Comments: Stephen Shiflet was born about 1775 in Albemarle County, Va. (He was under 21 at the time of his marriage, but Rachel was over 21.) The names of his parents are unknown, however, the following Albemarle County Marriage Bond for his marriage to Rachael Hicks, implies a close relationship to an older Stephen Shiflet.

"Know all men by these presents that we Stephen Shiflett, minor, jr., and Stephen Shiflett, junr. are held and firmly bound unto Robert Brook, Govenor or Chief Magistrate of the Commonwealth of Virginia and his successors in the Just and full sum of one hundred and sixtysix Dollars and sixtysix cents to be paid to the said Brook and his successors, to which payment well and truly to be made, we bind ourselves and each of our joint & several heirs executors and administrators firmly by these presents sealed with our seals and dated the 16th day of January 1795.
The Condition of the above obligation is such that whereas a marriage is suddenly intended to be had and solemnized between the above bound Stephen Shiflett (minor) & Rachel Hicks, now if there should be no lawful cause or impediment to obstruct the said marriage then the above obligation to be void else to remain in full force and virtue. Stephen Shifflet apparently moved to Hawkins County, Tennessee, around 1810 along with John Shifflet who married Ann Hicks in 1789. Census records are not available for Tennessee from 1800 to 1820, however, the 1830 Hawkins County, Tennessee Census lists four Shifflet households as follows:

Stephen Shiflet is listed as buying items at a store in New Canton, Hawkins Co., Tennessee.

Austin & Anderson were sons of John Shiflett. In the 1840 Hawkins Co., TN census, John and Stephen are still listed as heads of household, with the addition of Darrett Shiflet listed as head of household. Austin and Anderson had moved to Meigs and Bradley Counties by 1840. The parents of John and Stephen are unknown from any records yet discovered. The name of this family appears as Shiflett, Shifflet, Shiflet, Shiplet and Shiplett.
