Honored At Family Reunion
Mr. and Mrs. William B. Shifflette, 1000 Oak Street, pioneer settlers of West Texas who recently held a family reunion, the first gathering of all their children in 12 years, are shown above. Moving from Dawson County in 1930, Mr. and Mrs. Shifflette chose Sweetwater for their residence and have lived at their Oak Street home since that time. Before moving here Mr. Shifflette was engaged in agriculture and stock raising and owns sections of West Texas lands.
Children attending the reunion and remaining several days for a visit were Mrs. Wade Bartlett, Mr. Bartlett and daughter, LaNelle, of Lamesa; Mrs. J. C. Moore, Mr. Moore, and daughter Wanda and son Harley of Ackerly; Mrs. Jim Wade and Mr. Wade of Harlingen; Verna Shifflette, Mrs. Shifflette and Daughter Loriene, of Silver City; Mrs. Zella Perry and children, Clarice, Arthur Lee, J. W. and Jack. One son, Leon died April 18, 1922 in New Mexico.

WILLIAM BURNETT SHIFFLETTE
W. B. Shifflette, 75, Well Known Rancher, Buried In Sweetwater; Death Comes At Loving, N. M. Death has taken another from the ranks of pioneers of this section, a rancher who came here in 1899 and resided in this ranch section for more than a score of years. He was W. B. Shifflette, 75, buried Wednesday at Sweetwater, following a sudden death while visiting at Loving, N. M., in the home of his granddaughter, Mrs. Rosabelle Farrell. Mr. Shifflette was a native of West Virginia, born in Orange County, Dec. 9, 1858. He came to Texas as a boy, settling at Liberty Hill, in Williamson County, with his parents. He was married there, to Ms Belle Shiflett. The pioneer rancher came to Big Spring before the turn of the century, remaining in town until 1905, when be moved to his ranch north of Big Spring. He retired in 1920 and moved to Sweetwater, where he had since resided. Survivors, include his widow four daughters, Mrs. J. W. Wade of Harlington, Tex., Mrs. Joe Moore of Ackelry, Tex. Mrs. C. E. Perry of San Angelo, and Mrs. Wade Bartlett of Lamesa; one son, Verna Shifflette of Silver City. N. M., and 11 grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. All of the daughters were in Sweetwater to attend the funeral services. His son was unable
to attend the rites because of injuries received in an automobile accident en route, there. Some of the grandchildren were unable to attend on account of serious Illness.
William married Laura Belle Shiflett, daughter of Joel Winston Shiflett and Sally W. Henry Graves, in 1879. Laura was born in 1861 in TX, died in 1946 in TX at age 85, and was buried in Sweetwater Cemetery, Sweetwater, Nolan Co., TX.

Mr. Shifflette was killed Monday night in an automobile accident at Ratoon. N. M. Particulars of the accident have not been learned by the family, who were notified of his death late yesterday. He is a brother of Mrs. J. W. Wade, M. Wade Bartlette, and Mrs. J. C. Moore of Sweetwater. Besides the family living here. Mr. Shifflette is survived by a wife and son Burnett and daughter, Miss Anna Belle. Burnett was graduated at Dennis Business school here two years ago and Miss Anna Belle visited here with hr father last summer. Funeral arrangements wilt not he made until the arrival of the body from El Paso, Sweetwater Reporter. Deceased as well as his parents made their home in Big Spring many years and the many friends in this city deeply sympathize with the bereaved family.

ARTHUR C. WOODBURN
Arthur C. 'Ace' Woodburn, 88, died Friday (March 8) in EI Paso, where he had resided since 1998. He graduated from Texas Tech College (Texas Tech University) in 1933 and received his masterฎs from the University of New Mexico in 1940. He also studied electrical engineering and graduate studies in education at New Mexico College of A & M (New Mexico State University) and the University of Colorado. He was a member of Phi Kappa Phi, and Phi Delta Kappa. He began his 40-year career in New Mexico education with teaching/coaching positions in Rogers and Endee; then became elementary principal in Tatum. His high school principalships were in Santa Rosa, Hurley and Alamogordo. He served as assistant superintendent of curriculum and instruction in Alamogordo and then retired from education after serving six years as Superintendent of Schools in Gallup, McKinley County, Public Schools. During his career he was an active member of many education associations and served as president of NM Council for Improvement of Education, President of NM Association of Secondary School Principals, President of NM Schoolmasters, and President of New Mexico Education Association. He served in the United States Navy during Wor1d War II and remained in the Naval Reserve for many years. He was a deacon, deacon chairman, Sunday school teacher and superintendent, pastor search committee chairman, personnel committee chairman and on numerous other committees at First Baptist Churches in Alamogordo, Gallup, and Las Cruces. He served as Baptist Area Board Treasurer and on the Executive Board of the Baptist Convention of NM, and as Trustee of First Baptist Church, Las Cruces more than 20 years and as a member of the Board of Trustees of Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Kansas City, Mo. from 1983-1993 (Chairman of the Finance Committee from 1987-1993). He was a lifetime member and past president of the local chapter of Lions Club International. He served as chairman of the Las Cruces Committee on Aging for six years and as a volunteer income tax assistant for 11 years. He served on the local and state levels in the National Retired Teachers Association and the American Association of Retired Persons. He was preceded in death by his wife of 57 years, E. Floriene Shifflette Woodburn; his parents; and brothers Albert, and Horace Woodburn. He is survived by his daughter, Jenet Floriene Bowman and her husband, J. W. Bowman; grandchildren Janna Lynn Bowman and Jason W. Bowman; brother Alvin Woodburn and his wife Etta Woodburn; sisters Stella Davis and Jean Henderson; sisters-in-law Greta Woodburn and June Woodburn; and 12 nieces and nephews. Memorial contributions may be made to First Baptist Church, 106 S. Miranda, Las Cruces, NM 88005.
