John Shiflet of Hawkins Co., TN

Comments: John m. Frances Martin in Albemarle Co. in 1813, and it is believed they left soon after for Tennessee. It is proven by Albemarle Co. unrecorded deed of 2 Sep 1830, that John Shiflet of Hawkins Co., TN is the John who m. Frances Martin, d/o Jacob. He is listed on the 1830 Hawkins Co., TN census as age 40-50 (1780-1790), and in 1840 as age 60-70 (1770-1780). It is thought by some that John first m. Ann Hicks in 1798 in Albemarle Co. Either way, the 1820 Albemarle or Orange census should list a younger John Shiflett, with several young children, but if so, I can't find him. So where was he in 1820? And if he is the John who m. Ann Hicks in 1798, where is he in 1800 and 1810?

In support of an earlier marriage (with issue) there is the marriage of Austin Shiflet to Elizabeth Francisco in 1823 in Hawkins Co. Many believe that Austin was the son of John. For that to be possible, John would have to have m. by 1801, and that supports the 1770-80 birth date, and a previous marriage. The alternative is that John and Austin are brothers or cousins. To date, there is no documentation to support the following as children of this John Shiflett. There is a reference in Meigs Co. Will Book 1859-1881 p. 44-5, and p. 167 to the inventory, sale and settlement of the estate of John Shiflett dec'd by John A. Shifflett, and later by A.C. Shiflett Adm; with a receipt from Austin Shifflet. A receipt was turned in when an heir had received their part of the estate. If this is the John who m. Frances Martin, then a copy of the estate settlement might verify Austin as his son, and perhaps uncover the names of other children, if any.

From looking at the early TN census records, it appears this family either traveled to TN, or met up with, the following VA families: ALEXANDER, BURRIS, DAVIS, FRANCISCO, GRADY, HALL, HENSLEY, HERRON, HICKS, LANE, SANDRIDGE, TAYLOR, THACKER, and VAUGHN
