The following items through 1714 are given for information only. They may be connected to the later Shiflett family of Orange and Albemarle Counties.

26 Apr 1712
John Shiflett, Elizabeth Collins and Gilbert Ellitt were imported into Virginia by George Slaughter. Slaughter received 145 acres in St. John's Parish, King William Co., on the west side of Cohoke Swamp, adj. land he lives on and of Thomas King. Cavaliers and Pioneers - Abstracts of Virginia Land Patents and Grants by Nell Marion Nugent, vol. 3. p. 127. VA Patents and Grants, Vol. 10, p.

15 Jun 1714
John Madison and Daniel Coleman received 2000 acres in King William Co., for transporting 40 persons, including John Sistlett and Stephen Sistlett. VA Patents and Grants, Bk 10, p. 168

16 Dec 1714
George Alves received 4843 acres in New Kent Co. for transporting 97 persons including Jno. Sislett and Stephen Sislett. VA Patents and Grants, Bk 10, p. 212

I think that John Shiflett was born possibly around 1715.

I think that John Shiflett Sr. was born possibly around 1715.

Persuant to an Ord. of Vestry, wee have seen the following peaceably processioned Vizt: John Dickinson part of 4000 a., Thomas Ballard 365 a., Abraham Allen 200a., William Coursey 200 a. whereon John Shiflett now lives, John Poindexter 800 a. - - Fredericksville Par., Vestry Book, V. 2, p. 5 [in Louisa County 1742-1762]

30 Jan 1749/50
William Coursey to John Dickenson of Fredericksville Par., Louisa Co., - - dividing line between Abraham Allen and the other moiety where John Shiflet formerly lived on the lower side of Piney Mt. - - Recorded 24 Jul 1750 Louisa Co., VA, Deed Bk A, p. 395-6

I believe this John Shiflett was the father of John Shiflett Jr., Bland Shiflett, Richard Shiflett and Stephen Shiflett who seem to be of similar age to John Jr. Most of these stayed in Orange Co.

John Shiflett Jr. is thought to have been born about 1735-1740.

There might have been some other activities of John Sr. in Albemarle Co. but I have not been able to separate them from John Shiflett Jr. beyond the Land Tax and the Overseers of the Poor Book. John Shifett Sr. was never found in the PPT of Albemarle Co. which could indicate he never lived in Albemarle but Orange, or never had any personal property that could be taxed or was old and infirm and that he was exempt from paying the PPT. I do not know which is more likely but I do not think that they would have made payments to a resident of Orange Co. That would not be their responsibility.

11 Nov 1760
John Ogg and Elizabeth his Wife of County of Orange sell to John Shiflet one certain tract of land containing one hundred twenty acres in Albemarle at the foot of the Mountains on Kids Creek. See full land description in 1773, when the deed is entered into Albemarle Court records.

Nov 1773
Following deed of indenture entered into court record of Albemarle County: Indenture of 11 Nov 1760 between John Ogg and Elizabeth his Wife of County of Orange who sell to John Shiflet one certain tract of land containing one hundred twenty acres in Albemarle at the foot of the Mountains on Kids Creek and bounded beginning in the east side of Kids Creek in the old line, running thence with the same north east to a chesnut red oak, thence south east to a locust, thence north east to a chesnut red oak, thence north to a red oak, thence along several lines of marked trees to two chesnut red oaks on west side of Kids Creek corner to Benjamin Huntsman, thence down the meanders of the Creek to the first station. Albemarle Co., VA, Deed Bk 6, p. 387-9

8 Apr and 15 Dec 1773
Two orders to arrest John Shiflet at suit of Andrew Shepherd assignee of John Ogg for debt Albemarle County Court Orders, 1773 folder , #1, p. 40 Weisiger

[Ed. note: the following road order is included here because it occurs after the known death of John Jr. Either the court made a mistake by including him, or this is John Sr. or another John]

7 Dec 1795
Joseph Goodman is appointed a surveyor of the road leading by the barracks from John Shifletts to the river with the following male laboring titheables to keep same in repair - - -, John Shiflett, Joel Shiflett, - - - , Lewis Shiflett - - - . VA, Albemarle Co., Road Orders, 1795-1798, p.

There might have been some activities of John Sr. in Albemarle Co. but I have not been able to separate them from John Shiflett Jr. beyond the Land Tax and the Overseers of the Poor Book. John Shifett Sr. was never found in the PPT of Albemarle Co. which could indicate he never lived in Albemarle but Orange, or never had any personal property that could be taxed. I think the latter is the situation as he was given payments by the Overseers of the Poor. I do not think that they would have made payments to a resident of Orange Co. That would not be their responsibility.

ALBEMARLE CO., VA, OVERSEERS OF THE POOR BOOK (formerly St. Ann's Parish Vestry book)

This book was turned over to the county after the Vestry system was terminated at the end of 1785, and The Overseers of the Poor replaced the work of the St. Ann's Vestry and the Fredericksville Vestry of the Established Church. This book covers the time period 1786-1807. Payments were made by the county to people who were in need of assistance. Probably these were for items that they needed to buy and could not make.

[In the following LT means Land Tax and OPB means Overseers of the Poor Book.]

John Sr. was never listed in the PPT (Personal Property Tax books) of Albemarle Co. This could indicate that he was not a resident as PPT was paid in the county of residence. But as the entries below show he received payments from the Overseers of the Poor. This certainly means he was a resident of Albemarle Co. and in the part that was Fredericksville Parish (the NW part of the county). [Ed. Note: He may not be listed in the PPT because he was exempt due to age, but if so, we should have found a record of that.]
