The War of 1812

Nathaniel Shiflett

Thirtieth Congress
Report No. 290 to acc. HR No. 286 House of Representatives
Nathaniel Shiflett
February 29, 1848.

Mr. Wiley, from the Committee on Invalid Pensions Made the following REPORT:

The Committee on Invalid Pensions, to whom was referred the petition of Nathaniel Shiflett, of Albemarle County, Virginia, praying for a pension in consequence of an injury received in the late war with Great Britian, have had the same under consideration and submit the following report:

It appears that the petitioner was a soldier in the company of Captain McCulloch in the 88th regiment; that afterwards, being attached to the 7th regiment, 4th Brigade, in a company under the command of Lieutenant W. Good, and while in the line of his duty, was injured by the fall of a tree upon his thigh, while assisting in clearing a road from Camp Carter to Camp Holly, in the State of Virginia. This wound, according to the certificates of two surgeons, has given rise to a chronic inflammation and occasional ulceration, and two thirds disables the petitioner from the performance of manual labor, and that he will probably be so for life. These facts are well proved by Lieutenant Goodman, under whom he served, and by others who were present when petitioner was injured, and who have known him ever since.

The papers in the case are properly authenticated, and the petitioner's character for truth well sustained. The committee, therefore, recommend him to the favorable consideration of Congress, and report a bill for his relief.
