This Indenture made the first day of December in the year of our Lord 1826 Between William Shifflet and Franky his wife of the County of Augusta and State of Virginia of the one part and Joseph Ross of the County and State aforesaid of the other part. Witnesseth that for and in consideration of the sum of Eighty Dollars to them in hand paid by the said Joseph Ross the receipt where of is hereby acknowledged have granted bargained and sold and by these presents do grant bargain and sell unto the said Joseph Ross his heirs and assigns a certain tract or parcel of land lying in the County of Augusta adjoining Lands of B. Davis and others and Bounded as follows. Beginning at an ash and chesnut corner to Davis S38 W90 poles to a (blank) S73 E5 poles to a Hickory and Chesnut S58 E47 1/2 poles to a hickory N58 E38 3/4 poles to (blank) corner to Davis S51 3/4 E119 poles to the Beginning containing by estimation forty acres together with all and singular the appurtenances thereunto belonging or in any --- appertaining. To have and to hold the said tract or parcel of land with its appurtenances to the only proper use and behoof of him the said Joseph Ross his heirs and assigns forever and the said William Shifflet and Franky his wife for themselves their heirs executors and administrators do covenant with the said Joseph Ross his heirs and assigns that they the said Wm Shifflet and Franky his wife their heirs and the said tract of parcel of Land with its appurtennaces unto the said Joseph Ross his heirs and of all and of every person or persons whatsoever Shall and Will Warrant and forever defend by these presents. James S. Bush and Rebecca his wife to Wm. Shifflett
October 14 1837

This indenture made and entered into this 14th day of October in the year of the Lord one thousand eight hundred and thirty seven between James S. Bush and his wife Rebecca of the County of Augusta and State of Virginia of the one part and Wm. Shifflett of the County and State aforesaid of the other part. Witnesseth, that the said Bush and Rebecca his wife for and in consideration of the sum of Three hundred and eighty one dollars current money of Virginia to them in hand paid by the said Shifflett. The receipt whereof is hereby acknowledged, have granted, bargained and sold unto the said Shifflett and his heirs forever a certain tract or parcel of land lying in the County of Augusta and adjoining the lands of Geo. M. Coiner, the said Coiner and other and lying and being on the north side of the Blue Ridge and containing by a recent survey one hundred and ninety acres be the same more or less and bounded as follows, Beginning at a rock and hickory S. 52 E. 96 poles to forked red oak, N. 52 E. 43 poles to a chestnut oak and hickory, S. 58 E. 42 poles to a hickory, N. 58 E. 54 poles to a white oak on top of the mountain, N. 35 E. 54 poles to a locust and chestnut corner to George M. Coiner and with his line N. 45 W. 92 poles to a black oak and hickory, S. 55 W. 52 poles to a chestnut, N. 73 W. 36 poles to a chestnut and hickory, S. 48 W. 50 poles to a chestnut and Spanish oak, S. 84 W. 9 poles to a hickory and gum and thence S. 30 W. 74 poles to the beginning; together with all and singular the appurtenances thereunto belonging or in any wise appertaining. To have and to hold the said tract of land with its appurtenances unto the said Wm. Shifflett, his heirs and assigns to the only proper use and behoof of him the said Wm. Shifflett, his heirs and assigns forever and the said James S. Bush and Rebecca his wife for themselves, their heirs and executors do covenant with the said Wm. Shifflett, his heirs and assigns that they the said James S. Bush and Rebecca his wife will forever warrant and defend unto the said Shifflett and his heirs and assigns the above named land from themselves and their heirs forever. In witness whereof we have hereunto set our hands and seals the day and year first above written.

We, Robert Guy and John Porterfield, Justices of the Peace in the County aforesaid in the State of Virginia do hereby certify that James S. Bush party to a certain deed bearing the date of the 14th of October 1837 and hereunto annexed personally appeared before us in our County aforesaid and acknowledged the same to be his act and deed and desired us to certify the said acknowledgment to the Clerk of the County Court of Augusta in order that the said deed may be recorded. Given under our hands and seals this 14th day of October 1837.

Augusta County.
We, Robert Guy and John Porterfield, Justices in the said County and State of Virginia do hereby certify that Rebecca Bush the wife of James S. Bush, parties to a certain deed bearing date on the 14th day of October 1837 and hereunto annexed personally appeared before us in our County aforesaid and being examined by us privately and apart from her husband and having the deed aforesaid fully explained to her, she the said Rebecca Bush acknowledged the same to be her act and deed and declared that she had willingly signed, sealed and delivered the same and that she wishes not to retract it. Given under our hands and seals this 14th day of Oct. 1837.

Shifflett was this day presented in the office aforesaid and having been acknowledged by the said Bush and Wife (she having been also privately examined and relinquished her dower) before two Justices of the Peace and with the certificates of the said Justices hereon endorsed is admitted into record.

This indenture made the first of March in the year of our Lord eighteen hundred and forty seven between James S. Bush and Rebecca his wife of the County of Augusta and the State of Virginia of the one part and William Shifflett of the County and State aforesaid of the other part. Witnesseth that the J.S. Bush and Rebecca his wife for and in consideration of the sum of three hundred and fifty dollars lawful money of Virginia to them in hand paid by Wm. Shifflett. The receipt whereof is hereby acknowledged have granted, bargained and sold by these presents do grant, bargain and sell with the said Shifflett, his heirs and assigns a certain tract or parcel of land situated and being in the County of Augusta on the south side of the Blue Ridge and adjoining the lands of George Coiner's heirs, Jacob Coiner and others containing one hundred and sixty five acres be the same more or less and bounded as follows; Beginning at two maples S. 71 1/3 E. 49 poles to a Spanish oak, S. 49 3/4 W. 129 poles to a chestnut oak and red oak, S. 88 W. 72 poles to four white oaks, N. 11 W. 187 poles to two chestnut oaks, S. 79 1/2 W. 35 poles to two pines, N. 23 3/4 W. 24 poles to two pines, S. 86 E. 178 poles to white oak and pine sapling, N. 35 E. 115 poles to the beginning. Also one other small tract of land adjoining the above containing eleven and one half acres and bounded as follows; N. 55 W. 34 poles to a Chestnut Bush corner N. 40 E. 54 poles to the beginning. Together with all and singular the appurtenances thereunto belonging or in any wise appertaining. To have and to hold the said tracts of land with its appurtenances unto the said Wm. Shifflett, his heirs and assigns forever to the only proper use and behoof of him the said Shifflett, his heirs and assigns forever the said James S. Bush and Rebecca his wife, for themselves, their heirs, executors and administrators do covenant with the said Wm. Shifflett his heirs and assigns that they the said James S. Bush and Rebecca his wife, their heirs, executors and administrators the said tracts of land with the its appurtenances unto the said Wm. Shifflett, his heirs and assigns against the claim or claims of said James S. Bush and Rebecca his wife and their heirs forever. The said James S. Bush and Rebecca his wife shall and will forever defend by these presents. In witness whereof the said James S. Bush and Rebecca his wife have hereunto set their hands and seals on the day first above written.

Shifflett and Franky his wife, Absalom Shifflett and Rhoda A. his wife and Henry Ross and Franky his wife of the County of Augusta and State of Virginia of the one part and Braxton Davis of the County and State aforesaid of the other part. This Indenture Made the 26th day of April in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and forty seven Between Joseph Ross and Winny his wife of the County of Augusta and State of Virginia of the one part and Braxton Davis of the County and State aforesaid of the other part. Witnesseth that the said Joseph Ross and Winny his wife for and in considreation of the sum of Eighty Dollars lawful money of Virginia to them in hand paid by the said Braxton Davis the receipt whereof is hereby acknowledged have granted bargained and sold and by these presents do grant bargain and sell unto the said Braxton Davis his heirs and assigns a certain tract or parcel of land lying on the West Side of the Blue ridge of Mountains in the county of Augusta adjoining the lands of said B. Davis containing Forty Acres and Bounded as follows Viz Beginning at an as? and chesnut corner to said Davis and with his line S35 E120 poles to a Hickory on the Mountain S56 W59 poles to a Hickery N53 W118 poles to a new line of Davis and with the same N 26 3/4 E19 poles to the Begining together with all and singular the appurtenances thereunto belonging or in any wise appertaining. To have and to hold unto the said Braxton Davis his heirs and assigns forever to the only proper use and behoof of him the said Braxton Davis his heirs and assigns forever. . . This indenture made this 11th day of September 1847 between Watson Westfall of the County of Lewis and State of Virginia and Rachel Westfall, wife of Watson Westfall of the one part and William Shifflett of the County of Lewis and State of Virginia of the other part. Witnesseth that the said Watson Westfall and Rachel his wife for and in consideration of the sum of two hundred dollars current money of the State of Virginia to them in hand paid, the receipt whereof is hereby acknowledged have granted bargained, sold, released and confirmed and by these presents do grant, bargain, sell, release and confirm to the said Wm. Shifflett, his heirs and assigns forever all that tract or parcel of land situated in the County of Lewis and State of Virginia on the head of the Stone Coal Waters adjoining land of Joseph Ligget, Jacob Crites and William Sedwick and bounded as follows; Beginning at a black gum Joseph Ligget's corner. Standing on a line between said Ligget and said Shifflett and running thence north 68 east 32 poles to a hickory, thence north 22 east 84 poles to a chestnut oak, thence north 68 east to a white oak and dogwood at Jacob Crites' corner, thence north 26 west 54 poles to a sassafras, now down Jacob Crites' corner, thence north 59 east 60 poles to a hickory and spruce, standing near the Big road, on the east side of the road corner to Jacob Crites and William Sedwick. Thence with the Big road to and with William Sedwick's lane to the forks of the road opposite the said Sedwick's house to his corner and the corner of Levi Ligget's, thence with Levi Ligget's reversed to a small white oak standing on Joseph Ligett's line to the beginning containing thirty three acres more or less. To have and to hold with all and singular the premises and appurtenances thereunto belonging or in anywise appertaining thereto unto the said William Shifflett, his heirs and assigns forever. The said Watson Westfall, his heirs and executors bind themselves to forever warrant and by these presents defend against all rights and titles whatsoever. This indenture made this 28th day of December 1849 between Absalom Shifflett and Mary his wife, William M. Shifflett, Henry Fisher and Franky Jane his wife of the County of Lewis and State of Virginia, Sampson F. Shifflett and Amy his wife, Killis Herron and Winny his wife of the County of Randolph and state aforesaid of one part and Robert H. Clark of the said County of Lewis the other part. Whereof William Shifflett died intestate, seized and possessed a certain piece of land situated in the County of Lewis aforesaid on the head waters of stone Coal Creek and herein more particularly described, leaving the said Absalom Shifflett, William M. Shifflett, Franky Jane, the wife of Henry Fisher, Sampson F. Shifflett and Winny the wife of Killis Herron, his only children heirs to inherit the said tract of land. Now this indenture witnesseth that the said Absalom Shifflett and Mary his wife, William M. Shifflett, Henry Fisher and Franky Jane his wife, Sampson F. Shifflett and Amy his wife and Killis Herron and Winny his wife for and in consideration of the sum two hundred and twenty five dollars lawful money of Virginia, payable as follows; Fifty dollars on the 15th day of February, next fifty dollars on the 25th day of December 1850, fifty dollars due on the 25th day of December 1851, fifty dollars due on the 25th day of December 1852, and the balance of twenty five dollars due on the 25th day of December 1853 for which several sums amounting 225 dollars the said Robert H. Clark hath extended his single bills payable to the said Absalom Shifflett by and with consent of the other parties to this deed hath granted, bargained, sold, aliened, released and confirmed and by these presents do grant, bargain, sell, alien, release and confirm unto the said Robert H. Clark, his heirs and assigns forever a certain piece of land situated, lying and being in the County of Lewis aforesaid, on the head waters of Stone Coal Creek adjoining the lands of Joseph Liggett, Jacob Crites and William Ludwick, and being the same which Watson Westfall and wife Rachel conveyed to the said William Shifflett, deceased, by deed bearing date the 11th day of December 1847 and recorded in the Clerks office of the County of Lewis in book N. page 185 and being described in the said deed book as follows; Beginning at a black gum Joseph Liggetts corner standing on line between the said Liggett and the said Shifflett and running north 65 east 32 poles to a hickory, thence south 22 east 84 poles to a chestnut, thence north 68 east 26 to a white oak and dogwood, Jacob Crites corner, thence north 59 east 60 poles to a hickory near the big road on the east side of the said road corner to Jacob Crites and William Ludwick, thence with the big road and William Ludwick line to the forks of the road, opposite the said Ludwick house to his corner and corner of Levi Liggetts thence with Levi Liggetts to a small white pine standing on Joseph Liggetts line, thence south 12 west with Liggetts line to the Beginning containing thirty three acres be it more or less together with all and singular, the appurtenances there unto belonging or in any wise appertaining. To have and to hold the above described piece of land containing thirty three acres be it more or less with appurtenances there unto belonging or in any wise appertaining unto the said Robert H. Clark, his heirs and assigns to and for only the proper use, benefit and behoof of him the said Robert H. Clark, his heirs and assigns forever land they the said Absalom Shifflett and Mary his wife, Sampson F. Shifflett and Amy his wife, William M. Shifflett, Killis Herron and Winny his wife and Henry Fisher and Franky Jane his wife do hereby covenant, promise and agree to and with the said Robert H. Clark, his heirs and assigns that they do hereby warrant and forever defend the title to the said described piece of land against the claim or claims of themselves of their heirs and against the claim or claims of all and every other person or persons whatsoever. Claiming the same unto the said Robert H. Clark, his heirs and assigns forever, subject to the payment to the several single bills the said Clark extended to the said Absalom Shifflett for the purchase money.

In writing whereof the said Absalom Shifflett and Mary his wife, William M. Shifflett, Henry Fisher and Franky Jane his wife, Sampson F. Shifflett and Amy his wife and Killis Herron and Winny his wife have hereunto set their hands and seals the day and year first within written.
