Richard Bruce and Joshua Shiflett Deed of Trust with Micajah Shiflett

Know all men by these presents that we Richard Bruce and Joshua Shiflett are held and firmly bound unto Micajah Shiflett in the full and --- sum of one thousand dollars to be paid unto the said Micajah his heirs etc. which payment well and truly to be made we bind ourselves our heirs etc. sealed with our seal and dated this 23rd day of February 1823. the condition of the above obligation is such that the said Micajah Shiflett is security for the said Bruce and Joshua Shiflett in several cases now if the said Bruce and Joshua Shiflett shall forever endemnify the said Micajah Shiflett for all security that he is bound for them so that sustains no damage by the same then this obligation to be void otherwise the said Micajah Shiflett is hereby authorised to sell the following property, belonging to the said Bruce for cash after giving ten days notice of the time & place of such sale (to wit) one negro woman named Dyce and child one mare bought of Miller a yoke of oxen and Cash and we do hereby warrant and defend the title of the aforesaid property to him the said Micajah Shiflett him and his heirs forever free from the claim or claims of any person whatsoever As witness our hands and seals the day and year above written.

This Indenture made and entered into this twenty fourth day of May in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and twenty three, between John Morriss of the county of Orange and State of Virginia of the one part and Stephen Shiflett of the aforesaid county and state of the other part. Witnesseth that the said John Morris for and in consideration of the sum of two hundred and fifteen dollars to him in hand paid the receipt whereof he the said Morriss doth hereby acknowledge himself fully satisfied and paid hath granted bargained and sold unto the said Stephen Shiflett one certain parcel of tract of land lying and being in the county of Orange containing seventy five acres be the same more or less lying on the waters of Linches river and bounded as followeth. To wit, Beginning in John Huckstep's line North nine degrees West 210 poles to a chestnut on a north hill side thence south 40 degrees East 116 poles to a chestnut and chestnut oak and on a west hill side near a branch thence south 12 degrees East 54 poles to a large chestnut oak on a north hill side thence south 50 degrees West 90 poles to the Beginning, to have and to hold the said tract or parcel of land clear of all incumbrances whatsoever and the said John Morriss obliges himself his heirs and assigns to warrant and defend the title of the said land to the said Stephen Shiflett his heirs and assigns forever clear of all claims whatsoever. This Indenture made this twentyeth day of January in year one thousand eight hundred and twenty four Between James D. Langford of the County of Albemarle of the One part and Jacob Martin of the same County of the other part. Witnesseth that the said James K Langford for and in consideration of the sum of two hundred and twenty five dollars current money of Virginia to him in hand paid by the said Jacob Martin the reciept whereby acknowledged hat granted bargained and sold and by these presents do grant bargain and sell unto the said Jacob Martin and to his heirs and assigns forever one certain tract of land lying and being in the said County of Albemarle on Kids Creek containing by estimation one hundred and twenty four acres be the same more or less and bounded as follows. Begining on the East side of Kids Creek in the Old line and running with the same with 12 degrees East to Chesnut Oak thence South 87 East 20 poles to a Locust thence North 3 degrees East 32 poles to a chesnut read Oak thence 26 degrees West 46 poles to a red Oak thence along several lines of marked trees to two Chesnut Oaks on the West side of Kid's Creek corner of Benjamin Huntsman thence down the meanders of the Creek to the Beginning. To have and to hold the Track or parcel of Land aforesaid together with all and singular the appurtenances thereunto belonging or in any wise appertaining, unto the said Benjamin Martin his heirs and assigns forever and the said James H Langford for himself and his heirs do by these presents Covenant and agree to and with the said Jacob Martin and his heirs that he will forever warrant and defend the right and title of the aforesaid land unto the said Jacob Martin his heirs etc. against the Claim of all other persons whatever. This Indenture made this twenty second of March in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and twenty four between Willis White and Anderson White executor of James White decd of Orange county and State of Virginia Suckey White their mother of the one part and Overton Shiflett of the sd county and State aforesaid of the other part Witnesseth that the sd. Willis White and Anderson White Suckey white for and in consideration of the sum of one hundred dollars to them in hand paid by the sd. Overton Shiflett at and before the ensealing and delivery of these presents the receipt whereof us doth acknowledged thereof doth ----- and discharge the sd. Overton Shiflett his heirs, executors, administrators and for divers good causes and consideration the -------- -------- -- --- aliened, released, enfeoffed and confirmed and by these prents doth grant alien release enfeoff and confirm unto the sd Overton Shiflett his heirs and assigns one tract or parcel of land lying and being in the county containing thirty seven acres by estimation be the same more or less and bounded as followeth to wit, Beginning at a double chestnut oak in Whites line on the north side the mountain running S31E57 poles angle 56 1/2 E 1 4/16 poles to a chestnut and a spanish oak on the north side of sd. mountain thence N44E122 poles to a double chestnut on the west side of the south prong of chesleys river or brison branch thence N65W74 poles angle S45W3 1/20 poles to a chestnut oak on the top of a ridge in said Whites line thence with his line S45W to the first station. NOTE: this is the land bought by Lewis Shiflett by Orange Co. deed of 21 May 1819 from John and Rhoda Shiflett who had bought it from Eli Austin by Orange Co. deed of 8 Jan 1816 and which Austin had inherited from his father.
This Indenture made this 17th day of November in the year of our Lord 1824 between Mordecai Brown and Sarah M. Brown his wife and Sally Shiflett of county of Orange of the one part and Joseph Shiflett of the county aforesaid of the other part Witnesseth that the said Mordecai Brown and Sarah M. his wife and Sally Shiflett in consideration of three hundred and fifty dollars of lawful money of this commonwealth, to them in hand paid by the said Joseph Shiflett at or before the ensealing and delivery of these presents the receipt whereof is hereby acknowledged, have bargained and sold and by these presents do each of them do bargain and sell unto the said Joseph Shiflett his heirs and assigns a certain trace of land, containing one hundred acres be the same more or less being a part of the following tract bounded as followeth viz. Beginning at pointers on Lynches river thence up the river 226 poles to pointers thence down a branch ninety six poles to a sycamore thence south 11 1/2 degrees west 40 poles to a chestnut oak corner thence north 84 degrees west 208 poles to a white oak and dogwood, thence up the branch 193 poles to pointers on a branch thence north 118 degrees east 10 poles to pointers at the beginning the whole tract contains one hundred and ninety six acres which the above courses includes together with all appurtenances thence unto belonging to the part sold, the said Shiflett owning the part not conveyed. To have and to hold the said part of the 196 acres which is 100 acres to him the said Joseph Shiflett his heirs and assigns forever and the said Mordecai Brown and Sarah M. Brown his wife and Sally Shiflett for themselves and their heirs, the said land and all the appurtenances to their part belonging forever defend by these presents. This Indenture made this twenty fourth of January in the year of our Lord, eighteen hundred and twenty five between Joel Shiflett of the count of Orange of the of part and Mordecai Brown of the county of Albemarle of the other part, Witnesseth the said Joel Shiflett have bargained and sold in fee simple offended least over and forever confirmed unto the said Brown him and his heirs forever of the consideration of eight hundred dollars to him in hand paid by the said Brown the said Shiflett doth hereby ----- one certain tract or parcel of land lying and being in the said county of Orange on the waters of Lynches river containing one hundred and ninety six acres bounded as follows to which beginning at pointers on lynches river thence up the river two hundred and twenty six poles to pointers thence down a branch ninety six poles to a sycamore, thence south eleven and a half degrees west forty poles to a chesnut oak corner thence north eight four degrees west two hundred and eighty poles to a white oak and dogwood, thence up the branch one hundred and ninety three poles to pointers on a branch, thence north eighteen degrees east ten poles to pointers at the beginning and the said Shiflett and Malissa his wife doth hereby warrant and defend the right and title of the aforesaid tract of land to him the said Brown to him and his heirs forever with all the appurtenances thereunto belong or in any wise appertaining unto the same clear of all encumbrance free from claim or claims of any person or persons whatever. A Deed of quit claims To all persons to whom these presents shall come greeting Know ye that I Nutty Hearron of Rockingham county and state of Virginia for the consideration of five dollars received to my full satisfaction of Abslom Shiflett of the county of Orange and aforesaid state have re---sed released and quit claimed unto the said Abslom Shiflett all right and title which I the said Nutty Hearon in and to all the property left by my father William Hearon at his dest [should prob. be death] both real and personal of ---record whatsoever in Orange county and elsewhere and also my part of his claim as a soldier to have all my right and title in and to the said remised, released and quit claimed property with the appurtenances thereof to him the said Abslom Shiflett his heirs and assigns forever to his and their own proper use and behoof and furthermore I the said Nutty Hearon do for myself my heirs my executors and administrators covenant with the said Abslom Shiflett his heirs and assigns that upon and after the ensealing and delivery of these presents I the said Nutty Hearon will have and claim no right in or to the above property remised released and quit claimed premises. A Deed of quit claims To all persons to whom these presents shall come greeting know ye that I Netty Herrin of the county of Orange and state of Virginia for the consideraton of ten dollars received to my full satisfaction of Absalom Shiflet of the county of Orange and state of aforesaid have remised, released and quit claimed unto the said Absalom Shiflt all right and title which I the said Netty Herrin in and do a certain peace or parcel of land known by the name of James Herron tract and being the same bounded by Edward and William Erly and others contain by estimation one hundred and thirty four acres I being a dixtes? to one thirteenth part be the same more or less to have all my right and title in and to the said, revised, released and quit claimed premises with the appurtenances thereof to him the said Absalom Shiflett his heirs and assigns forever to his and their proper use and behoof and furthermore I the said Netty Herron do for myself my heirs my executors and administrators covenant with the said Absalom Shiflett his heirs and assigns that from and after the ensealing and delivering of these presents I the said Netty Herron will have and claim no rights in or to the above remised released and quit claimed premises. This Indenture made and entered into this 26th day of March 1825 between Joel Shiflett and Melissa his wife of the one part of the county of Orange and Joshua Shiflett of Albemarle county of the other part witnesseth that the said Joel Shiflett and wife for in consideration of the sum of six hundred dollars to them in hand paid by the said Joshua Shiflett the receipt whereof is hereby acknowledged have bargained and sold let over and forever confirmed unto the said Joshua Shiflett him and his heirs forever one certain tract or parcel of land lying and being in the county of Orange on the waters of Lynches river containing by estimation one hundred and ninety five acres more or less being the land whereon the said Joel Shiflett adjoining the land of James Gentry and others and I do hereby warrant and defend the right and title of the aforsaid land with all the appertenances belonging to him the said Joshua Shflett him and his heirs forever clear of all incumbrance. To have and to hold the same from me the said Joel Shiflett and all other persons claiming under me and for their own proper uses and behoofs forever. Witnesseth that the said Joel Shiflett and Malissa his wife for and in consideration of the sum of three hundred and fifty Dollars to them in hand paid before the ensealing and delivery of these presents the receipt where of is hereby acknowledged have bargained and sold and by these presents do bargain sell and covey (sic) to the said Redd a parcel or tract of Land lying in the County of Culpeper on the north side of Mount Poney being that part of the tract of Land on which William Curtis deceased lately resided designated in the division thereof as lott No. 2 and bounded as follows Beginning at a stake in the line between the said Redd and the estate of William Curtis deceased thence S 2 1/2 W 15 poles to two red oaks stumps on the north side of road leading to Fredericksburg corner to the said Redd thence down the said road N81E29 poles to a Stone corner to said Redd in said road thence with said Redds line S11E210 poles to a hickery and box oak on the south side of the top of Mount Poney corner to the said Redd and the estate of Edward C. Brown thence with said Browns line N72W74 poles to a small old field in a bottom on the north side of a spot where a house formerly stood a cedar called for but not found thence N11W121 poles to a White oak on a drain in the field corner to Inskip thence S78 1/2 W32 poles to a gully corner to said Inskip thence N11W25 poles to main road thence up the said road S53 1/2 W26 poles to the mouth of the lane leading from Mount Poney meeting House thence with the said road along said lane N7W30 poles to a stake at the corner of lot No 1 in the division of the aforesaid Estate of William Curtis dec'd. thence N63 1/2 E 97 1/2 poles to the beginning containing one hundred and one acres be the same more or less and the privileges and advantages of the said tract or parcel of land houses and improvements thereon belonging or in any wise appurtaining and the reversion and reversions remainder and remainders rents issues and profits there of To have and to held all and singular the said tract or parcels of Land Houses etc. before described to the said Joseph B. Redd his heirs and assigns to the only proper use and behoof of the said Redd his heirs and assigns forever and the said Joel Shiflett and Malissa his wife for themselves their heirs (omitted) they will warrant and forever defend the said tract or parcel of Land (omitted) to the said Redd (omitted). Witnesseth that the said Joshua Shiflett and Malinda his wife, for and in consideration of the sum of one dollar to them in hand paid, the receipt whereof they do hereby acknowledge have given, granted, bargained and sold and by these presents do give, grant, bargain and sell, unto the said Isaac Shiflett his heirs, Excs. adms. or assigns forever one certain tract or parcel of land , lying and being in the County of Albemarle and containing by estimation, ninety six acres, be the same more or less and lying on the waters of Buckmountain Creek adjoining the lands of Jasper Hest, Richd. To all persons to whom these presents shall come greeting know ye that I William Ham of the county of Orange and state of Virginia for the consideration of fifteen dollars received to my full satisfaction of Absalum Shiflett of the county of Orange and state of aforesaid have remiss, released and quit claimed unto the said Absalum Shiflett all rights and titles which I the said William Ham is and to a certain piece or parcel of land known by the name of James Herron tract and being the same bounded by Edward Knull, William Early and others containing estimation one thirteenth part out of one hundred and thirty four acres of land and being a in diseter to thirteenth part of by the same more or less To have all my rights and titles in and to the said remissed released and quit claimed premises with the appertenances therof to him the said Absalum Shiflett his heirs and assigns forever to his and, theirs ---- proper use and behoof and further more I the said William Ham do for myself my heirs, excutors and administrators covenant with the said Absalum Shiflett and his heirs and assigns that from and after the ensealing and delivery of these presents I the said William Ham will have no claim nor rights in or to the above remissed released and quit claimed premises. This Indenture considered and entered into by and between Henry Snow of the county of Orange and state of Virginia of the one part and James Wood of the county and state aforesaid of the other part in the year eighteen hundred and twenty nine. Witnesseth that the said Henry Snow and Mary his wife hath bargained and sold to the said James Wood a certain tract of land lying and being in the upper end of Orange at the foot of the Blue ridge on Roache's river and for the consideration of the sum of two hundred dollars in hand paid to said Snow by said Wood the said Henry Snow and Mary is wife doth firmly by these presents bargain and sell to the said James Wood the said tract of land and the receipt whereof acknowledged and bounded as followeth to wit, Beginning on two sycamores on the bank of Roaches river at the mouth of a branch, thence up the meanders of said branch north to chestnut, chestnut oak and gum corner to John Shiflett, thence west with the said Shiflett's line to chestnut and red oak at a bunch of rocks, thence southwest down to the river to corner on chestnut and spanish oak thence down the meanders of said river to the beginning and the said Henry Snow and Mary his wife make the ashore right and title to said tract of land containing one hundred acres more or less unto said Wood and by these presents the said Henry Snow and Mary his wife warrants and defends a clear independent right and title to the said James Wood and his heirs forever, to said land clear of all claims of any person or persons whatsoever thereto claiming. To all persons to whom these presents shall come Greeting, Know ye, that I Micajah Shiplet of the county of Albemarle and state of Virginia for the consideration of fifty dollars received to my full satisfaction of Trice Shiplet my son of the said county have bargained, sold released and quit claimed unto the said Trice Shiplet all my right and title to ten acres of land lying and being in the said county and bounded as followeth to wit Beginning at a Locustree in said Micajah Shiplet line, thence with said Shiplets to two small hickorys, thence a straight line to two small pesimmons and a pin tree, a strait line to the beginning To have and to hold all the right and title that I have to the tenacies be the same more or less bargained sold released and quit claimed premises with the appertenances there of to him the said Trice Shiplet his heirs and assigns forever to his and their own proper use and behoof. Langford of the County of Augusta and State of Virginia of the other part, witnesseth that the said John Shiflett for and in consideration of the sum of twentyfive dollars current money of Virginia to him in hand paid by the said James H. Langford the receipt whereof is hereby acknowledged hath granted bargained and sold and by these presents doth grant bargain and sell unto the said James H. Langford and his heirs and assigns, his individual one eight part of a tract of land containing one hundred and twentyfive acres being the same more or less, being the same that was willed to him and his wife Frances Shiflett by her father Jacob Martin, decd, which will appear by said will now on record in the ClerkÕs Office of the County Court of Albemarle situate laying and being in Albemarle adjoining the lands of Charles Langford, Fontain Richards and others, Together with all and singular the appurtenances wherewith belonging or in anywise appertaining To have and to hold the said eight part thereof with its appurtenances unto the said James H. Witnesseth that the said James H. Langford and June his wife for and in consideration of the sum of three hundred dollars lawful money of Virginia to them in hand paid by the said John Shiflett the receipt whereof is hereby acknowledged hath granted bargained and sold, and by these presents do grant bargain and sell to the said John Shiflett and his heirs and assigns a certain tract or parcel of Land lying in the said county of Albemarle on Kidd's Creek containing by estimation one hundred and twenty four acres be the same more or less and bounded as follows towit - Begining in the East side of Kid's Creek in the old line and running with the same North 12 degrees East to a chesnut oak thence S87 East 20 poles to a locust thence N3 E37 poles to a chesnut and red oak thence S26W46 poles to a red oak, thence along several lines of marked trees to two chesnut oaks on the west side of Kid's Creek Corner to Benjamin Huntsman thence down the meanders of the creek to the Begining, together will all and singular the appurtenances thereunto belonging or any wise appurtaining. To Have and to Hold the said tract or parcel of Land with its appurtenances unto the said John Shiflett his heirs and assigns forever to the only proper use and behoof of him the said John Shiflett his heirs & assigns forever and the said James H Langford and Jane his wife for themselves and their heirs executors and administrators do covenant with said John Shiflett his heirs executors and administrators the said tract of Land with its appurtinances unto the said John Shiflett his heirs and assigns against the claim or claims of the said James H Sangfroid and Jane his wife their heirs, and of all and every person or persons whatsoever Shall and will warrant and forever defend by these presents.
