GREENE COUNTY

COLLIER/SHIFFLETT/WATSON: From South River Picnic Grounds, follow Appalachian Trail southward about 1 mi. and find on left Saddleback Mountain westward rise to 3,296-ft. elevation Down small incline to right is old home site on park-land tract 77, S.B. and C.F. Collier. Cross rise northeastward. Ahead is a flat, an old road, wagon hubs, a large multiple tree arrow-carved, and the cemetery with a giant oak. About 75 burials, a joining of what were once separate cemeteries, Watson and Shifflett. FRB, GD, NPS.

HANEY/SHIFFLETT: Sometimes called Fern Hill. About .3 mi. north of Swift Run Gap and about .1 mi. east of Appalachian Trail. Maintenance with hand tools. Old fence poor; small section enclosed by good chain-link fence. At least 35 burials. Oldest: Josie A. Dean, 1856-1917; latest: Lizzie J. Knighton, 1886-1945. Three Shifflett family burials inside chain-link fence, all 1932. LB
Or park at first (unnamed) overlook north of U.S. 33. Across from parking place, eastward, follow footpath that will cross the Appalachian Trail and continue to cemetery. JCR.

ROCKINGHAM COUNTY

JEREMIAH DEAN: About 50 ft. south of old Dean Mountain Road, very near the park boundary as road egresses toward Cedar Falls. Cemetery on knoll about 200 ft. west of massive standing chimney. A few stones. One or more graves may be "Shiplets". JCR, GD.

NANGUS SHIFLETT: From roadside table on US 33, Swift Run Gap, climb south bank to old Spotswood Trail and go about .5 mi. downhill (west). Cemetery on right slope, fenced (every post with inverted tin can on top to help prevent rot), no gate, some maintenance by hand tools. About 8-25 burials. Oldest : Selena V. Shiflett, 1883-84; latest: Myrtle L Shifflett 1903-1903. Cemetery probably named for Vernangus (Angus, Nanges) Shifflett. Shiflet Lam buried here. LB, JCR, FRB

MORRIS/ SHIFFLETT: Far up Sandy Bottom "under Swift Run Overlook on Skyline Drive", park-land tract 221, Samuel Morris, or park-land tract 132a, John Henry Shifflett. Overgrown. Five or more burials. Latest: Josie Shifflett, 1945, age 48. NPS

HENSLEY/SHIFFLETT/POWELL: Sometimes called Turner Shifflett or Hill Shifflett (for Turner's son, Hilary). On west side of Roundtop Mountain, quite far down, about 200 ft. short of (behind) old house site, on park-land tract 47a, Soloman J. Hensley. Cemetery 50 by 50 ft., overgrown. Fifty or more burials. Native stone markers, and a marble headstone for Angus J. Shifflett. Or find from Powell Gap, starting northward on the Appalachian Trail, then following old wagon road that diverges, about 1 mi. to house site. Inscriptions as far back as 1850. Honorias Powell, who owned a thousand acres nearby (and for whom gap probably named) was buried here, according to Billie Jo Monger. Turner Shifflett was a grandson of Powell. NPS, JCR, LB, EDL. (ed. note: Turner Shiflet m. Milly Powell, d/o Honorius and Mary Beasley Powell, and grandaughter of John and Ann Powell of Culpeper Co. See Powell Chart. No evidence has yet been found to support Turner having a Powell in his lineage.)

GEORGE SHIFFLETT: High in Beldor Hollow on south side of old Simmons road near lower park gate, on park-land tract 182, George Minor Shifflett. Overgrown, old wire fence 12 by 40 ft. Ten or more burials, with metal and slate markers. NPS

HAM SHIFFLETT: On small knoll north of state route 628, which becomes park fire road, near lower gate northwest of Simmons Gap, on park-land tract 178, Ambrose W. Shifflett. Now forest. Four or more burials. NPS, JCR
