CLAIM OF WIDOW FOR SERVICE PENSION,
Under the provisions of Sections 4736 to 4740, (inclusive,) Revised Statutes, and the Act of March 9th, 1878.

            On this 12 day of August, one thousand eight hundred and [blank] Eliza J. Shiflet, personally appeared before me, (illegible) Clerk of the Court of Albemarle, the same being a court of record within and for the county and State aforesaid, (1) Eliza J. Shiflet aged 59 years, a resident of Albemarle County, in the State of Virginia, who, being duly sworn according to the law, declares that she is the widow of (2) John Shiflet deceased, who was the identical (3) John Shiflet, who served under the name of (4) John Shiflet as a (5) Private in the company commanded by Captain Bibb, in the Regiment of Virginia Militia commanded by _____________ in the war of 1812: that her said husband (6) was drafted at on or about the ______ day of ______________, A.D. _______, for the term of ______________, and continued in actual service in said war for the term of (7) ________________, and whose services terminated, by reason of (8) honorable discharge, at __________________, on the ______________________ day of ______________, A.D. ________. She further states that the following is a full description of her said husband at the time of his enlistment, viz: (9) (applicant was not acquainted with soldier at date of enlistment ) but had blue eyes, light hair, about six feet two & was from 96 to 100 years old when he died in 1879. She further states that she was married to the said Soldier, at the city (or town) of Brown's Cove, in the county of Albemarle, and in the State of Virginia, on the 24 day of Decr, A.D. 1846 by one (10) Ballard Gibson, who was a (11) Minister of the Gospel; and that her name before her said marriage was Eliza J. Via; and she further states that (12) said John Shiflet had been previously married to Betsy Campbell who died about August 1845 and that her said husband (13) John Shiflet, died at Albemarle County, in the State of Virginia, on the 15 day of April, A.D. 1879, and that she has not again married; and she further declares that the following have been the places of residence of herself and her said husband sine the date of his discharge from the Army, viz: (14) In Albemarle County, Virginia. She makes this declaration for the purpose of obtaining the pension to which she may be entitled under Sections 4736 to 4740, (inclusive,) Revised Statutes, and the Act of March 9th, 1878, and hereby appoints __________________, of ________________, her true and lawful attorney, to prosecute her claim; and she further declares that she has heretofore made________ application for (15) She made application same time this year but the papers were returned for informality, .

We Ira H. Via & Amanda Via, citizens of the aforesaid County & State, do hereby certify under oath that we were present at the marriage of John Shiflet & Eliza Shiflet (whose maiden name was Eliza Via) and that they were married in the County of Albemarle on the 24th day of December 1846, by B. E. Gibson who was a minister of the Gospel, And that we have lived near them ever Since the marriage and Know that they cohabited together as Husband & wife up to the death of the said John Shiflet, And that she is now a widow And that we have no interest in said claim, given under our hands this 23 day of Apl 1879.
