Democratic candidate for Grimes County judge dies
By DAVID SULLENS, Eagle Staff Writer
NAVASOTA — Paul Shiflett, the Democratic candidate for Grimes County judge, died
Tuesday after a brief illness. Shiflett, a 61-year-old pipeline construction
worker making his first bid for public office, defeated incumbent Ira E. “Bud”
Haynie by one vote in the spring Democratic primary. Shiflett’s name will remain
on the ballot for the Nov. 5 election, in which he was to oppose Republican
James Dixon. Should Shiflett receive the largest number of votes in the
election, state law dictates the position would become vacant on Jan. 1, the day
he would have taken office. A replacement would then be appointed by the newly
elected Grimes County Commissioners Court, according to Paul Miles, staff
attorney with the elections division of the Texas Secretary of State’s office.
Born in Crockett, Shiflett lived in Navasota 35 years. He and his wife, Betty,
had seven children. Betty Shiflett said Tuesday her husband’s death was
unexpected, even though he had been diagnosed with cancer on Sept. 13. Grimes
County Democratic Chairman A.G. Allen called Shiflett “a hell of a good fellow.”
“You won’t find anybody who’s his enemy,” Allen added. Dixon, the Republican
nominee, expressed his condolences to Shiflett’s family. “When something like
this happens, it’s time to realize what the important things are in life and how
close our county is as a family and keep these things in mind in the coming
days,” Dixon said. Louis Sandidge, who got to know Shiflett while district
superintendent for Entergy in the Navasota area in the early 1980s, said his
friend “had a vision for unity in the county to set goals and to accomplish big
things.” “He would have taken the whole county to heart and done what’s best,”
Sandidge said. Sandidge stood in for Shiflett at rallies on more than one
occasion after the candidate’s illness was diagnosed. Funeral services for
Shiflett will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Christ Our Light Catholic Church in
Navasota. Burial will follow in Oakland Cemetery.

Shifflett: Father died one day, son the next
10:50 PM CDT on Friday, July 15, 2005
By JOE SIMNACHER / The Dallas Morning News
A memorial service will be today for a Grand Prairie father and son who died a
day apart last week. Paul L. Shifflett died in his sleep July 7, the day before
his 53rd birthday. He suffered a fatal seizure at his son's house in Grand
Prairie. The next day at the same house, 35-year-old Troy L. Shifflett died of a
heart attack. Nancy Shifflett, Paul's wife and Troy's mother, said that though
heart disease runs in her husband's family, she thinks her husband's death
brought on their son's heart attack. "He was in shock," she said. A memorial
service for the father and son will be at 2 p.m. today at Lighthouse Baptist
Church, 410 N.E. 27th St. in Grand Prairie. Troy Shifflett had been a carrier
for The Dallas Morning News since he was 10 years old. "He wanted to sell the
newspaper," his mother said. He decided to become an entrepreneur in elementary
school, she said, and got a newspaper route and worked at McDonald's. Troy
Shifflett graduated from high school in The Colony. He worked hard at building
his business as an independent contractor for The News, his mother said, and
received many awards for his efforts. Paul Shifflett was born in Fairfield,
Calif., and moved to Texas with his family as a child. He graduated from North
Dallas High School and became a forklift mechanic, his wife said. In 1989, Paul
Shifflett started his own forklift repair business, Industrial Maintenance Lift
Specialist in Irving. The company grew to have 15 employees but was hard-hit by
a slowdown in the shipping business that followed the Sept. 11 terrorist
attacks, his wife said. The couple tired to rebuild the business, but Mr.
Shifflett was disabled in an industrial accident, she said. The couple then
moved in with their son. Ms. Shifflett said the deaths in her immediate family
have left her dazed and concerned about the future. "We're scared," she said,
adding that she and her daughter-in-law are determined to keep the newspaper
delivery business. In addition to his wife, Paul Shifflett is survived by a son,
Bobby Shifflett of Carrollton, and four grandchildren. In addition to his mother
and brother, Troy Shifflett is survived by his wife, Michelle Shifflett of Grand
Prairie; a son, Chey Shifflett of Grand Prairie, and a daughter, Rebekah
Shifflett of Grand Prairie.
