I was working in Madison County, KY records today and coincidentally came across the following, which since these two were just under discussion, I thought I would share. This comes from the Court Order Book, date: Monday, April 5, 1841. "A certificate of Margaret Shiflet widow and relict of Joshua Shiflett dec'd relinquishing her right of administration on the estate of said dec'd was produced in court and proven by John Shiflet a witness thereto.
And on the motion of Eli Pearson letters of administration is granted him on the estate of Joshua Shiflet dec'd.
Whereupon the said Eli Pearson took a necessary oath as such and entered into and acknowledged a bond in the penalty of $2000. with James Burton and Overton Maupin his securities conditioned as this law directs.
And it is further ordered that Thomas Tharp, John Challis, Thomas W. Miller and Christopher Harris or any three of them who being first sworn to inventory and appraise the personal estate and slaves of said dec'd and make report to this court."
Joshua is an older brother to our Eliza Shiflett. I haven't spent any time on this collateral line, but have observed that Christopher Harris is later a judge in the very same Madison County Court Order Book and probably has some relationship to Margaret Shiflett, as I have seen Margaret Shifleyt's maiden name referenced as Margaret Harris Maupin and Joshua and Margaret's daughter Susan marries a William Harris Smith. Also I believe Thomas Tharp is probably some type of cousin to Joshua. Tharp/Thorpe are directly in our tree. Notice also that in the very same document the number of "T's" in Shiflet varies within the same sentence! Clearly spelling is still pretty fluid in the mid 1800s of Kentucky. Hope this helps some descendant of Joshua and Margaret.

She died 4 Apr 1904, Dearborn, Platte, Missouri. Joshua was a Blacksmith by trade. He also served in the 1st Kentucky Volunteers, Company E, Cavalry, in the Civil War.

ELIZA KENNARD SHIFFLETT
On Apr. 3, at about 5:30 p. m., Mrs. Elze Shifflett, who of .J Shifflett, departed this life after an illness of only a few hours. Sister Shifflett attended Sunday school and church on Sunday morning and when she returned home started to prepare dinner, when she was taken with a dizzy spell and became unconscious in which state she remained for about three and one-half hours, when she fell asleep to wake no more on earth Elze Shifflett (Kennard) was born at Mt. Sterling Ky., in 1833. At the age of 19 she united with the Christian church and ever lived a faithful, devoted Christian life. On July 6, 1865 she was united in marriage to J. Shifflett, who survives her. To this union was born one daughter, which died at the age of 5 years. A large audience assembled at the church to pay the last tribute of love to one who bad lead an exemplary life in their midst, and at whose departure all have lost a friend. The floral offerings and decorations were beautiful and carried with them-their silent tribute of love from many homes. The discourse was delivered by R. E. Callithan, after which the remains were laid to rest in the Masonic cemetery.

Drafted in MO in June 1941, put on a train, and shipped to Portland Air Base for basic training. Since he was 30, he was transferred to the reserves in November 1941. He fell in love with Oregon and stayed ....... for a month until Pearl Harbor. He flew 50 combat missions as a tail gunner on B-17s. Came home and married my Mom in St. Louis several days later. Packed up and moved to Portland. Died in Portland in 1988. Mom in 1991. I think of the both every day. They were the best.

VIRGINIA M. SHIFFLETT
A memorial service for Virginia M. Shifflett of Southwest Portland will be at 10 a.m. Thursday in Pegg, Paxson & Springer Chapel in Beaverton. Private interment will be in Willamette National Cemetery. She died of causes related to age Sunday in a Portland care center. Mrs. Shifflett was 80. She was born Sept. 18, 1911, in Hugo, Colo. She married John Shifflett in 1944 in St. Louis. The couple moved to the Portland area from Eugene in 1950. Mrs. Shifflett, a homemaker, lived in the Gresham area before moving to Portland earlier this year. Her husband died in 1988. Survivors include her son, John, and her daughter, Susan Luchs, both of Aloha; and a brother, Douglas Engelhardt of Honolulu. The family suggests that remembrances be contributions to the Oregon Division of the American Cancer Society.

David Francis Shifflett, of Louisville, died of cancer Monday, June 27, 2005. He was 86. The son of John Allen Shifflett and Myrtle Vestle, he was born July 23, 1918, in St. Joseph, Mo. He married Cora Rose Peterson on March 6, 1946, in Hays, Kan. Mr. Shifflett moved to Boulder in 1992 and to Louisville in 2000. He served in the U.S. Army Air Force from 1942 until 1946. He enjoyed gardening, fishing and woodworking. "He enjoyed being Santa Claus for three years at Balfour," his family said. Survivors include two daughters, Charlotte Nichols, of Fort Collins, and Sharon Schwartzkopf, of Boulder; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife. Contributions may be made in Mr. Shifflett's name to Saint Andrew's Presbyterian Church, 3700 Baseline Road, Boulder, CO 80303. Crist Mortuary handled arrangements.

HOWARD R. SHIFFLETT
November 19, 1927 - May 25, 2014 Howard was a bigger-than-life man, a teacher for over 50 years who inspired thousands of students with his knowledge and unbounded enthusiasm. Born in Portland, Oregon, he was the son of Richard Shifflett, shoemaker, toy maker, inventor, and Minnie, a homemaker and German immigrant. After high school he turned down an opportunity to play professional baseball and chose instead to join the army. When discharged he went to college under the GI Bill. He received a bachelor's degree in teaching at Central Missouri State University. Later he earned master's degrees from Cal State University Long Beach and University of Utah, and a PhD in geomorphology from Washington University in St. Louis. He taught at all school levels, teaching in junior high and high school before joining the staff at Long Beach City College (LBCC). In addition to his full-time duties at LBCC, he also taught classes and was a graduate student advisor at Cal State University Long Beach, and led science instruction workshops for secondary school teachers. He was honored at the First Annual Outstanding Colleague Awards at LBCC for his scholarship in the field of geology, his long and inspired teaching career, and his leadership as department chair of the physical sciences for over 25 years. Howard published several peer-reviewed papers on seismology including his work in the Mecca Hills. He was especially proud of his contributions to the LBCC Summer Honors Program where his National Foundation Grant funded classes introduced gifted high school students to the field of geology. After retiring from teaching, Howard became a tour guide for a local travel agency. His tours were always quick to fill up as his reputation grew as a knowledgeable speaker who made geology accessible and interesting. With his wife Joan, Howard was an avid traveler. He visited exotic places like the Galapagos Islands, Machu Picchu, and the Serengeti, including every continent except Australia. He even toured geological sites in Kamchatka in decrepit Soviet-era military helicopters. He sailed on the Nile, the Yangtze, the Neva, and of course the Mississippi River. Howard always loved sports. He played baseball and basketball in high school and later in life played tennis almost every day well into his eighties. He loved the Dodgers and Kings and never wanted to miss a game. Howard died peacefully at home in Huntington Beach, CA surrounded by family after a short illness. He is survived by Joan, his wife of fifty years, his brother Roy, children Guy, Jeff, Mark, Karen, and Alec, and granddaughters Marly and Katie. He will be missed by all who knew him. LeROY - Helen L. Shifflett, 81, of LeRoy passed away at 2:20 a.m. Sunday (Feb. 1, 2004) at Jackson Heights Nursing Home, Farmer City. Her funeral will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Calvert-Belangee-Bruce Funeral Home, LeRoy, the Rev. Tim Vollstedt will officiate. Burial will be in Oak Grove Cemetery, LeRoy. Visitation will be for one hour before the service Thursday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to LeRoy Emergency Ambulance Service. She was born Dec. 22, 1922, in Hamilton, Ohio, a daughter of Esmer and Ellen Reese Reece. She married Lyle Shifflett on Sept. 16, 1942, in Hamilton. He passed away June 8, 1988. Survivors include two sons, Jack Reece of Kentucky; and Charles L. (Vicki) Shifflett, Morton Grove; one daughter, Janice M. (Dale) McCumsey, Farmer City; 10 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents. She was a member of the LeRoy Christian Church.

The Baby Fold began through the generosity of Nancy Mason, a churchwoman in Normal, who donated her residence to the Methodist Episcopal Deaconess Society in 1899. Mrs. Mason intended for her home to be used to house both active and retired deaconesses. Deaconesses were women who were trained as nurses, educators, evangelists, social workers, and administrators to perform mission work, both in the U.S. and abroad. Methodist Deaconesses operated the Bloomington Deaconess Hospital from 1897 to 1901. The Mason Deaconess Home for Aged was incorporated as a not-for profit institution of the State of Illinois on May 1, 1902.

hello, I'm new to the lists, I am the great great great Grandaughter of Mildred Jane Shifflet and Joshua Ruble My Grandmother who I never got to know was Velma Lucyle Foote and her mother was Hattie Mae Ruble/ Shifflet. Everyone on my fathers side of the family has passed away, my father was Raymond Lee Maloney his sister Carla both deceased, I know she married into a Gibson Family and that there were children there. I know I have relatives I just don't know where. Since I am a decendant from Thomas Shifflet and Elizabeth Lamb I suppose I have quite a few relatives. Velma died when she was only about 33 and since it was 1943 i'm guessing my grandfather was in the war. She placed my father and his sister in the Soldiers and Sailors Orphanage in Bloomington illinois. My father joined the Marines and lied about his age when he was only 17 and went to Korea. he died just last 1999 in Florida but was buried in Atlanta Cemetery illinois, he was a Mason, and his nickname was "Scotty". I know I'm related to the Footes but I knew nothing about the Shifflets or Rubles until just lately when i finally got a match out of Velma Foote to show some names. I am still trying to find out who my fathers fathers parents were and his name was Raymond BAsil Maloney. All I know is that he was born in Indiana in 1901 and apparently was quite a drifter it seems. i know that my father reunited with his father finally sometimes around 1967 right before my grandfather died. He is buried in Fullerton off of BAstunchury Road, his gravestone is military and says nothing of his parents either. There are a few sprinklings of familier names but not many around him. It's terribly frustrating not knowing who my great great grandparents were that came over from Ireland, so if anyone reads this that may remember my family with the Shiffletts that may have some information I'd be more than grateful to learn or know anything about my heritage and this includes the Shifflets. I am noting daughters of the American REvolution and it looks to me as though all my ancestors were involved somehow i'd like to know more about this too, this would include the Footes, Rubles and Shifflets. I remember the closest to me were Don and Betty Foote but I lost track of them years ago and have no idea where their children are? these would be cousins. I have combed over the site several times to no avail only to find Velma and Raymond were indeed married but there is no other information regarding my family backround, for all I know I could be looking right at my ancestors yet not know them, I see many Shifflets have a small small chin and I definately inherited that and braces!! lol. So how does this work? I'm curious do the females of the family carry on the Shifflet name even if they remarried? I see a lot of that so what? that would make me ..... Lorraine Rae Maloney/Shifflet ???? or what? I'm seriously interested in knowing how this works. 'I feel a bit like an orphan myself since my father didin't have much family to talk about being that he was an orphan. I know he mentioned names of people like Oscar and LeRoy and those were Velmas Brothers so someone must have been around that he knew he just forgot to share it with his family, my parents divorced when I was only 7 so I didn't get much information from him. I have one family treasure that I'd be happy to share with anyone that's interested, I have a picture of J. Martin Foote and Hattie Mae Ruble/Shifflet from December of 1955. Anyone wanting a copy may write me at the below E mail. and any information anyone can share would be greatly appreciated. By the way; when my parents divorced my Dad moved back to Bloomington Illinois and bought the Old Hickory Tavern and ran it with his second wife Dorthy "Dottie" for many years, he was close friends with many of you I'm sure from that area, including the actor McClean STevenson from the show Mash. I know he was really happy being back where he grew up. Even though I only got to see him three times from the time I was seven, he had given me a great childhood and was a terrific father, I was extremely sad at his death in 1999, I came down with a very odd case of severe double pnumonia and had to have emergency lung surgery on Christmas Eve, my mother placed a call to my father at that time and it was the first time they had spoken to one another since 1962 and she told him I was in surgery and she wanted him to know I may not make it. His reply was "I am awful sick too", he too had severe pnumonia. On January 11th after a long hard struggle and recovery I was finally released from a Fullerton Hospital at approximately 11:20am, at 2:30 (11:30am) am my father passed away at his home in Florida. I am convinced he waited until he was sure I was out of danger. My mother was always convinced that I came into this world with my father, she saw me with him before I was born and asked him who the kid was, my father looked at her like she was crazy, but after I was born they realized she had somehow seen me a bit early, just one of those weird family stories. My mother was convinced when I was ill that I was going out with him, I assured her that was not the case. My father and I were just very very close even though we were miles apart. I will always remember him fondly.

She was born June 25, 1904, in Jamestown, Russell Co., Kentucky, a daughter of Jesse Cleveland and Juliza Isabelle Bernard Ford. She married Irvin Ruble. He died in 1932. She married Thomas Brannan. He died in 1960. Survivors include a son, Jonah Ruble; a daughter, Ruth Woodward, a sister, Ruth Harris, 22 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren and several great-great-grandchildren.
