a caveat preventing Joice from receiving title to John's 220.5a. land grant. Lewis ends up with title to this land. Lewis also goes to court and has Joice removed as executrix of John's estate. In the above events, Lewis acted alone, without support from his siblings. Because of these transactions, I am not sure Lewis is the son of Joice, although most researchers believe he is. There is no documentation that says he is NOT her son. From his will: names wife Sally, sons Joel, John and Linsey; daughter Sally Miller Shiflett, daughter Nancy Saunders. Mentions land adjoining Ballard.

3. Nancy Shiflett b. bef. 1788 m. 11 Oct 1809 Albemarle Co., VA to Benjamin Sanders. There is an earlier 1797 Albemarle Co., VA, m. for a Benjamin Sanders to Mary Syron or Tyron.

4. Benjamin Saunders b. bef. 1824 when he is named in grandfather Lewis' will.

3. John Shiflett b. bef. 1789, VA, d. 15 Apr 1879 Albemarle Co., VA, m(1) 5 Oct 1810 Albemarle Co. Elizabeth Campbell, d. Aug 1845, d/o Silas Campbell of Culpeper Co., VA, m(2) 10 Dec 1846 in Albemarle Co., VA to Eliza Via, b. 1820 in Albemarle Co., VA, d. 25 Jul 1892 in Albemarle Co., VA. See their separate chart 3. Linsey Shiflett b. bef. 1798, prob. d. aft. 1824, served Coleman's 6th Regiment Jan. - May 1814, along with John and Lewis Shiflett (brother and father?) This is the only document I can find on Lindsey. No Lindsey is listed on the early Albemarle Co. tithe lists. NOTE: this place was originally held by Linsey Shiflett (m. Keaton) who is now listed as son of John Shiflett and Betsy Campbell. 3. Joseph (aka Joel) Shiflett b. bef. 1803 Albemarle Co., VA d. 19 Apr 1856 Greenbrier, VA m. 20 Oct 1824 in Albemarle Co., VA to Malissa Shiflett b. abt 1802 in Albemarle Co., VA, d/o Joshua Shiflett and Malida Bruce. (see Culpeper deeds on deeds pages). This family moved around a great deal. After Joseph's murder, Malissa moved to Augusta Co., VA.

4. Maria Shiflett b. 1825
4. Joseph Shiflett b. 1832 moved to Liberty Hill, Galveston Co., TX abt 1856

4. Zephanian Shiflett b. 1834

4. Anderson Shiflett b. 1838
4. John Shiflett b. 1840
4. Louise Shiflett b. 1842

5. Alfred Shiflett b. 1865 prob. Berkeley Co., WV
5. George B. Shiflett b. 1869 prob. Berkeley Co., WV

4. Melissa Shiflett b. 1848

3. Sarah (Sally) Shiflett b. bef. 1803 m. bef. 1824 to Mr. MILLER (named in father's will as Sally Miller Shiflett).  I can find no m. bef. 1824, but there is a marriage of John Miller to Sarah Shiflett 27 Aug 1853 Albemarle Co., with Ira Via as surety (Eliza Via's brother). Is this the same Sarah (with a m. after the fact) - or is this John her son by Mr. Miller?

2. Joel Shiflett b. bef. 1760 prob. Albemarle Co., VA (but 1810 census says bef. 1764), d. bef 9 Jul 1834 in Orange Co., VA, m. 1 Nov 1787 in Albemarle Co., VA to Sally Grady d/o Joshua Grady. Sally is listed as spinster, so she was probably b. bef. 1762 (25 at marriage). 19 Sep 1791 Joel witnessed the consent of Joshua Grady for the m. of his daughter Ann to Peter Reily. 1803 - Joel acquired land on Buck Island Creek, also owned a lot in Milton. Named co-executor of father John's will. 26 May 1828 Albemarle Co., Joel posts bond and affirms Maria Riley is over 21 for her m. to Oliver Bartley.

3. Winston Shiflett b. 1788 (or bef. 1791?), d. 15 Nov. 1813 in service, War of 1812; m. 6 Nov. 1813 prob. Princess Anne Co., VA Mary Hatton, d/o Thomas Hatton. See also "A Lost Marriage". Mary m(2) John Amiss, surety Joel Shiflett.
3. Anderson R. Shiflett b. 13 Sep 1790 in Albemarle Co., VA, d. 12 Dec 1838 in Albemarle Co., VA, m. 5 Nov 1811 in Albemarle Co., VA to Catherine Mayo Railey b. 7 May 1798, d. 27 Jan 1850, d/o Martin and Elizabeth (Mayo) Railey. According to the WPA Historical Inventory Project held at LVA, Anderson purchased his home place (known as the Bullock place in the 1930's)in 1828 from William Suttle. After Anderson's death, Catherine (or her estate?) held the land until 1860 when it was sold to James T. Marshall. The land is located southeast of Charlottesville, off of Rte. 624.

4. Frances Elizabeth Shiflett b. 10 Dec 1812 in Albemarle Co., VA, d. 17 Jan 1825 in Albemarle Co., VA
4. Mary Jane Shiflett b. 21 Nov 1814 in Albemarle Co., VA, m. 18 Dec 1837 in Albemarle Co., VA, surety Anderson R. Shiflett, Benjamin Sneed b. 1795 (according to Snead researchers) d. aft. 1853. Mary Jane was cut out of her mother's will because she was "so wealthy."

Graves b. 13 Sep 1824 in VA, d. 18 Nov 1908 in Williamson Co., TX, believed to be d/o Joseph Croshaw Graves and Sarah Henry Walker (see Graves Notes below.) In 1870 this family is listed on the 1870 Williamson Co., TX census, p. 106, family 712. NOTE: There is a 16 Jan 1845 Fluvanna Co., VA m. for a Joel W. 2. Elizabeth (Betsy) Shiflett b. bef. 1766 d. Apr-May 1813 Albemarle Co., VA; m. 8 Dec 1787 in Albemarle Co., VA to George Boothe, d. Apr - May 1797 Albemarle Co., VA, John Shiflet surety, listed as spinster, pushing her est. birth year back. In 1788, John and Joice sell George Booth land. 14 Jul 1797, brother-in-law, Bland Ballard, was appointed appraiser of George Booth's estate (Albemarle W. B. 3, p. 327 - as listed in the Valentine papers.) George names the following children in his will: William, George, Courtney. Elizabeth names: Lewis, Courtney, Joel, Thomas, Williamson (underage in 1813); William (of age in 1813) and George (underage in 1813). After George's death, Elizabeth appears to have had a relationship with Thomas Burton, who was living in her home at the time of her death; she also mentions he had deeded her land. [Note: a Thomas Burton m. 15 Jun 1813 in Albemarle Co., VA to Barbara Ballard, John Cammel (Campbell) wit. Is this the same Thomas Burton? Is this the same John Campbell m. to Martha Ballard (see above)?

3. William Boothe b. 1787-91 (1788), listed as underage in father's will of 1797, of age in mother's 1813 will, m. 21 Feb 1814 in Charlottesville, Albemarle Co., VA to Dolly Wingfield, d/o Charles Wingfield and Elizabeth Day.

4. William Boothe
4. John Boothe
4. Elizabeth Boothe
4. Charlotte Boothe
4. Susan Boothe
4. Mary Ann Boothe
4. George W. Boothe
4. Sarah Boothe

3. George Boothe b. 1787 - 1793 (1790), listed as underage in father's will of 1797 and also mother's will of 1813.
3. Courtney Boothe b. 1787 -1793 (1792), listed as underage in father's will of 1797 and in mother's will of 1813.
Possible issue with Thomas Burton:
3. Lewis Booth b. aft. 1797, and bef. 1813.
3. Joel Booth b. aft. 1797, and bef. 1813.
3. Thomas Booth b. aft. 1797, and bef. 1813.
3. Williamson Booth b. aft. 1797, and bef. 1813. [Note: from reading Elizabeth's will, it appears that Williamson and William are two different men; will clearly states William is of age, while Williamson is listed with those not of age. Also, William and George are listed together in one bequest, while 4 other children are listed together in another bequest.]

2. Mary Shiflett m(1) Mr. Riddle m(2) 15 Mar 1791 in Albemarle Co., VA to George Cox; Lewis Shiflett surety. George Cox must have died bef. 1794, because he is not a signatory on the deed of the heirs of John Shiflett to Lewis Shiflett. Mary Cox is listed by herself on later deeds and court transactions with her mother, Joice Shiflett. Mary may have m. 3) 4 Mar 1815 Albemarle Co., William Harris, surety Lewis Shiflett.

3. Elizabeth Riddle
3. Emily Riddle

2. Martha (Patsy) Shiflett b. bef. 1760 m(1) Mr. Gray - this may be George Gray listed in the 9 Oct 1783 Albemarle Co., VA Road Order with land near her father; m(2) as Patsy Gray (widow), 14 Jul 1792 in Albemarle Co., VA to Martin Mooney, John Shiflett surety. In 1793, John and Joice sell land to Martin Mooney. Note: In 1809, a James Gray, along with Garland Ballard (brother of the bride) are surety on the m. of Martha (Patsy) Ballard (niece of this Martha) and John Campbell (see above.) In 1822, Martin Mooney is surety on the m. of Sally Gray (b. bef. 1801) to John Newcum. Although possible, it is unlikely Sally is the daughter of Martha, because her m. date of 1822 falls 7 years after the first known m. of Martha's children with Martin Mooney, her 2nd husband. Sally is not listed as a spinster. It is possible Sally Gray is Martha's niece or even granddaughter. James Gray (b. bef. 1781) is the most likely candidate to be Martha's son, but he may be a nephew.

Possible children with Mr. Gray:
3. James Gray b. bef. 1781
4. Sally Gray b. bef. 1801 m. 1822 in Albemarle Co., VA to John Newcum, Martin Mooney surety.
3. Martha Gray b. bef. 1786 m. 7 Mar 1807 to Phillip Phillips, Martin Mooney surety who also affirms Martha is over 21. Note: Phillip Phillips is surety on the m. of Garland Ballard, Martha's cousin (see above) to Susannah Phillips (poss. his sister?)
Possible chldren with Martin Mooney:
3. Susannah Mooney b. aft. 1794 m. 25 Oct 1815 in Albemarle Co., VA to Edward Lain; surety Martin Mooney who also gives consent.
3. Maria Mooney b. aft. 1798 m. 2 Dec 1819 in Albemarle Co., VA to Charles Cox; surety Martin Mooney, father, who also give his consent.

It was once thought the name was Saxon, but the one author suggests that it was Norman. (The name of the author of this material is not given.)
The name first appears in England in 1066 as De Hesilrige, which was altered to Hazlerigg by Royal License in 1818 by Sir Arthur Grey Hazlerigg, the 11th baronet. The Hazlerigg or Hesilrige genealogy is on record at Leicester, and may be examined by anyone who wants to. It dates from 1066, when one Roger De Hesilrige came with William the Conqueror. The name is supposed to have been taken from the area in Normandy whence he came.

One William de Hassebrig is named in the Pipe Roll of 1187. The ancient family of Hesilrige came into Leicestershire in the 14th century from Northumberland. The name probably derived from the village of Hesilrige, near Berwick-upon-Tweed in Northumberland, where, upon an old tower standing in 1714, were the arms of the family. The Baronetage commences the pedigree with (1) Simon, (2) Simon, (3) Sir Donald, (4) Thomas.
The current family home is Noseley Hall, Billesdon, Leicestershire, which dates from 1730 " but the Hazlerigg family have been on that spot since 1419. The family chapel is even older and was built in 1270." The motto on the coat of arms is "Pro Aris et Focis" for which the translation given is "For Hearth and Home."

Since I have not checked these data, I cannot vouch for them. You may note one uncertainty--whether the name was derived from an area in Normandy or from a village in Northumberland! When this was written (in the 1990s?) it stated that the "Current Noseley Hall residents are The Hon. Arthur Hazlerigg & Mrs. Hazlerigg, Nosely Hall, Billesdon, Leicestershire LE7 9EH, England." It also noted that the name is now spelled Hazlerigg in England and Hazelrigg in America.

The book only states that "Andelusia Gentry, born May 15, 1835, married a Shiplet." Andelusia was eighth child of Robert Gentry (b. 1788 Albemarle) who married Mary Wingfield, daughter of Francis Wingfield, in 1821. Mary was born in 1800 and died in 1874. Robert Gentry's plantation was situated on the Rivanna River. He died in 1879. Robert Gentry was the son of Benajah, the son of Nicholas II.
