Lycinnius Sheplett

Comments: My family always said, “We're not related to the Shiffletts, never have been. They are a horse of a different color.” But through your work and others, there are now some of us that realize that we are Shiffletts--we just won't tell the elders! Here's what I know about my Shifflett/Sheplett ties. Lycinnius was my great-great grandfather. Both Lycinnius and his wife, Ginny, are buried at Prize Hill Cemetery, Boonesville, VA in unmarked graves.

The Church of the Good Shepherd, which is located across the road and creek (to the north) of Prize Hill is located on the George Sheplett farm. Before that, it was the property of his father Lycinnius. When my grandmother Gertrude Sheplett Musto was growing up, the property to the direct west of the cemetery belonged to her uncle Charlie Bruce and she knew the area by his house as “Bruce Hollow”. From looking at the maps, it looks like Uncle Charlie's property was once part of the Shiflett land that connected to the mill (?). Charlie Bruce (c1868-?) md Mary Ida Susan Sheplett (1871-?) on ll Nov 1891 in Albemarle Co. Mary Ida was a dau of Lycinnius and Jinny Bruce Sheplett--so there is a family connection. Charlie was the son of James H and Frances A Bruce. Charlie's sister Lucy B (17 Aug 1876-2 June 1959) md Noah W Shiflett (1 May 1876-9Feb 1957) on 14 July 1894. Most all of these Bruces/Shifflets are bur at Prize Hill Cemetery. My grandmother also said that the log cabin in which she was born was located on the property where Prize Hill cemetery is located. But she got a little confused in her older age, so I'm not sure; My Aunt thinks the cabin was located on George Sheplett's present property and that Grandpa Sinny (Licinnius) and Grandma Jinny lived in it when she was little. So it is the presently used church that is on known George Sheplett family property and my family has told me that it will revert to the family if the church was to close. There is a possibility that the property once extended across the creek and roadway to include Prize Hill.

Fartherest left, closest to the dog, Jared believes that is Edna Bruce, next to her slightly in front is supposedly Shortie Sheplett Morris. The woman on the end (right) might be Janie Bruce. The man in the hat is Charles Middleton Bruce. The other 3 men we can't identify.
