Editor's Note: Information appearing in brackets [ ] has been entered by the submitter. Information appearing in quotes “ ” is script which actually appears on the markers.

Buck Mountain Episcopal Church is located in Earlysville, Virginia, and was established in 1747. Originally, it was located closer to the Blue Ridge Mountains, but was moved--piece by piece--to its current location during the mid-1800's. It has been listed as a historic landmark and is in the process of being restored. Services are still regularly held at the church each Sunday at 10:00 a.m. The bell tower which was located to the right of the church is no longer standing and a new addition has been added to the left of the original structure. The cemetery is located on the church grounds and there is an old stone wall between the cemetery and the road. This area, like many others, is developing and there were signs that some of the ground markers had been destroyed or rendered unreadable due to some type of motor vehicle being driven across them. This church and cemetery is of particular importance to me because my father attended services here as a boy and my grandparents, uncles, aunts, and parents are buried here.

NOTE: from Olen Morris: The Christian Church Cemetery in Dyke is next to the Evergreen Church of the Brethren.ÊThe Evergreen Cemetery is across the road from the church and has a rock wall. I think some researchers are confusing the two cemeteries. The original Christian Church was located next to the cemetery, however, when a new church was built it was located several miles away. Thus, most people who visit the cemetery find one church and two cemeteries.

    From Ruth Porter:
    50+ graves
    Shenandoah National Park
Milepost 69.9 Powell's Gap, north on AT, old wagon road

    Notes from Ruth Porter:
Tried to find cemetery: August 1994 and November 1994

July 1995 called Ken Steeber of Luray, VA. He referred me to another Park volunteer, Hal Slover.

Mr. Slover has done a lot of research on Park cemeteries. He knew about this one, he was just there in March and May. He follows an old road in from Smith Roach Gap. He sent a list of inscriptions, description of the route and a map.

November 5, 1995 - met Hal Slover at Smith Roach Gap. We hiked, bushwhacked, crawled and scrambled thru briars for about 45 minutes, but we found the cemetery. It was just down from an old road, but I don't know if I could find it again, even if I wanted to. Mr. Slover used a Global Positioning System (GPS) to pinpoint the location. (N 38 20 077 and W 78 35 178)

From Ruth Porter: These are the inscriptions on 13 stones, the rest are too worn to read.
Each Inscription is followed by my notes in italics.

    Correction from Barbara S. Hensley:
This is Rebecca (Shifflett) Shifflett, dau. of Solomon & Frances Collier Shifflett who married Alfred P. Shifflett (brother to Angus Jackson and sons of Turner & Mildred Powell Shifflett). Rebecca Morris (dau. of Beverly & Deliah Morris) is buried in the Elk Run Cemetery along side of her son Honorias "Arias" Shifflett in Elkton, Va. She was born in 1850 and died in 1926. Amos Shifflett, grandson of Alfred & Rebecca, told me before he died that his Grandmother Rebecca was buried there.

Was Martha a 10 year old sister who died the day after her 1 year old brother? From Bob Klein: I believe these are the daughters of Samuel George LongÊ and Frances Jane Shiflett d/o of Turner Shiflett and Mildred Powell.Ê Martha Jane Long and sister Georgie Long.

I first learned of this cemetery from The Undying Past of Shenandoah National Park by Darwin Lambert. On page 284, he writes this description:
HENSLEY/SHIFFLETT/POWELL: Sometimes called Turner Shifflett or Hill Shifflett (for Turner's son, Hilary). On west side of Roundtop Mt., quite far down, about 200 ft. short of (behind) old house site, on park-land tract 47a, Solomon J. Hensley. Cemetery 50 by 50 ft., overgrown. Fifty or more burials. Native stone markers and a marble headstone for Angus J. Shifflett. OR find from Powell Gap, starting northward on the Appalachian Trail, then following old wagon road that diverges, about 1 mi. to house site. Inscriptions as far back as 1850. Honorias Powell, who owned a thousand acres nearby (and for whom gap probably named) was buried here, according to Billie Jo Monger. Turner Shifflett was a grandson of Powell. - NPS

    November 2000
From Cleve Powell and Janet Lloyd:
Cleve organized a hike to the cemetery in November 2000 in which about 30 researchers took part. Janet and her father took photos of the cemetery. With Cleve's surveying experience, he was able to plat out the cemetery. With Janet's photos, we were able to better read the tombstones:

Sketch of Hensley/Shiflett/Powell Cemetery measured Nov. 4th, 2000 by Jubal and Eugene Powell and Charles Webster (not a survey). Revised Dec. 17, 2000 to show updated information by Janet Lloyd. M.J. Shifflett stone found by Janet not shown on plat.

    Prize Hill Cemetery
    submitted by:
Julia Crosswell   and Bob Klein bobklein99@comcast.net

    Located on Route 810

Prize Hill is a large cemetery. Someone told me they had taken pictures of every Shiflett buried there. I hope they will contact me, so we can include the information. I spent about five hours at Prize Hill and was able to record maybe 1/4 to 1/3 of the cemetery. I had taken photos of some of the older and more interesting tombstones, but that roll of film turned out blank. There are many depression and fieldstone graves at Prize Hill and it includes a “pauper's” section in the middle of the graveyard that is unmarked.

Prize Hill butts up to Lick Mountain on the south east and across the road and to the northwest is County line mountain and due west is Loft Mountain. This is really the heart of Shiflet country. The cemetery is on a slope on a hill side, probably a 25 - 30 degree slope. In the upper (meaning uphill) section of the cemetery in the south corner, there is a group of bushes with a large stone. . .it looks like a little hill. It is probably a natural feature of the cemetery.

This listing is incomplete. Bob Klein sent in all Shiflett graves for which he had pictures, but there are still Shiflett and others missing.

In reviewing the layout of the graves, the cemetery is actually divided into family sections. Doing the tombstones in a straight line down the rows loses the info on separate family sections unless one could plat it.

Thanks to the following people for sending in additional information on Prize Hill: Becky Grainger grainger@hiwaay.net, George M. Shilflett gmsjws@juno.com for pictures and info on the Morris group; and also to Pat Bednarbednarb@bellatlantic.net for the info and the photos she sent in.

Starting in the south corner of the cemetery, which is at the top of the hill (mountain above) and to your right when you enter the cemetery:

Per Becky Grainger: The following Garrisons were moved from the Garrison Family Cemetery near Earlysville. This cemetery was on Garrison Lane, now named Lawson Lane. The son of Mr. Lawson who had originally bought this land from the Garrisons tried to build over the graves. The family found out and had them moved to Prize Hill to rest with so many of their family. All of them except Martha Virginia Dunn Garrison died of typhoid fever in 1913.:

Shifflett/Lam Cemetery near Swift Run Gap

There are 8 identifiable grave sites in the cemetery near Swift Run Gap. Vernangus A. Lam, Myrtle L. Shifflett, Salena V. Shiflet are the only three still readable. An old bench in the cemetery was built by Russell and Dorsey Shifflett.

Vernangus' stone has a hand pointing upward engraved on it and this poem:

We have lost our darling Mother
She has bid us all adieu
She has gone to live in heaven
And her person is lost to sight.
In her son, Newton's Bible, there is a piece of paper torn from a small notebook with these 2 poems written on it and this note:
We have lost our darling Mother
She has bid us all adieu
She has gone to live in heaven
And her person is lost to view.
(Why "sight" was substituted for "view" one can only wonder)

"or this is a good one Newt you take your choice."

A precious one from us has gone,
a voice we loved is stilled
a place is vacant in our home

Her birth date from the Marriage Record is given as July 1, 1839, the inscription on her tombstone seems to read, January 1, 1839.

Sometime, maybe around the 1920's, Vernangus' son, George S., and his nephew, Herman (my grandfather), went up to the Mountain Cemetery and dug up 2 bodies: George's wife, Amanda, who had died on October 17,1892, and his baby son, Joseph Elmer, who was born on May 7, and died on June 1, 1892. They spent the night in Elkton and moved them to Waynesboro the next day in a spring wagon. They were reburied in Riverview Cemetery in Waynesboro. At this time, George was living in Waynesboro and working for Riverview Cemetery. I have checked with the cemetery and they don't seem to have any records of when they were buried.

    Slayton Shifflett Cemetery

This is the Slayton Shifflett Cemetery. It's about 30 x 30 and has a fence around it. Located in Bacon Hollow, and is mentioned in one of the deeds. I forgot the number of unmarked graves there. Copied most of the stones as they were.

Shifflett Cemetery by Grace Memorial Church
    submitted by:
    Betty Miller BJKMiller@aol.com INVALID

Located on State Rd. 340 from Grace Memorial Church, Lynnwood, Va (Rockingham Co.) to Rd. 659 for 1 1/2 miles. On right side of road on hill. Owner- James W. Shifflett. From Larry Shifflett: I have been to the Shifflett Cemetery behind Grace Episcopal Church a number of times. Although most of the people buried in the grave yard attended Grace Church, the Cemetery is not associated with the Church. It is located approx. 1/4 mile behind the church well off the dirt road leading into the mountains. The cemetery was started on the land of Robert Thomas Shiflett, son of Asa and Jane Shifflett. There was a man named Albert Shifflett, grandson of Robert T., who 'boarded' with my Grandparents when I was young. He owned, mowed and took care of the graveyard until his death from T.B.. He was never married and the property went to his neices and nephews, who still own and maintain the property.

Information from Book: Church and Family Cemeteries of Eastern Section of Rockingham Co., Va. Information collected by Massanuten Chapter of DAR

The church mentioned here is the church I attended until I moved away from VA. I was so surprised to see this information because I don't remember this cemetery anywhere near the church.
