Comment from Barbara: Joe's untimely death [in 1998] brought home to me the realization that we cannot rely on our tomorrows to complete tasks that are important to us. He is the reason I decided to tackle this project that I began originally in 1980. Frustrated by the distance from Virginia and the many Shiflett names I encountered on my one visit to Staunton, VA , I gave up and put aside my research for almost 20 years. I chanced upon your website in 1998 and attended the reunion in Harrisonburg that summer. I purchased a copy of Larry's book and there was some daylight. Donna Scott and Norm Addington provided me with much help, too. I compiled my information from their family Bible, birth certificates, obituary notices, death certificates and the Social Security Death Index.

Burnice was hit by a car when he was on his way home from delivering and sharing lunch with his father at the roofing factory where Anfield was employed at that time. When local veterans organized AMVETS Post 120 in Franklin in 1990, they decided to honor Dad and it is the "Thomas Shiflett Memorial AMVETS Post 120". Incidentally, when they had commemorative coffee mugs made, they mis-spelled his last name. Imagine that!
