The George Foss Collection

  Technical Notes

About the Image files
The photos were taken in the 1950's and '60 with a regular camera. Most were 3 x 3 inch black and white photos. They were lightened for web use.

These pages have been designed to be used with resolutions as low as 640 x 480 in Windows. The images will look much better if you set your number of color settings to either thousands on a Mac, OR 16 bit on a Windows computer.

About the Audio files
The audio files come from reel to reel tapes that were made on a portable tape machine in the 1950's and '60's by George Foss. They were transferred to cassette tape, converted to wav files, then compressed with some great Quicktime technology into .mov files. The largest audio file was a 47 meg wav file; after Quicktime it was 1 meg, with extremely little loss of quality.

In order to hear the audio files, you must have one of the later versions of the Quicktime browser plug-in. This free plug-in can be found at: http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download.
Scroll down that page until you come to the box in the left column labeled "Download the free player." Fill out the form and follow the directions. If the audio sounds choppy, change the settings to 8 bit mono.
