Comments: David had a sister Keziah and a brother Jack . We found Keziah married a James Dollings in 1829 (Vol. 2 marriage book Muskingum Co., Ohio). 1839 Keziah Dollings married a James Wilcox, ( Vol. 3 marriage book Muskingum Co.). Jack did not marry. Two of the Dolling girls are daughters of William Dollings also of VA. William Dollings relocated to Ohio and was next door neighbors to Rowland. Rowland Shiflett and William Dollings witnessed a deed together along with other Shiflett men in Orange County in 1825. So Rowland, Keziah and Jack left VA sometime after Mar 1825 and arrived there before 1829 when Keziah marries. Rowland signed his name on the deed as Shiflett; he changed his name after relocating to Ohio. Also, on the 1820 Orange Co. Census, there is a Jack Shiflett listed. This is the only time Jack appears in VA. See also: Gallery Page of David Rowland Shiflet Family.

"Amy Shiplett wrote her daughter Axie years later: One thing we've got to be proud of is none of the relatives ever went to the pen - not even to jail - on either side of the family. Your grandparents were poor. They were well thought of, and well respected. When Grandpa (Caleb) Hughes died he hadn't an enemy - always tended to his own business. Grandfather (Roland) Shiplett never harmed anybody."

Rowland and Elizabeth

Rowland Shiplet and wife Elizabeth Franklin 1875
Original in the possession of Ralph Wescott1
1 History of the photo from Cyndi Simpkins: I heard from Ralph [Wescott] and he wrote in a letter to me that the pictures he has were given to his mother from Leroy a son of Roland's and his mother was told that Roland had the pics taken in 1875 and all the pics that I have that look like they were taken on the same day were in fact [were] taken all on the same day . Roland it was said wanted them taken and interesting it is said that Simeon did not come home for it as he was still upset with James. . . for a while he lived as a Shiflet and Shipley down in Pickaway county only later to become a Shiplett.
