CLAIM OF WIDOW FOR SERVICE PENSION,
Under the provisions of Sections 4736 to 4740, (inclusive,) Revised Statutes, and the Act of March 9th, 1878.

            On this 2nd day of June, A.D. one thousand eight hundred and eighty-three personally appeared before me Joseph H. Shue, Clerk of the Circuit Court, the same being a court of record within and for the county and State aforesaid, (1) Charlotte Shifflett aged 87 years, a resident of Rockingham Co., in the State of Virginia, who, being duly sworn according to the law, declares that she is the widow of (2) Micajah Shifflett deceased, who was the identical (3) Micajah Shifflett, who served under the name of (4) Micajah Shifflett as a (5) Private in the company commanded by Captain Robert McCullock, in the Seventh Regiment of Virginia Militia commanded by Lt. Col. William Gray in the war of (6) 1812: that her said husband (7) was drafted at Orange County, VA on or about the 29th day of August, A.D. 1814, for the term of (8) 6 months, and continued in actual service in said war for the term of (8) 5 months and 22 days, and whose services terminated, by reason of (9) honorable discharge, at Camp Carter, on the 21st day of February, A.D. 1815. She further states that the following is a full description of her said husband at the time of his enlistment, viz: (10) Age 18 years; Occupation, Farmer; Born in Orange County, Virginia; height 5 ft. 5 in.; Complexion, Light; Blue eyes and dark hair. She further states that she was married to the said Micajah Shifflett, at the city (or town) of Gibsontown, in the county of Orange, and in the State of Virginia, on the _____ day of August, A.D. about 1819 or 1820 by one (10) John Gibson, who was a (11) Minister of the Gospel; and that her name before her said marriage was Charlotte Shifflett; and that she has not remarried since the death of said Micajah Shifflett; and she further states that (13) Neither she nor her said husband, Micajah Shifflett, was ever married previous to their marriage with each other and and that her said husband (13) Micajah Shifflett, died at Cross Keys, in the State of Virginia, on the _____ day of November, A.D. 1865, and she further declares that the following have been the places of residence of herself and her said husband since the date of his discharge from the Army, viz: (15)Orange and Rockingham Counties, Virginia,. She makes this declaration for the purpose of obtaining the pension to which she may be entitled under Sections 4736 to 4740, (inclusive,) Revised Statutes, and the Act of March 9th, 1878, and hereby appoints G.W. and B.R. Berline, of Harrisonburg, her true and lawful attorney, to prosecute her claim.
And she further declares that she has heretofore made no application for (16) pension and that her residence is in the county of Rockingham, State of Virginia, and that her post office address is Harrisonburg, Rockingham County, Virginia.

Also personally appeared Joseph Heuton, aged 57 years, residing in Rockingham Co., and George Begoon, aged 47 years, residing in Rockingham Co., persons whom I certify to be respectable and entitled to credit, and who being by me duly sworn, say that they have known the said Charlotte Shifflett for 23 to 25 years and for 33 years, respectively; that they were present and saw her sign her name (or make her mark) to the foregoing declaration; that they have every reason to believe, from the appearance of said claimant and their acquaintance with her, that she is the identical person who was the wife of the identical (17) Micajah Shifflett, who rendered the service alleged in the above application (in the company of Captain Robert McCullock, in the said 7th regiment of Virginia Militia in the war of 1812) by the following named facts and circumstances, viz: (18) By their long acquaintance with her and her said husband, and they know she has not remarried since the death of Micajah Shifflett her husband, and that they have no interest in the prosecution of this claim.

Sworn to and subscribed before me this 2nd day of June, A.D.1883; and I hereby certify that the contents of the above declaration, &c., were fully made known and explained to the applicant and witnesses before swearing, including the words ___________, erased, and the words ____________, added; and that I have no interest, direct or indirect, in the prosecution of this claim.
