KNOW all men by these presents, that we Garland Shifflet and Matthew Self are held and firmly bound unto His Excellency James P. Preston Esquire, Governor of Virginia, and his Successors, for the use of the Commonwealth, in the sum of One Hundred and Fifty Dollars, to which payment well and truly to be made, we bind ourselves, our heirs, executors and administrators jointly and severally, firmly by these presents. Sealed and dated this 12th day of August 1819 in the 44th year of the Commonwealth.

The Condition of the above obligation is such, that whereas a marriage is shortly intended to be solemnized between the above bound Garland Shifflet and Peachy Self Daughter of John Self of Rockingham County if therefore, there shall be no lawful cause to obstruct the said marriage, then the above obligation to be void: otherwise, to remain in full force and virtue.

NELSON SHIFFLET was born July 23, 1823, in Rockingham Cy, Va. is the son of Garland & Peacha Shifflet. The father was born in Rockingham Cy, Va., in 1799 (corrected to 1798) and died in this county in 1863. The mother was born in Rockingham Co, Va. in 1808 (corrected to 1802) and died in this county. They were the parents of 12 children. The subject of this sketch was raised on a farm in his native State until he came to this county with his parents at the age of nineteen and settled on the farm at present owned by James Wilson of Dover Township. Subsequently, the family moved southeast of Princeton where the father died. On May 27, 1850, Mr. Shifflet married Mary R. Hunt, the daughter of Abel & Mary Hunt, formerly from Massachusetts. Mrs. Shifflet died February 18, 1865. In 1851, Mr. Shifflet moved to Ohio Township and settled on his present farm of 160 acres. Of the above marriage is a family of seven children, four of whom are living, namely William M. b June 6, 1851, now living at Malcom, Ia; Albert F. b February 15, 1853 (now living in Malcom, Ia), Ida P. (now Mrs. A. L. Jones) Van Orin, Il. b March 26, 1856; Harry E. b October 6, 1864; Hannah R. died in 1866 age six years; Clementine died in infancy. On July 9, 1865, Mr Shifflet was married to Eliza Ogden, daughter of Samuel & Tamar Ogden. The father was from Virginia, the mother from Pennsylvania. The father died February 27, 1843. The mother is still living and is past eighty. Of this last marriage, there was a family of two children. The first died in infancy. Hattie T. was born March 6, 1870. Mr. Shifflet was formerly a Whig and is now a Republican. Owns 160 acres in Ohio Township and 185 acres, all improved, in Powesheik County, Ia. Mrs. Shifflet's grandfather, Samuel Ogden, was a soldier in the Revolutionary war. Her grandfather on the mother's side, Francis Johnston, was in the war of 1812. Mr. Shifflet's grandfather, John Self, was a soldier of the Revolution and also of the war of 1812. Mr. Shifflet's parentage on the father's side is French, and his grandfather Richard Shifflet, was a soldier in the French & English war, while his uncle on the mother's side-John Self-was in the war of 1812.

In interpreting the last two sentences above, Nelson is the Mr. Shifflet referred to. The John Self that was a soldier in the Revolution & also the war of 1812 was Peachy"s father, and Nelson's uncle John Self that served in the war of 1812 and married Nancy Ary in Jan 1824 in Ohio, was Peachy's brother. However, we believe that Richard was Garland's grandfather and Nelson's great grandfather.
