Notes on Joseph Christian Shiflet:

The 1840 Federal Census, Elbert Co, GA, page 165 shows the following: 1 male 30-40. There are no other members of his household. He had a deed in Elbert Co, GA purchased from William White, dated February 13, 1839, paying $500.00. This property is adjacent to John Shiflet.

Joseph Shiflet can be found in the 1850 Cherokee County, Georgia Federal Census on page 489-B, family # 1218-1225. He is shown to be age 47, born in Georgia, farmer, with Frances, age 24; Lucinda, daughter, age 4; Isaac E., son, age 2.

Joseph is shown on the 1860 Federal Census, Cherokee County, page 711-B and having the following family: Frances, wife, age 33; Lucinda, daughter, age 14; Isaac E, son, age 10*; Sarah S. S.*, daughter, age 10; Mary E. daughter, age 6; Joseph, son, age 2.

*Isaac should be age 12, as he was age 2 in the 1850 Federal Census. Sarah was not shown on the 1850 census.

The story goes that Joseph, his wife, Frances, and the three girls were killed towards the end of the Civil War during Sherman's march through Georgia. Isaac and Joseph Christian survived by hiding for several days while the Yankees were still in the area. Someone, perhaps a relative, a neighbor, or even a stranger, took them in. After everything had settled down a bit, an attempt was made to find someone in their immediate family, but the results of the search are unknown. It is unclear who raised the two boys and where they were raised. There is a blank area here.

Joseph Christian and Isaac Shiflet eventually ended up around Independence County, Arkansas. When they went there, who they went there with (if anyone) or even why they went there is unclear. They are shown on the 1870 Federal Census, Independence Co, AR, page 68 - living in the home of Edeon and Sina Mathews. Isaac was listed as being 20 and Joseph Christian as 14 years old and both were working on the farm. Each boy's age is older than is expected for 1870 - perhaps they needed to add extra years to their age in order to find some type of employment. They were young and apparently living on their own. Their surname was spelled Shifflett.

Joseph Christian Shiflet married Annie Paralee Marshall, probably in Independence County, AR. Joseph Christian must have known nothing or very little about his parents because census information never was able to give his parents name or place of birth. As far as anyone in the family remembers, he never spoke of his parents or indicated he knew anything about them. His children also had no idea who their father's parents were.

Joseph Christian spent his last few years living in Jefferson County. He died in a nursing home. As indicative of his whole life, his death certificate indicates that his son, Clarence Shiflet, still had no idea the names of his father's parents.
