A Lost Album
Looking for it's home

Photos & info submitted by Wendy Mathias

I was going through some old stuff today and ran across an OLD photo album that I got when Barry and I first married. I can't remember if it was left in the apartment we rented in Harrisonburg, VA, or if it was in a drawer of an antique we bought. I decided to pull out the photos to see if there were any "familiar names" on the back. Some photos have clues since some were printed on postcards and mailed to Mrs. R. L. Shiflett, sometimes referred to as "Aunt Willie," of Elkton, VA. Some photos have names written on the frames, but I think the photos have been moved around or have fallen out because sometimes the names and number of people don't match up. But I'm going to send you the ones that I can reasonably identify. Maybe these are names you "know." Maybe family members will step forward and claim this album. There are some photos taken at the Henry Lyman Community House -- does that ring a bell with anyone? I don't know which county that is in.

I think I found a clue, Mrs. R. L. Shiflett "Aunt Willie" must be the couple on the Edward chart: Edward Shiflett Family of Orange Co., VA: Rolley Larney Shifflett, b. December 01, 1870; d. Unknown; m. Willie A. Mowbray, April 08, 1896. d/o Zachariah & Jane Mowbray.

These photos are loaded with people named "Mowbray" -- interesting point is the alternate spelling of Mowbray as Mouberry because that is exactly how people in the valley pronounce it. Also there is an Ashby Shiflett on this chart. He married Addie Herring; the photo of Ashby Shiflett is with Will Herring -- maybe his best friend/brother-in-law? Of course, there were several Ashby's, so this isn't necessarily the same one but. . .

Arthur and Bernard Arthur and Bernard -- Arthur Shiflett and Bernard McDonald -- this is a post card sent by Arthur to Mrs. Willie Shifflett. Most of the photo post cards are cut up to fit into the album, so I can read only part of the back -- it appears to say, "Dear Willie I will give you one of Bernard and myself for you to remember us . - - - ever Arthur Shifflett"

There are several pictures of the children growing up.

Mandy Mandy Shiflett is in several photos. In another
she is with Melvin Willis (I think they were married).
Another shows her with Melvin and a baby, Edward Lee.

Martin Shiflett -- his face was in an apple design.
Could he have been a school teacher?

Herring and Shiflett Will Herring and Ashby Shiflett.  Names listed on a post
card addressed to Mrs. R. L. Shiflett (Aunt Willie).

There are several of these "youngsters" having fun at the Lyman Community House. I'll send just this one for now. In another one, they're dancing and playing music. Another one shows a guy pretending he's going to hit someone. Lyman Community House
