  • 8 Oct 1800 On the petition of John Ogg against Thomas Shiflett the suit is continued until next December Court and on the motion of the ptff by his atty a commission is awarded to him to take the deposition of William Lamb be done & on his giving the defendant legal notice of the time and place of taking the same. p. 189

  • 2 Feb 1802 It appearing to the Court by the affadvit of Crenshaw Fretwell that Joshua Shiflett, Betsy Bruce and Madison Shiflett had been legally summoned to appear here on yesterday to testify as to the ------ of a deed from Richard B--- to Thomas Fretwell containing by estimation two hundred acres bearing date the 4th day of July 1801 and failing to appear, On the Motion of the said Fretwell It is Ordered by the Court that they be attached for their said contempt. p. 149

  • 8 Jun 1803 George Pondexter vs. Joshua Shiflett for debt $10 p. 142

  • 10 Jun 1803 On the petition of James W. Branham assigne of George Poindexter against Joshua Shiflett for ten dollars due by single bill It appearing by the Sheriffs return that the Defendant was duly summoned he was solumny called but came not Therefore it is considered by the Court that the Plaintiff recover against him ten dollars the debt in the said single bill mentioned with interest thereon from the 4th day of April 1802 til paid and his costs by him about his suit in that behalf expended and the said Defendant in mercy. p. 142

    This day came the parties aforesaid by their attonrnies and thereupon came also a jury to wit, Nelson Harden, Craven Peyton, Richard Anderson, Wyatt Mills, David Higgenbotham, Talton Woodson, Weatherston Shellow, William Clarkson, James France, John Eastham, Benjamin Dowell and Joseph Mills who being elected tried and sworn well and truly to enquire of Damages upon their oath deside for the Plantiff Thirty pounds Eleven Shillings Damages with Interest theron to be computed after the rate of Six percenture per Annum from the thirtyeth day of January One thousand Eight hundred and one till paid and therefore it is considered by the Court that the plantiff recover against the said Defendant the said sum of Thirty pounds Eleven Shillings with Legal Interest thereon from the thirtieth day of February one hundred Eight hundred and six till past the Damages aforesaid by the Jurors aforesaid is forever aforsaid assised and his costs by him about his suit in this behalf six penses and the said Defendant in (mercy?).   • 1 Dec 1806 An Instrument of writing purporting to be the last Will and Testament of John Shiflett deceased was produced into Court and proved by the oath of John Lane and Bland Shiflett two of the witnesses thereto and continued for further Proof. p. 22

  • 1 Dec 1806 A Certificate of the relinquishment of Elizabeth Dollins wife of James Dollins of Dower in a certain Tract of land conveyed by the said James Dollins to William Woods was returned into court and orderd to be recorded. p. 23

  • 1 Dec 1806 An Indenture of Bargain and sale between Bland Shiflett and Vina his Wife of the one part and William McGehee of the other part was produced into Court and acknowledged by Bland Shiflett party thereto and the Relinquishment of Dower of the said Vina in the lands conveyed by the said Indenture taken in open Court and Orderd to be recorded. p.23/24

  • 2 Jun 1807 On the petition of Sarah Shiflett against William Allen for the Sum of twenty dollars said to be due by open account, Happenning from the Sheriffs return that the defendant had been duly summoned, he was solumny called but Came not, Therefore it is considered and ordered by the Court that the Plaintiff recover agains the said Defendant the said sum of twenty dollars with legal intereste thereon to be Computed after the rate of six per Cent per annum. from the first day of January one thousand eight hundred and four till paid and her costs by him about her suit on her behalf expended. p. 257

  • 2 Jun 1807 On the petition of Sarah Shiflett against William Allen for the sum of twenty dollars said to be due by open account It appearing from the sheriffs return that the Defendant had been duly summoned he was solumnly called but Came not, Therefore it is Considered and ordered by the Court that the Plaintiff recover against the said Defendant the said twenty dollars with Interest thereon from the eighth day of July eighteen hundred and six till paid and his costs by him about her suit on this behalf expended. p.257

    An Indictment against John Shiflett for resisting a peace officer in the Execution of his duty.

    On the motion of the attorney for the Commonwealth mon process is awarded against Lewis Shiflet Sr., Lewis Shiflet Jr., and John Shiflet to compel their appearance on the first day of the next term to show cause why information should not be filed against them upon the several presentments of the Grand Jury.

    Betsy Shiflett for unlawfully permitting a Ferro Bank to be exhibited and played at her house within twelve months last past.

    Commonwealth against Betsy Shiflett and George Space upon a presentment for permitting unlawful gaming in their respective houses..

    May 8, 1815
    Commonwealth against Lewis Shiflett upon an information for disobedience to a peace officer --- fined $12.00.
    Commonwealth against Lewis Shiflett Jr. upon an information for disobedience to a peace officer --- fined $10.00.
    Commonwealth against John Shiflett upon an information for disobedience to a peace officer --- fined $12.00.

    May 6, 1816
    An Indictment presented against Joel Shiflett and Richard Johnson (of Buck Island) for disobedience to the command of a sheriff whilst employed in the legal discharge of his duty.

    May 10, 1824
    The Commonwealth against Pleasant Shiflett upon an indictment for a Trespass, Assault & Battery committed upon the body of John Dowell - Bland Shiflett personally appears in Court and undertakes for the defendant that in case he is c---- in this prosecution he shall pay and satisfy the condemnation of the Court or remedy his body to prison in execution for the same or that he the said Bland Shiflett will do it for him. Thereupon the defendant by his attorney for plea saith he is not guilty in manner and form as in the indictment against him is alleged and of this he puts himself upon the County and the attorney for the Commonwealth likewise, whereupon came a Jury to wit John Field, Edward Hughes, John Abell, Jesse Lewis, Ruben Lindsey, William Ramsey, John Mayo, James Bishop, Samuel Hustin, John Fretwell, Dyer Moore, and James Middlefield who being duly elected - the truth to speak upon the issue joined retired out of court to consider of their verdict and after some time returned & not agreeing thereupon received their charge, were adjourned until tomorrow morning 10 o'clock.

    May 11, 1824
    Pleasant Shiflett who was this day convicted upon an Indictment for a Trespass Assault & Battery personally appeared in Court to hear the final judgment therein - whereupon it is considered by the Court that he be fined ----- for his good behavior for twelve months, himself in the sun of $100 with one security in the like sum, thereupon the said Pleasant Shiflett with Bland Shiflett his security personally appeared in Court and severally acknowledged themselves indebted to James Pleasants -- Governor or chief magistrate of the Commonwealth of Virginia and his successors in office in the sum of $100 each to be levied of their goods and chattels, lands and tenements and to the Commonwealth rendered yet upon the condition that if the said Pleasant Shiflett shall be of good behavior towards all the good citizens of the this commonwealth for twelve months and a day then this recognizance to be void else to remain in full force & virtue.

    The Commonwealth against Joel Shiflett upon an indictment for a Trespass, Assault & Battery committed upon the body of John Dowell - Francis B. Dyer [security] personally appears in Court and undertakes for the defendant ------- [case essentially same as above]

    May 18, 1837
    Isaac Shiflett, Plt. against Elizabeth Bruce, Def. }In Slander
    The defendant denies having used the words in the declaration charges, thereupon this cause is dismissed agreed.

    Oct. 20, 1857
    Ira Via, Elizabeth Shiflett, Amanda Shiflett, John Hinkle, and Horace Polly Shiflett, who are duly summoned to appear at this court as witnesses for James Shiflett at such commonwealth being solemnly called and not appearing, it is ordered that they be summoned to appear here tomorrow to show cause if any they can why they should not be fined & attached for such their contempt.

    James Shiflett, late of this county, who stands indicted of houseburning and burglary - larceny - was again led to the bar in custody of the Jailor ----- adjourned until tomorrow morning.
    Sarah Miller, late of this county, who stands indicted of houseburning and burglary - larceny - was again led to the bar in custody of the Jailor ----- adjourned until tomorrow morning.

    Oct. 25, 1857 [Both cases continued]

    Oct. 29, 1857
    James Shiflett, late of the county, who stands indicted of houseburning and burglary - larceny - was again led to the bar in custody of the Jailor ------the said James Shiflett is not guilty of the house burning as in the first indictment against him --- is guilty of grand larceny as in the 2nd indictment --- do a certain term of his imprisonment in the public jail and penitentiary house to be 2 years.

    May 13, 1858
    :Sarah Miller ---- not guilty of houseburning --- that she is guilty of the grand larceny in receiving stolen goods knowing them to be stolen ----- the terms of her imprisonment in the public jail and penitentiary house at one year and that the goods stolen are forthcoming and restored to the owner.
