VADA BLAINE SHIFFLETT

"BROADWAY - Vada B. Shifflett, 79, of 217 S. Main St., died on Tuesday (Nov. 14, 1995) at her residence. She was born on January 29, 1916, at Broadway, a daughter of Roy F. and Annie P. Blaine. She was retired from Broadway Drug Store. She was a member of Linville Creek Church of the Brethren and was treasurer of her Sunday school class. On Dec. 19, 1938, she was married to Harry William Shifflett who died July 14, 1995. Surviving are a daughter, Phyllis J. Foltz of Penn Laird; a son, Delaney E. Blaine of Mount Crawford; two brothers, Lawrence W. Blaine of Bergton and Lemuel C. Blaine of Staunton; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. A service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday at Linville Creek Church of the Brethren by the Rev. Paul Roth, with burial at the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1 until 5 p.m. at the residence and from 7 until 8 p.m. Thursday at Lindsey Harrisonburg Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to Broadway Rescue Squad.

FISHERSVILLE-Vallie Esterline Shiflett, 95, a resident of the District Home, Waynesboro, died Sunday (Dec. 20, 1998) at Augusta Medical Center. She was born August 19, 1903 in Randolph County, W. Va., a daughter of Otha Lee and Ellen (Markley) Herron. Mrs. Shiflett was a member of Waynesboro Mennonite Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lorenzo Dow Shiflett, four sons, Edgar, Calvin, Lawrence and Price Shiflett; three daughters, Ruby Landrum, Ruth Garrett and Rachel Shiflett; three stepsons, Walter, Lawrence and Alton Shiflett; two brothers, Russell and Elza Herron; six sisters, Florence Tenney, Alta Croger, Lora Currence, Martha Herron, Nellie Wagman and Elva Barkley. Surviving are three sisters, Blanche Chamberlaing, Bertha Currence and Stella Croger, all of Elkins, W. Va.; seven grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and great-great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. A service will be held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday in the Waynesboro Chapel of Reynolds Funeral Service with the Revs. Charles Ramsey and Stanlee Kauffman presiding. Burial will be in Riverview Cemetery. Pallbearers will be family attending the service. The family will receive friends from 7-8 p.m. on today at the funeral home.

Valora Shiflet, 93, longtime Abilene resident, passed away on Wednesday, November 9, 2005. Her funeral service will be held at 2:00 PM on Monday, November 14 at the Elmwood Funeral Home Chapel, 5750 HWY 277 South with her nephew, Ross Hollingsworth Jr. officiating. Entombment will follow in Elmwood Memorial Park. Visitation will be from 2 to 4 PM on Sunday at the funeral home. Mrs. Shiflet was born on October 28, 1912 in Denison where she spent her childhood, received her education and married Charles O. Shiflet on March 2, 1929. She has lived in San Antonio, New Orleans, and Evanston, Wyoming where she was co-owner and operator of Wyoming Railway Car Shop for ten years. She was a past member of the Abilene Women's Club, a member of 11th & Willis Church of Christ, Abilene Garden Club, and several civic organizations including certification in the National Security Seminar. Her parents, Joe Thompson and Hattie Grossman Thompson and her husband preceded her in death. Survivors include one son, Donald J. Shiflet of Abilene; two grandsons, John Charles Shiflet of St. Joseph, Missouri, and David Oliver Shiflet of Naharia, Israel; a special granddaughter- in-law, Rachal Cohen of Abilene and numerous great grand- children. Velva Arnott (Peaches) Shifflett, 73, of Fishersville, died on Saturday, May 1, 2010, at Augusta Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Fishersville. She was born on August 19, 1936, in Greenville, West Virginia, to the late Lee and Lucille Arnott. Velva was retired from Con Agra in Crozet after than more than 25 years of service. The family would like to express their heartfelt appreciation to the wonderful, caring and skilled staff of Unit 2 at Augusta Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Fishersville, Virginia. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, John "Jack" Shifflett. She is survived by her two sons, Kenny Shifflett and special daughter-in-law, Donna, of Stuarts Draft and Steve Shifflett of Waynesboro; her two grandsons, Chris and Jason Shifflett; and her sister, Carolyn Maupin and husband, Joe, of Free Union. ELKTON - Velma Norine Bailey, 59, of Waldorf, Md., and formerly of Elkton died Saturday at Southern Maryland Hospital in Waldorf. The cause of death was not available Sunday night. Mrs. Bailey was born Nov. 4, 1923, in Elkton and was a daughter of Blanche Haney Shifflett of Rt. 3, Elkton and the late Jess C. Shifflett. Surviving are two daughters, Sandra L. Cockrell of Oxen Hill, Md, and Carol Ann Gale of Hillcrest, Md.; two sisters, Lena Reganus of Baltimore and Marie Morris of Staunton; three brothers, Bertrom W. and Willard J. Shifflett, both of Elkton, and Oliver R. Shifflett of Harrisonburg; and two grandchildren. The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Brill Funeral Home in Elkton by the Rev. Johnny Hensley. Velma S. Lawson, 74, of Charlottesville died Friday, Aug. 31, 1990 at her residence. Born May 1, 1916 in Greene County, she was the daughter of the late William Smith and Lou Mittie Morris Shifflett. Mrs. Lawson was retired from Acme Visible Records. She attended the Covenant Church of god and was a graduate of Blue Ridge School, where she served on the alumni committee. She was also a member of the Senior Center. Survivors include two daughters, Glenda Lawson Morris of Charlottesville and Patricia Lawson Morris of Crozet; a son Ellis Hugh Lawson of Westminster, Md., two sisters, Lera Violet Monger and Sara Katherine Morris; four grandchildren, Brian Ellis Lawson, Katherine Lura Lawson, Lee Morris and Lori Ann Morris; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her brothers and sisters, Clara Amelia Sandridge, Eunice Smith Shifflett, Alma Avis Morris, Cora Margaret Shifflett, Amos Jackson Shifflett, George Edgar Shifflett and William Edward Shifflett. A funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. today at Covenant Church of God with Pastor Harold Bare officiating. Interment will follow in Holy Memorial gardens. Velva S. Wood, 77, of Free Union, died Wednesday, Dec. 6, 2000, in a local hospital. She was born Oct. 8, 1923, in Boonesville, daughter of the late Wilford and Tishie Morris Shiflett. Mrs. Wood retired in 1985 from Acme Visible Records after 35 years of service. She was a member of Good Shepherd of the Hills Episcopal Church in Boonesville. She is survived by her husband, Broadus P. Wood and her sister, Mary S. Payne of Free Union. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at Good Shepherd of the Hills Episcopal Church, with pastoral leader Robert Thomas officiating. Interment will follow in Prize Hill Cemetery. Surviving are four daughters, Charo Shifflett, Ellen Shifflett, Kendria Shifflett and Kolicia Shifflett, Harrisonburg; four brothers, Chris Shifflett, Van Shifflett and Terry Shifflett, all of Harrisonburg, and Mark Shifflett, Olney, Md.; two sisters, Vernetta Roberts, Emporia, and Heidi Shifflett, Harrisonburg; and two grandchildren. ANDERSON - Mrs. Vera Shiflet Patterson, 89, of 313 W. Roosevelt Dr, Anderson SC, died Saturday, January 9 at Rainey Hospice House, Anderson. Born on October 15, 1920 in Hart County GA, she was the daughter of the late Jessie B. Shiflet and Flora Driver Shiflet. She was retired from Pope Drive Baptist Church, where she worked in the nursery for 17 years and was a member of the Cross Roads Baptist Church. Survivors include a daughter, Sylvia Gunter of Anderson; a son, Harold Patterson of Anderson; eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren also survive. She was preceded in death by her husband, James A. Patterson; a son, James A. Patterson Jr.; a brother, Oscar Shiflet and two nephews, Jimmy and Edsel Shiflet. Funeral services will be Tuesday, January 12 at 2:00 p.m. in the Chapel of the Strickland Funeral Home of Hartwell. Burial will be in the Cross Roads Baptist Church Cemetery. Mrs. Shifflette was born May 13, 1926 in Mendota, Illinois, a daughter of Edward and Laura Hoelzer Pohl. She was a graduate of Mendota High School and received her bachelors degree in criminal justice from Rollins College in Orlando, FL. Mrs. Shifflette worked as an astrologer. She leaves her four sons, Carl (Donna) Shifflette of Arlington, TX, Warren (Linda) Shifflette of Vancouver, WA, John (Robbin) Shifflette of Melbourne, FL, and Wesley (Leigh) Shifflette of Casa Grande, AZ; her daughter, Jacki (Mike) Allen of Georgetown, TX; sister, Shirley (Mark) Baccus of Melbourne Beach, FL; sister-in-law Theodora Pohl of Compton, Ill; 12 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. She was a native of Albemarle county and was 62 years of age. Besides Mrs. Johnson, she is survived by two other daughters, Mrs. Beulah Morris of Free Union, and Mrs. Ellie Sullivan of Baltimore, two sons, Lewis E. Morris, of this city and Roland Morris of Stanardsville. Mrs. Morris also leaves two brothers, Kenny and Eugene Morris, both of this city and five sisters, Mrs. Minnie Meadows, of -------- Mrs. Lora Garrison of Mount Crawford, Mrs. Bertha Shifflett, Mrs. Lillian Shifflett, both of this city, and Mrs. Maggie Shifflett of Baltimore. Morris of Mission Home; eight daughters, Thelma Shourt of Kingston, Md., Linnie Shifflett of Dundalk, Md., Lula Garrison of Baltimore, Md., Lucille Morris and Iller Morris, both of Dyke, Corina Garrison of Crozet and Muriel Simpson of Waynesboro, and Edith Morris of Earlysville; a sister, Fannie Sullivan of Vienna; 47 grandchildren and one great grandchild. Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Evergreen Church of the Brethren. Interment will be in Wyatt's Mountain Cemetery, the Rev. C.C. Kurtz will officiate. Verle was a retired truck driver for Leiter Trucking Company of Norwalk, Ohio. He enjoyed bowling and spending time with his family. Mr. Shiflet is survived by his daughters, Connie Putnam and Annie Moran; 13 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Verl Dallas Shiflet, Sr. and Stella Florence Shiflet (nee Rader); daughter, Debbie Slone; brother, Dale Shiflet; and sister, Midge Darnell. Mrs. Shiflett was preceded in death by two brothers and two sisters. Survivors include a son, Jerry Lee Furr of Waynesboro and a sister, Ruby Clark of Richmond. Vernie Beatrice Conley, 92, Camelot Health and Rehabilitation Center, Harrisonburg, and formerly of Route 1, Fulks Run, died March 29, 1995, at the center, where she had been a patient for two years. Mrs. Conley was born July 26, 1902, in Rockingham County and was a daughter of the late John Austin and Mollie Crawford Shifflett. She spent her entire life in the Fulks Run community. She was a homemaker and a member of Gospel Hill Mennonite Church. Her husband, Charles Conley, died in 1961. Surviving are two daughters, Ethel B. Conley, Broadway, and Hazel Lacks, Richmond; one son, Leonard Conley, Fredericksburg; two sisters, Hattie Stoutamyer, Mount Solon, and Viola Flagg, Akron, Ohio; one brother, Floyd Shifflett, Brandywine, W.Va.; nine grandchildren, including James Conley, Timberville, Herman J. Conley, Harrisonburg, Bobby Conley, Fredericksburg, and Susie Reynolds, Broadway, who were raised in the Conley home; 14 great-grandchildren; and 13 great-great-grandchildren. The Rev. Mrs. Oscar Solomon Shifflett died suddenly at her home in Stanardsville Sunday, November 27,. She was 58 years of age. The former Vernie V. Roach, she was the daughter of the late Valentine T. & Minerva Roach. She leaves her husband, Oscar Shifflett; three sons, Tallie Shifflett of Stanardsville, Earl Shifflett of Geer, and Talmadge Shifflett of Akron, Ohio; one brother Tallie Roach of Stanardsville, three sisters; Mrs. Mary Roach, Mrs. Mrs. Ethel Beasley, and Mrs. Virgie Morris, all of Geer and five grandchildren. Funeral services were held Wednesday at two o’clock in the High Top Pentecostal Church with interment in the church cemetery.

Mrs. Vernie Sissie Shifflett, 90, of Louisa died Tuesday, April 20, 1993, in Louisa Health Care center.  She was born May 10, 1902, in Greene County; daughter of the late George Shifflett and Rebecca Morris Shifflett.  She was the wife of the late Charles Howard Shifflett.  She is survived by three sons, John Otis Shifflett Sr. of Louisa, Charles Willard Shifflett of Cleara, Ala. and Ollie Phillip Shifflett of Wytheville; two daughters, Margaret Darlene Clark of Louisa and Mary Lee Murphy of Davidsonville, Md.; 19 grandchildren, 38 great-grandchildren and 17 great-great-grandchildren.  Mrs. Shifflett was preceded in death by one son, James Harold Shifflett.  Funeral services will be held at 11 A.M. Friday in Preddy Funeral Home Chapel, Orange, with the Rev. Jim Wood and the Rev. Ray Riggin officiating.  Interment will follow at 2 P.M. in National Memorial Park in Falls Church.  The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 P.M. today at Preddy Funeral Home of Orange.

YORK -- Vernon Shifflett Jr., 60, of York, died at 6:30 a.m. Saturday at York Hospital. He was the husband of Anita E. (Notholt) Shifflett. The service will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Workinger-Semmel Funeral Home Inc., 849 E. Market St., York. Burial will be in Susquehanna Memorial Gardens, with military rites by York County Veterans Honor Guard. Viewings will be 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday and 10 to 11 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Mr. Shifflett was born Sept. 16, 1936, in York. He was the son of the late Vernon and Ruth Shifflett. He was a press operator foreman for Foxx Pools in Emigsville for 23 years, a graduate of William Penn Senior High School and a U.S. Navy veteran. Mr. Shifflett also is survived by two sons, Larry Shifflett and Wayne Shifflett, both of York; two daughters, Linda Shue and Lisa Shifflett, both of York; six grandchildren; two brothers, Richard Shifflett of Thomasville and Gary Shifflett of Stewartstown; and a half sister, Verna Lee Seighman of New York. Vernon C. (Bootsie) Shifflett, 45, of 1023 St. Charles Avenue, died in a local hospital Wednesday.  Born in Albemarle County on January 21, 1935, he was the son of David and Elsie Bennett Shifflett of Boonesville.  He was owner and operator of Barrack Road market and an associate member of the Fraternal Order of Police, Charlottesville Moose Lodge and the Elks Lodge of Charlottesville.  Surviving are his widow, Freita Clatterbuck Shifflett; a daughter, Lisa Shifflett and one son, Rory Shifflett all of Charlottesville; four sisters, Vernell Birckhead of Crozet, Shirley Davis, Lucille Clairmont and Violet Talley all of Charlottesville; two brothers, David Shifflett Jr. and Eddie R. Shifflett both of Charlottesville. Funeral will be 2 p.m. Friday at Mt. View Baptist Church. The Rev. Daniel Lowe will officiate.  Burial in Holly Memorial Gardens.  The family will be at Joseph W. Vernon Clark Sullivan, 86, of Crozet, died Saturday, Feb. 26, 2000, at the University of Virginia Medical Center.  He was a loving father, grandfather and great-great-grandfather.  He was born on Nov. 7, 1913, in Greene County, to the late Eddie and Angie Shifflett Sullivan.  He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Lucille Jarrell Sullivan of Crozet; and two daughters, Carolyn Sullivan Strickler of Crozet, and Joanne and her husband, Thomas Anderson, of Chesterfield; five grandchildren, Joseph D. Strickler, Kimberly R. Strickler, and Randy Herring all of Charlottesville, Christine and her husband Paul Butts and Chad Anderson of Richmond; and four great-grandchildren, Sydney Sewell, Jordan and Nicholas Butts and Chase Anderson.  He was preceded in death by two daughters, Frances Arlene Sullivan and Beverly Anne Sullivan; three brothers Weldon Sullivan, Harold Sullivan and Earl Sullivan; and a sister, Laura Sullivan Bergland.  He was an honorary member of the Crozet Fire Department and was retired from Acme Visible Records of Crozet.  The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 P.M. this evening at the Anderson Funeral Home Chapel in Crozet.  Funeral services will be held at 2 P.M. Tuesday at the Crozet Baptist Church, with the Rev. Vernon G. Shifflet, 82, of Masontown, died Tuesday, April 10, 2001, at Morgantown Manor Nursing and Rehab in Morgantown. He was born Oct. 5, 1918, in Virginia, son of the late Grover Cleveland and Clemmie Morris Shifflet. He was a retired carpenter. He served in the U.S. Army. He is survived by two sons and a spouse, William "Sonny" and Doris Shifflet, of Masontown, and Larry Shifflet, of Glen Burnie, Md.; three daughters and a spouse, Mary Ann and Alan "Buck" Taylor, of Masontown, Carroll Bactat, of Virginia, and Sandra Sterlings, of Baltimore; a sister, Doris Guildwell, of Romney; 15 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Mary Katherine Collier Shifflet; five sisters; and three brothers. Funeral service for Vernon Harshbarger Shifflett, 79, East Rockingham Street, Elkton, will be conducted 2 PM Saturday afternoon from the Elkton United Methodist Church by the Rev. David T. Reynolds. Burial will follow in East Lawn Memorial Gardens at Harrisonburg with military rites conducted by the VFW. Mr. Shifflett died Wednesday evening, June 10, 1998, from an apparent heart attack. He was born September 3, 1918, at McGaheysville, and was the son of the late David Luther Shifflett and Gracie Thomasine Powell Shifflett. He was a member of the Elkton United Methodist Church and retired from Merck as a chemical operator with 41 years of service. Mr. Shifflett was drafted in 1943 and sent to Germany; fought overseas for 19 months with the 143rd regiment, 36th fighting division of the Texas National Guard. While serving his country at that time, he was a platoon sergeant and squad leader of the 1st battalion rifle company. He was a member of the Gooden Brothers VFW Post 9292 at Elkton. He was past post commander and district commander of the VFW and was instrumental in the building of the first VFW Hall in Elkton. Mr. Shifflett was active with the Voice of Democracy and formed the Youth League Summer Baseball at Elkton. He was on the Board of Directors for the Valley program for the Aging and had held several offices with the local Democratic party. On December 27, 1939, he married Clara Ogretta Higgs, who died July 29, 1965, and on March 21, 1971, he married Doris Fries Lilly Shifflett, who survives. Also surviving are three sons, Douglas Wayne Shifflett of Grottoes; Gary Michael Shifflett and Dennis Paige Shifflett, both of Elkton; a daughter, Dinah Balderson of Farnham, VA.; three step sons, Frederick W. Lilly of Bridgewater; Michael G. Lilly and Steven W. Lilly, both of Elkton; two sisters, Anna Mae Ottaway of Birmingham, Alabama; Grace Pauline Graham of Joplin, Missouri; thirteen grandchildren and four great grandchildren. Besides his parents and first wife, he was preceded in death by five brothers and three sisters. The funeral for Vernon Jeremiah (Shep) Shifflett Sr., 49, who was stabbed to death at his home at 229 W, Water St., Harrisonburg Thursday, will be held 11 p.m. Monday at the Elkton Pentecostal Church. The funeral will be conducted by the Rev. Ennis Dean, and burial will be in Mt. Olivet Cemetery in McGaheysville. Mr. Shifflett was a brick mason and had served overseas with the Army during World War II. He has spent the majority of his life in the Harrisonburg and Penn Laird areas and was a member of Rion-Bowman Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 632. He was born in Rockingham County Dec. 11, 1924 and was a son of Mrs. Myrtie Michael Shifflett, now of Penn Laird, and the late Clarence Vernon Shifflett. Mr. Shifflett had been married twice. His first wife, the former Beulah Mae Charlton, died Aug. 9, 1970. On Aug, 4, 1971, he married the former Anita Kelly, who survives. In addition to his wife and mother, the family listed as survivors three daughters, Mrs. Brenda Kaye Hepler of Ft. Sam Houston, Tex., Mrs. Yvonne Lorraine Lee of Harrisonburg and Miss Betty Dawn Shifflett of Richmond; two sons, Vernon (Butch) Shifflett Jr., who is serving in the Army in Massachusetts, and Clarence Rubin Shifflett of Harrisonburg; two step-sons, Robert and Johnny Jennings, both of Harrisonburg; nine sisters, Mrs. Louise Morris of Grottoes, Mrs. Julia Beahm of Luray, Mrs. Betty Taylor, Mrs. Evelyn Herring and Mrs. Peggy May, all of Penn Laird, Mrs. Leoma Hensby of Sterling, Mrs. Lois Knott of Mt. Funeral services for Vernon Matthew Shifflett, 76, of Abilene, formerly of Lampasas, were Dec. 18, 2006, at Elliott-Hamil Funeral Home Chapel of Memories in Abilene with the Rev. Tom Long officiating. Burial followed at Elmwood Memorial Park. Mr. Shifflett died Dec. 16, 2006, at a hospital in Anson. He was born April 23, 1930, in Spur, to James Harvey and Martha Burns Shifflett. Mr. Shifflett was a self-employed welder and worked for Childs Ready Mix in Abilene for several years and Evergreen Feed Mill in Lampasas for 15 years. In 1989, Mr. Shifflett moved from Lampasas to Abilene, where he married Georgia Tarrants on Feb. 14, 1992. Mr. Shifflett was an avid motorcycle enthusiast and a member of the Abilene Road Riders Association. He also was a fisherman. He belonged to Grace United Methodist Church in Abilene. Survivors include his wife of Abilene; sons, Ronnie Shifflett, and wife, Debra, and Michael Shifflett, all of Abilene, David Shifflett, and wife, Norma, and Bobby Shifflett, all of Lampasas, and Greg Shifflett, and wife, Cheryl, of Burnet; daughters, Judy Cox, and husband, Brad, of Cleburne, and Nikki Thrasher, of Abilene; 12 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; a sister, Ruth (Toodie) Fowler, of Abilene; and several nieces and nephews. Shifflett, 49, a well known resident of this community and overseas veteran of World War I, died from a heart attack this morning, while shocking wheat on the Henry Carrier farm, on Humes Run, north of here. He had suffered from heart disease for some time. Shifflett was a son of the late E. C. and Eliza Shifflett. In world War I, he served with the 38th Infantry, Third Division, fighting in the historic battles of the Argonne, St. Mihiel and Meuse. Born in Lincoln County on July 21, 1908, she was the daughter of the late John David Lawton and Annie Lawton Lawton. She was retired from Hartwell Garment Company as a seamstress with 22 years of service. She was a member of the Hartwell First United Methodist Church, a Sunday school teacher and a member of the UMW and Sojourners. She was a member of the Eastern Star. Surviving are son, Marvin Shiflet of Hartwell; daughters, Kathryn Campbell of Jackson, and Ann Jancarek of Mount Juliet, Tenn.; 12 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and three great-great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Willie S. Shiflet; her second husband, John Floyd; sons, John T. Shiflet and William W. Shiflet; and sisters, Nellie Baxter and Effie Lawton. Services are 2 p.m. Saturday at Hartwell First United Methodist Church by the Revs. Jim Winn and R. Allen Stewart. Burial will follow in the Nancy Hart Memorial Park. Former Edgemere resident Veronica Bertha Shiflett of Kingsville, 81, died April 3 at Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center.  Born in Youngstown, Ohio, the former Veronica Zemantousky was raised in Jones Creek. She lived on Sparrows Point Road until 1990, when she moved to Kingsville.   Although she worked for Rheem Manufacturing Co. many years ago, she devoted most of her life to homemaking and motherhood.  Mrs. Shiflett loved hosting big family dinners and cookouts. She had also enjoyed spending summers in Crozet, Va., where she grew and canned vegetables and made fruit preserves.  Survivors are son William Cummins, daughters Christine Stange and Patricia Wooten, brother John Arbutus, sisters Ann Bottomstone and Genevieve Bottomstone, eight grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.  She was predeceased by husbands Leo Cummins and Elwood B. "Sonny" Shiflett, daughter Charlotte Cusick, brothers Joseph Zemantousky and Charles and Benjamin Arbutus and sister Katherine Drumm.  Services were conducted by the Rev. Earl Shifflett of Freedom Baptist Church on April 6 at Duda-Ruck Funeral Home. Interment followed at Oak Lawn Cemetery.

She was a member of the Evergreen Church of the Brethren at Dyke. She is survived by her husband, Floyd T. Shiflett of Earlysville; a son, Elvin Morris of Earlysville; two daughters, Mrs. Arlene Woodward of Charlottesville and Virginia Frate of Baltimore, Md.; a brother, Jesse Shiflett of Earlysville; two sisters, Mrs. Mamie Morris of Baltimore, Md., and Mrs. Vessie Shiflett of Germantown, Md.; 23 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. She is survived by her loving husband of 50 years, Leroy Shifflett; two daughters, Wanda DeVoss and her husband, Pete, and Corlette Byers and her husband, David; one son, Stuart Shifflett and Lisa; two sisters, Ruby Smith and Genevieve Charles; seven grandchildren, Allen, Chris and wife, Kelly, Nicky, Jennifer, Sam, Betsy and William; and one great-grandson, Christian; and a host of devoted nieces, nephews, other family members and friends. She was very devoted to her family and will be missed by all who knew her. Her remains rest at the Nelsen Funeral Home, 4650 S. Wenatchee -- Vicki French Shiflett Thornton, 71, of Wenatchee, passed away on Tuesday, October 10, 2006, following a short illness. She was born on March 11, 1935, to Homer and Ruth French in Wenatchee. The family moved to Chesaw, WA in 1942, where she continued her education, graduating from Molson High School in 1953. After graduation, she moved back to Wenatchee. In June of 1959, she married Virgil Shiflett and they had two daughters together. She went to work in the Wenatchee School District in the food service, and then worked for Stanley's for 7 years, and she retired from Bi-mart in April of 2005. In June of 1983, she married Robert Thornton in Wenatchee. Vicki loved to bake, she was a great seamstress and embroiderer, and she was known as "Mrs. Clean", but most important in her life, were her two grandchildren. She is survived by her two daughters, Teri (Brian) Robinson of Wenatchee and Tammie (Fred) Richardson of Depoe Bay, OR; two grandchildren, Tyler and Kaitlyn Robinson of Wenatchee; two sisters, Peggy (Bob) Mahoney of Wenatchee, and Dorothy Nyvall of Longview; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her two husbands; three brothers, Earl "Bud", Clifford and Homer French; three sisters, Vella Sites, Lucille Gloyn and Davene Turner; and nieces and nephews. Memorial Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 14, 2006, at Betts Memorial Chapel with Pastor John Sterk officiating. Born December 6, 1949 in Elbert County, she was the daughter of the late Estee Kellum and the late Nell Kellum. She was a graduate of Anderson University with honors receiving a Bachelor's Degree, she was past member and officer of the Hartwell Pilot Club, past member of the Chamber of Commerce, Credit Women International and she was a member of the Rotary Club of Hartwell. Ms. Shiflet was the retired Vice-President of Hart EMC and a member of the Sardis Baptist Church. She is survived by daughter, Brooke Shiflet of Hartwell, Ga.; brother, Don Kellum of Elberton, Ga.; and special friend, John Duke of Hartwell, Ga. She is preceded in death by her sisters, Carol Canales and Pat Jones. Shifflett of Charlottesville; and her son, Roger Dale Davis and his wife, Betty, of Charlottesville. A graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday afternoon at Bethany Baptist Church by Chaplain Katha Bollfrass. Visitation: 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at Forest Ridge Funeral Home in Hurst. Vickie was born in Abilene on Sept. 17, 1954, and graduated from Trinity High School in Euless. She was a secretary for Transport Workers Union in Euless. She loved vacationing at Goose Island State Park with her family. She was a fun-loving and kind-hearted person who took great pride in her children and grandchildren and will be sorely missed. Vicky Shifflett Hensley, 47, of Scottsville, was taken from us suddenly on Saturday, April 17, 2010, after battling a long illness. Born on May 30, 1962, in Charlottesville, she was a beloved wife, mother and "Nanu". She was preceded in death by her mother, Elizabeth Gentry; and three children, Kelly Renee Hensley, Tinia Marie Hensley, and Derrick Matthew Hensley. She leaves behind to cherish her memory, a husband of 33 years, Roy "Butch" Hensley Jr. of Scottsville; a daughter, Jessica Farmer and her husband, Michael, of Scottsville; a son, Anthony "Bubbie" Hensley of Abingdon; two grandchildren, whom she adored, Ellie and Jon Farmer of Scottsville; her father, Charles D. Mr. Shifflett died July 7, 1991, in a drowning accident. He was born March 18, 1967, in Richmond and was the son of Fred L. and Joanne Showalter Shifflett Jr. of Broadway. He was formerly employed as a roofer for Rick Layman. Victor ascended to eternal peace with the morning sun on Wednesday, July 14, 2010, at 5:34 a.m. surrounded by the love of family and friends. Victor was born on February 26, 1982, in Charlottesville, a son of Victor and Sandra Donour Shifflett. He was preceded in death by his grandfathers, Lloyd Ray Shifflett and Charles F. Donour. Victor was a devoted and loving husband, son, brother and uncle. He is survived by his wife, Jenny Graves Shifflett of Albemarle County; his parents, Victor and Sandra Shifflett; father-in-law, Jeff Graves and his wife, Missy of Louisa; mother-in-law, Fonda Graves and her fiance, Earl Paynter of Gordonsville; sister, Mandi Marchette and her husband, Reade and their son, Chase, of Ruckersville; brother, Trevor Shifflett and his girlfriend, Sara Dean, of Ruckersville; brother-in-law, Forrest Evan Graves of Albemarle County; grandmothers, Lola E. Roberts of Stanardsville and Patsy H. Donour of Ruckersville; uncles, Vincent R. Mrs. Martin Shiflett
Mrs. Martin Shiflett died Feb. 1, 1929, after an illness of three days, age 40 years. She had been a member of the Brethren church for more than 22 years, and was always a faithful worker. Although she became separated from her church she still retained her devotion to it in the community where she lived. She was much devoted to her home, her family, her parents, brothers, sisters and friends. She was indeed a loyal friend, a good mother and wife. Mrs. Shiflett was before marriage Miss Victoria Ann Knight, daughter of Mr. And Mrs. J.M. Knight, of Nortonsville. She is survived by her husband and seven children, four boys and three girls, Mr. Dewey Shiflett, of Baltimore; Norman, Ernest and Clifford Shiflett at home; Mrs. Jessie Morris, of Burnleys, and Vessie and Airline Shiflett, at home; four sisters and five brothers, Mrs. Ben Shiflett of Burnleys; Mrs. Josh Knight, of Quinqu; Mrs. Mabel Shiflett, of Pirkey; Mrs. Pearl Shiflett, of Nortonsville; Messrs. Clyde and James Knight, of March; Will Knight, of Profit; Isaac Knight, of Baltimore, and Ed Knight, of Charlottesville. The body was laid to rest in Evergreen cemetery. Rev. H.S. Knight conducted the funeral service in the presence of a large number of sorrowing friends and relatives. She enjoyed life greatly, but God in His wise providence saw fit to take her from us by whom she shall never be forgotten. The service will be at 9:30 a.m. Friday at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, with burial at Culley's MeadowWood Memorial Park. Family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. Thursday at Culley's MeadowWood Timberlane Road Chapel (893-4177), with a rosary to be said at 6 p.m. A native of London and former resident of Cleveland, she had lived in Tallahassee for 22 years. She was a data-processor coordinator for the state Department of Banking and Finance for 20 years until her retirement, and was a member of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church. She is survived by her husband, Thomas D. Shifflett of Tallahassee; two sons, Terry Shifflett of Tampa and Thomas Shifflett of Tallahassee; four daughters, Vicky Jordan of Athens, Ga., Kathleen of Dallas, Patricia Rozonca of Houston and Mary Catherine Bowen of Tallahassee; a brother, Dominic DeGiulo of Brighton, England; a sister, Josie Reilly of Castlebar, Ireland; 12 grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Victoria Elizabeth [Jollett] Breeden, 66, wife of Decater B. Breeden died suddenly at her home in Washington, D. C. early Tuesday morning, May 2. Mrs. Breeden had been a sufferer from asthma for years, but been in her usual health until a few hours before her death.  Mrs. Breeden was the youngest daughter of the late James Franklin and Lucy Shifflett Jollette, and was born at Nortonsville, Greene County on March 19,1878.  She was married to D. B. Breeden on Dec. 24, 1901 and spent most of her married life in Shenandoah. Her husband is a former N. W. [Norfolk & Western Railroad] engineer. They moved from Shenandoah to Waynesboro, VA, and from there to Washington, D.C. where he is employed in government work. She is survived by her husband and the following sisters: Mrs. A. J. (Emma) Coleman, Shenandoah; Mrs. W. B. (Mary) Davis, Harrisonburg, Mrs. Geo. F. (Sallie) Clift, Washington, D. C. and Mrs. W. J. (Laura) Sullivan of Shenandoah.  One daughter died in infancy. The following members of the family are deceased: Mrs. James (Leanna) Knight, of Albemarle County, B. L. Jollette of Stanardsville, William Isaac Jollette of Greene County, U. F. Jollette of Baltimore, Md. And one half brother Henry Jollette, of Harriston, VA.  Mrs. Breeden was a devout member of the U. B. Church and possessed an amiable disposition, which had endeared her to the hearts of many. The news of her death was received in Shenandoah with genuine regret and sorrow.  The funeral will be held from the U. B. Church this afternoon at 3 p.m. with the Rev. P. W. Fischer in charge. Burial will be in the U. B. Cemetery.

 

VICTORIA SHIFFLETT KNIGHT
Victoria Shifflett Knight, 94, died Saturday evening at Virginia Mennonite Home, where she had lived five years. Mrs. Knight, who had been ill eight years, was born Sept 2, 1887, at Brock Gap and was a daughter of the late Hiram Banks and Ellen Crawford Shifflett. She was a member of Gospel Hill Mennonite Church and attended Church of God of Prophecy in Harrisonburg. On Aug. 15, 1903, she married Lanzy P. Knight, who died June 6, 1947. Surviving are three sons, Ernest Knight of McGaheysville and Charles and Marion Knight, both of Harrisonburg; six daughters, Florence Parks, Gernie Rhinehart and Ethel Wilfong, all of Harrisonburg, Molly Smith of Park View, Frances Casidy of Mount Solon and Margie Wilfong of Richmond; 27 grandchildren; 61 great-grandchildren; and several great-great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Victoria S. Morris, 68, of RFD2, Crozet and a native of Greene County, died Saturday, April 25, 1964 in a Charlottesville, hospital. Born November 24, 1895, she was the daughter of the late Benjamin and Icey Shifflett. She leaves her husband Leonard M. Morris; three sons: Alton Morris, Fred Morris, and Tim Morris, all of RFD 2, of Crozet; two sisters, Mrs. Melvin Morris of Mission Home and Mrs. Florie Wood of Harrisonburg; a brother, Mack Shifflett of Dyke and twelve grandchildren. Funeral services were held Monday at two o'clock in the Prize Hill Church at Boonesville with burial in the church cemetery.

Shiflette, 84, of 116A Cottage St., Whitinsville, a retired corrections officer, died Tuesday, June 6, in UMass Memorial Medical Center -- University Campus, Worcester, after an illness. He leaves two daughters, Linda A. Richardson of Whitinsville and Lois Wesgan of Douglas; a brother, Henry Shiflette of Michigan; two sisters, Thelma Taylor and Gertrude Cisco, both of Salem, Va.; six grandchildren; a great-granddaughter; several nieces and nephews. Born in Louisa, Va., son of Minor and Linda (McDaniel) Shiflette, he lived many years in Worcester and Shrewsbury before moving to Whitinsville 20 years ago. He was a World War II Navy veteran. Mr. Shiflette worked 17 years at the Worcester County House of Corrections, retiring in 1977. He was a member of St. Matthew's Episcopal Church in Worcester. He was a 50-year member of Montacute Lodge of Masons in Worcester; a member of the Worcester Elks Lodge 243 and a member of the Retired State, County and Municipal Employees Association. The funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Friday, June 9, in Carr Funeral Home, 24 Hill St., Whitinsville. Burial will be in Pine Grove Cemetery. Shifflett.  She is survived by two brothers, George W. Beasley and Elwood Beasley of Barboursville; five sisters, Caroline Gibson, of Barboursville, Minnie Conley of Orange, Ann M. She was also preceded in death by six brothers; four sisters; and a son-in-law, Charles Johnson. She was born in Charlottesville, Va. on April 6, 1896 to the late Mr. and Mrs. Knewt Shiflett. Mrs. Naylor was a member of the Maitland Lane Free Methodist Church. Her husband Thomas F. Naylor died in 1972. She is survived by two sons, Edward F. of Erie and Robert T. of Cazadero, Calif.; a brother Dewey Shiflett of Verona, Va.; two grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. Friends will be received at the William G. Tanner Mortuary, Highland and Winter Avenues, from 7 to 9 pm Tuesday and Wednesday. She is survived by six daughters, Madaline Dean of Gordonsville, Christine Burcham of Gordonsville, Beatrice Bibb and husband, William, of Gordonsville, Marie Taylor and husband, Jerome, of Stafford, Bernice Henry of Gordonsville and Shirley Lecuyer and husband, Robert, of Barboursville; two sons, Claude and John Rogers, both of Gordonsville; 24 grandchildren; 35 great-grandchildren; and 18 great-great-grandchildren. A 36 year resident of Colorado Springs, passed away on October 21, 2002. She was born June 10, 1917 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania to George and Frances Donaher. She was married to Fred Shiflett in St. Petersburg, Florida on June 1, 1952. She worked as a secretary at Otis AFB, Massachusetts, and Norad in Colorado springs, and did volunteer work at Holy Trinity Parish in Colorado Springs after her retirement. She enjoyed reading, needlework, and crossword puzzles. She was an excellent cook, and enjoyed making cookies for her family and friends. She was a beloved and dedicated mother and grandmother who will be dearly missed by all. She is survived by her husband, and son Robert E. Born on Aug. 20, 1931, in Wardensville, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Richard and Dantie (Stewart) Landacre. Ernest Shifflettt predeceased his wife as did a sister, Nellie. Twelve children survive their mother, Richard, Daniel, Larry, Ernest, Bonnie, Debbie, Frances, Ronald, Donald, Dawn, Crystal and Shawn. Another sister, Peggy Brown, resides in Catonsville. The Rev. Dunn conducted a service at the Slack Funeral Home, P.A. on Jan. 9. Mrs. Shiflett was laid to rest in Good Shepherd Cemetery, Ellicott City.

Violette Wood, 80, of Gaithersburg, died Aug. 29 at Shady Grove Adventist Hospital in Rockville. Born Nov. 22, 1921 in Virginia, she was a daughter of the late Mack and Fannie Sue Shifflett. She was the wife of the late Thomas Gilbert Wood, who died in 1982.  Mrs. Wood was a homemaker. She was a member of the Flower Hill Church of the Brethren. She enjoyed talking on the phone to her many friends and family.  Survivors include two daughters, Shirley E. Pope of Florida and Lucille H. Layman and her husband, Nelson, of Germantown; one sister, Ethel Harding of Charles Town, W.Va.; five grandchildren; and 14 great grandchildren.  Funeral services will be held today at 11 a.m. at the Flower Hill Church of the Brethren, 7412 Muncaster Mill Road, Redland. Mrs. Virgie Shiflett, Favony Dr., R. D. 1, Holland, died yesterday in Toledo Hospital. Mrs. Shiflett, 66, was born in Virginia and had lived in Holland eight years. Virgie M. Collier, 88, of York, died at 10:30 p.m. Wednesday at York County Hospital and Home. She was the wife of the late Herman O. Collier.  The service will be 1 p.m. Saturday at the Everhart-Jackson-Heffner Funeral Home Inc., 1205 E. Market St., York. Burial will be at the convenience of the family in Mount Rose Cemetery. Viewing will be noon to 1 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.  Mrs. Collier was born Oct. 25, 1905, in Beldor, Va. She was the daughter of the late John W. and Matilda (Conelly) Shifflett.  She was employed by American Chain and Cable Co. for 35 years. She was a member of Stillmeadow Church of the Nazarene.  Mrs. Collier is survived by two sons, Hadley Collier of Middletown, N.J., and Willard T. Collier of Seven Valleys; three daughters, Attle L. Mundis, Elizabeth A. McVey and Shelva J. Handy, all of York; 13 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren, and a brother, Arthur Shifflett of Gaitersville, Va. She was preceded in death by a son, Victor A. Collier.  Officiating at the service will be her pastor, the Rev. Her husband is deceased. She was a member of the Evergreen Church of the Brethren at Dyke. Survivors include three sons, Arthur C. Shiflett, Garland Shiflett and Joseph Shiflett, all of Crozet; a daughter, Mrs. Violet Eubanks of Lexington; a brother, Jack Shiflett of Dyke; three sisters, Mrs. Kell Shiflett of Orange; Mrs. Fountain Shiflett and Mrs. Clement Morris, both of Dyke; and ten grandchildren. ELKTON — Virgie Mary Shifflett, 90, of Route 4, Elkton died Sunday at Camelot Hall Nursing Home, where she had been a patient six years. Mrs. Shifflett was born July 2, 1898, in Rockingham County and was a daughter of the late Robert and Eve Shifflett. Surviving are three daughters, Lydia A. Myers, Emma O. Shifflett and Mary S. Hensley, all of Elkton: two sons, James R. and Edgar E. Shifflett, both of Elkton; 10 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. The funeral will be conducted 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Stephen the Good Shepherd Episcopal Church at Rocky Bar by the Rev. Louis C. Breitenbach. Burial will be in Mount Olivet Cemetery at McGaheysville. The family will receive friends 7-8 p.m. Tuesday at the Brill Funeral Home in Elkton, and at other times at the Shifflett home.

PENN LAIRD - Virgil Henry Shifflett, 57, of Penn Laird died Thursday at his home. He had not been well several years and had been seriously ill six weeks. Mr. Shifflett was born Nov. 28, 1910 in Rockingham County and was the son of the late Hiram and Lilia Rogers Shifflett. Mr. Shifflett was engaged in the trucking and hauling business and was a lifelong resident of Penn Laird. On Aug. 6, 1935, he married the former Elsie Virginia Dean, who survives. Also surviving are seven sons, Joseph V., Johnnie E., William C., Leonard J., and Charles E. Shifflett, all of Penn Laird, Fonda Lee Shifflett of Elkton and Roger Dale Shifflett of McGaheysville; three daughters, Patricia Joyce Shifflett of Penn Laird, Mrs. Janice Lynn Lawson of Swift Run, and Mrs. Phyllis Jean Falls of Harrisonburg; two sisters, Mrs. Ruth Fitchett and Mrs. Eunice Breeden, both of Penn Laird; three brothers, C. E. and John E. Shifflett, both of Penn Laird, and James Franklin Shifflett of McGaheysville, and 10 grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Saturday at the Lindsey Harrisonburg Funeral Home by the Rev. Paul Shiflet. Burial will be in Eastlawn Memorial Gardens. Pallbearers will be R. M. ELKTON - Virgil Ivan Shifflett, 59, of Rt. 2, Elkton died at his home Wednesday afternoon. He had been in declining health several years. Mr. Shifflett was born Jan. 4, 1923, and was a son of the late G. Ashby and Cegurnia Rhine Shifflett. He was born and died in the same home, which has been in the Shifflett family five generations. He was a chemical operator at Merck and Co. before he retired in 1975 on disability after 30 years' service. He was a member of Mount Zion United Methodist Church near McGaheysville and served with the Army in Europe during World War II. He was a member of Gooden Brothers Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9292 at Elkton and the Elkton Ruritan Club. On Oct. 2,1948, he married the former Pansy Y. Good of Elkton, who survives. Also surviving are a son, Donald Virgil Shifflett, at home; a daughter, Faye Marie Shifflett of Harrisonburg; and two sisters, Thelma Hammer of McGaheysville and Halcie Cook of Richmond. The funeral will be conducted 11 a.m. Friday at Bethel United Church of Christ near Elkton by the Rev. Deborah Austin and the Rev. Gems W. Meinzer. A graveside service will be conducted by Gooden Brothers VFW Post in Mount Olivet Cemetery at McGaheysville. The body is at the Warren G. Kyger Funeral Home. The casket will be closed. Mrs. Shifflett was born July 27, 1902 at Dayton and was the daughter of the late Isaac D. and Lucy J. Begoon Roadcap. She was a member of the Mill Creek Church of the Brethren. Mr. Shifflett died March 30, 2001, at his residence. Born Jan. 15, 1930, in Quinwood, W.Va., he lived in Lake County for the past 46 years. Mr. Shifflett was a machinist for Skrl Tool & Die in Eastlake for 31 years before his retirement in 1996. Following his retirement, he was a driver for Classic Lexus in Mentor for four years. Virginia Shifflett, 81, of Stanardsville, Virginia, departed this life on Monday, July 25, 2011. She was born on May 30, 1930, to the late Marcellus and Addie Collier Shifflett and was the wife of the late Samuel Clarence Shifflett. She was also preceded in death by a son, James O. Shifflett; her granddaughter, Crystal Morris; great-grandson, Tristen Roach; and son-in-law, Otis Roach; two brothers, Ollie Shifflett and Alvin Shifflett; her sister, Alder Lawson; and ex son-in-law, Ronnie Shifflett. Mrs. Shifflett is survived by six daughters, Minnie Shifflett and her companion, Jay, of Stanardsville, Delmar Roach of Stanardsville, Lois Shifflett of Somerset, Helen Morris and her husband, Earl, of Dyke, Patsy Roach and her husband, Johnny, of Louisa, and Connie Shifflett and her companion, Bill, of Ruckersville. She also leaves four special siblings whom she raised after her mothers death, John Shifflett and his wife, Hattie and Geneva Shifflett, both of Stanardsville, Madeline Shifflett and her husband, Lonnie, of Madison and Marie Conley of Charles Town, West Virginia. Additional survivors include ten grandchildren, fourteen great grandchildren; her ex sons-in-law, James Shifflett, Kenny Shifflett, Neal Houchens and Craig Shifflett; many nieces and nephews and friends too numerous to name, whom were all special to her. A special thank you to Dr. Bentley Calhoun and Staff, the University of Virginia Transfusion Center, the ladies of Tassco II, Stephanie, Felicia, Mary and Theresa. We could never thank each of you enough for the kindness you have shown to our Mom. Mom was the world's greatest mother, grandmother, and great grandmother that anyone could have wished for. She was born May 8, 1922, in Rockingham County, and was the daughter of the late George M. and Mittie Morris Shifflett. She married the late James D. Sullivan Sr. on June 2, 1936. She was a longtime member of the McGaheysville United Methodist Church and sang in the choir. She did a lot of volunteer work until her health declined. She was a homemaker who loved the Lord, her church, and especially her family. She is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Janet M. and Don Neff of Burlington, N.J., and Nancy L. and Robert Irons Jr. of Lexington; four sons and daughters-in-law, James Jr. and Sue of Harrisonburg, Carroll C. and Sandra of Stanardsville, Richard Sr. and Juanita Price of Timberville, Bobby L. and Betty of Danville; three grandchildren reared in her home, Diana Miller, Tammy Kitta, and Richard Sullivan Jr., as well as 13 others, Rita Hunt, Rhonda Goff, Chris Sullivan, Jayme Brooks, Joey Sullivan, Charles C. Sullivan Jr., Salita Sullivan, Donna Verrico, Matthew Sullivan, Holli McConnell, Heather St. Amand, Kelly Shifflett, and Jared Shifflett; 30 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a son, Jimmy K. Shifflett, also, six brothers, James, Clarence, and Jacob Shifflett, Robert, Fred, and George Morris, and one sister, Zadie Hansbrough. She died Wednesday, March 10, 2010, at Christina Hospital in Newark, Del., of brain cancer. Virginia grew up in Virginia She moved to Harlansburg, Pa graduating from Harlansaburg Public School. Virginia Shifflett and Dumitri Turk were married Aug. 26, 1945, at New Castle, Pa. At time of his death, they had been married over 54 years. During that time, they lived in Pennsylvania before moving to the Bixby area in 1982. Virginia was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Dumitri, in 2000. She is survived by: three children, Roger Turk and wife, Kathy of Hockessin, Del., Daniel Turk of Texas, Marcia Buxman and husband, Mel of Colo.; 11 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren. Mrs. Anne Virginia Shifflett (nee Mowbray) wife of the late Reuben D. Shifflett died November 25, 1974 in a hospital in Delaware at the age of 89 tears. She was the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. John Mowbray of Berrytown, Va. She was born and raised and spent part of her life in that area before she and her husband moved to Maryland. After the death of her husband in January, 1963, she moved to Delaware to live with one of her sons. She is survived by five daughters, Mrs. Christine Scott, Catonsville, Maryland, Mrs. Margie Berry, Sykesville, Maryland, Mrs. Nina Shifflett, Earlysville, Va., Mrs. Mary Shifflett, Charlottesville, Va. and Mrs. Virginia Haney, Barboursville, Va. Also six sons, Russell of Woodbine, Md., Grover, Catonsville, Md., Raleigh, Oella, Md., Mervin, Ellicott City, Md., Malvin, Great Falls, Montana and William Howard, New Castle, Delaware; one sister. Mrs. Alice Shifflett, Elkton, Va.; one brother, John H. Mowbray, Baltimore; 44 grandchildren, 86 great-grandchildren and 16 great-great-grandchildren. Funeral services were conducted by the Rev. George W. Pferdent of Betheny United Methodist Church, Ellicott City, Md. She was born March 7, 1898 in Pocahontas County, W.Va., a daughter of Eli and Sarah Mullins. She had moved to Florida from Staunton, Va. in 1972. She was a member of the Assembly of God Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Mose Shifflett, on Dec. 26, 1971. Survivors include a son, Carl J. Buchanan Sr. of Summerfield; a sister, Josephine Weese of Baltimore; nine grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. Clinton Yowell and Robert M. Yowell; a grandchild, Janet Yowell; four sisters; and one brother. She is survived by two daughters, Dolores Y. Powell and her husband, Frank, and Iris Y. Cersley and her husband, Kenneth; a son, Paul W. Yowell and his wife, Shirley, all of Boonesville; two sisters, Rose Laverne Morris of Earlysville and Marie S. She is survived by a daughter, Ann Marshall and her husband, Tavner; a step-son, Steve Shifflett and his wife, Barbara; a step-daughter, Sharon Davis and her husband, Mager; three sisters, Veta Henshaw of Ruckersville, Mamona Myers and Alice Slaughter of Maryland; two granddaughters, Teresa Gilbert and her husband, Frank, and LaVerne Shifflett and her husband, Glen; a great-granddaughter, Jessica Gilbert; two great-grandsons, Aaron Gilbert and Matthew Shifflett; a number of step-grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, a lot of nieces, nephews and friends. A funeral service will be held today at 1 p.m. at Ryan Funeral Chapel, Quinque, with the Rev. Wendell Lamb officiating. Virginia Catherine Shifflett Drummond, 91, of New Market, died Saturday, Oct. 20, 2007, at Living Waters Assisted Living in Timberville, where she had lived for several months. Mrs. Drummond was born July 15, 1916, in Rockingham County, and was the daughter of the late Claude and Edna Miller Vann. She was a retired employee of the former Aileen Inc., where she was a seamstress. She was the housekeeper/companion to the late Gladys Shifflett of New Market for many years. Mrs. Drummond was a member of the New Market Seventh-day Adventist Church. Her first husband, Joseph W. Shifflett, preceded her in death March 4, 1971, and her second husband, Naylor R. Drummond, preceded her in death June 16, 1991. Survivors include a son, William R. “Bill” Shifflett of Luray; a daughter, Joann Shirkey of Timberville; five stepchildren, Leon Shifflett of North Carolina, Marie Rush, Gary Drummond, Naylor Drummond Jr. and Dwight Drummond, all of Broadway; nine grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren and a number of step-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren. Pastor Shane Anderson will conduct the funeral 11 a.m. Tuesday at the New Market Seventh-day Adventist Church. Burial will follow at St. Matthew’s Cemetery in New Market. The family will receive friends from 7-8 this evening at Theis Funeral Chapel in New Market.

BERKELEY SPRINGS, W.Va. - Virginia Crystal "Ginny" Shifflett, 75, of Berkeley Springs, and formerly of Clear Spring, died Monday, Oct. 23, 2000, at her son's home in Hancock. Born Dec. 25, 1924, in Clear Spring, she was the daughter of the late Oliver Clinton and Mary Emma Catherine Baker Bowers.  Her husband, Cecil Edward Shifflett, died Jan. 6, 1993.  She attended public schools in Baltimore. She worked seasonally at local canning factories and at Sagner Sewing Factory in McConnellsburg, Pa. She was a homemaker.  She was of the Lutheran faith.  She was a member of AARP.  She is survived by a daughter, Lillian Irene Roach of Berkeley Springs; two sons, Gary Wayne Shifflett of Hancock, and Edward Franklin Shifflett Sr. of Berkeley Springs; five grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; six great-grandchildren; three stepgreat-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.  She was preceded in death by two sisters, Blanche Henson and Estella Mullin; and four brothers, Jacob E. Bowers, Lester Bowers, Kenneth Bowers and Richard Bowers. Services will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Helsley-Johnson Funeral Home, 306 Union St., Berkeley Springs. The Rev. Wayne Frum will officiate. Burial will be in Greenway Cemetery, Berkeley Springs.  The family will receive friends today from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home, which will be open from 10 a.m.

Mrs. Virginia Shifflett wife of G. M. Shifflett, died at her home at Roadside Wednesday morning from pneumonia following influenza. She was fifty-five years old. Surviving are her husband and eleven children. Alexander, Harrison and Joseph Shifflett of Roadside; Moses and Lee Shifflett of West Virginia, Mary of Elkton; David of Maryland; and Howard, Sadie, Lewis and Jacob Shifflett at home. She also leaves one sister Mrs. Charles H. Marshall of near Richmond, Va. and two half brothers Charles Davis and Joseph Wood of Roadside. She was a member of the United Brethren Church. Several other members of the same family are suffering from influenza.

Born Sept. 18, 1914, in Woodbine, she was the daughter of the late John William and Shirley Leeanna Koontz Shifflett. She was the wife of the late Truman Davis and Victor Nickoles. She had been a homemaker for most of her life. She was a member of Church of the Open Door in Westminster. She enjoyed playing bingo and cards, eating crabs, and especially spending time with her family. Surviving are sons and daughters-in-law Dalton and Dorothy Davis, of Eldersburg, Rudy and Dawn Davis, of Tennessee, and Billy and Deborah Davis, of Sykesville; daughters and sons-in-law Janet Parrish and friend Fred Baldwin, of Frederick, Carolyn and Mike Stem, of Westminster, Joan and Tom Holden, of Sykesville, and Jean Reeder, of Sykesville; great-grandchildren, with whom she lived, Jade and Brooke Grubbs, and Bryan Miller; friend Phyllis Pickett, of Sykesville; 27 grandchildren; 76 great-grandchildren; and 20 great-great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by sons Jack, Randy and Donald "Peck" Davis; siblings Sylvia Davis and Leon Shifflett; and grandchildren Johnny Jenkins, Donald Davis and Karen Clipp. Interment will be private.

Mrs. Shiflett was born in Floyd County on June 17, 1944, daughter of the late Bill Sisson and the late Mary Cox Sisson. She was also preceded in death by a son, Kerry Shiflett. Mrs. Shiflett was a homemaker and was of the Baptist faith. Survivors include her husband, Billy Shiflett, to whom she was married on June 1, 1973; three daughters, Ms. Angela Gatrel of Taylorsville, Mrs. Christi Shiflett Williams and her husband, Gene, of Adairsville, and Mrs. Pam Duncan and her husband, Mike, of Aragon; two sons, Roger Williams and Melissa Neal of Rome, and Keith Williams of Taylorsville; a sister, Mrs. Juanita Hughes of Cedartown; three brothers, Buddy, Larry, and Kenneth Sisson, all of Cedartown; a special granddaughter, Mrs. Stephanie Brookshire, and her husband, Jeremiah, of Taylorsville; 11 other grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews also survive. Ferrell and M. Lee Ramsey. Burial will be at Mount Olivet Cemetery at McGaheysville. Mrs. Shifflett died Tuesday evening at Rockingham Memorial Hospital. She was born Sept. 29, 1913, at Elkton and was the daughter of the late Newton and Mertie Weast Hardesty. She retired in 1976 after 26 years with Swift & Co. She was a member of Mill Creek Church of the Brethren. On Aug. 18, 1933, she married Sheldon V. Shifflett, who survives. Also surviving are five sons, Sam J. and Dennis W. Shifflett of Harrisonburg, James E. Shifflett of McGaheysville, George S. Shifflett of Winchester and Welty L. Shifflett of Timberville; three daughters, June Hazel Campbell of Penn Laird and Lessie M. Summers and Ethel M. Virginia K. Fulk Shiflet, 72, of Fulks Run, died Aug. 20, 2006, in Harrisonburg, Va. Mrs. Shiflet was born Nov. 18, 1933, in Fulks Run, and was the daughter of the late Jacob Ernest and Nora Miller Fulk. She had worked nine years at Rockingham Poultry and last worked 17 years at Oak Lea Nursing Home. She was a member of the Mountain Grove Church of the Brethren. On Sept. 16, 1955, she married Linwood M. Shiflet, who died Sept. 13, 2004. Surviving are one son, Linden K. Shiflet and wife, Lorie, of Fulks Run, two grandsons, Justin and Brandon Shiflet. She was preceded in death by a brother, Ernest Fulk. The Rev. Don Guthrie and Jerry Shiflet will conduct a funeral service Wednesday at 3:00 p.m. at the Mt. Grove Church of the Brethren. A memorial service for Virginia M. Shifflett of Southwest Portland will be at 10 a.m. Thursday in Pegg, Paxson & Springer Chapel in Beaverton. Private interment will be in Willamette National Cemetery. She died of causes related to age Sunday in a Portland care center. Mrs. Shifflett was 80. She was born Sept. 18, 1911, in Hugo, Colo. She married John Shifflett in 1944 in St. Louis. The couple moved to the Portland area from Eugene in 1950. Mrs. Shifflett, a homemaker, lived in the Gresham area before moving to Portland earlier this year. Her husband died in 1988. Survivors include her son, John, and her daughter, Susan Luchs, both of Aloha; and a brother, Douglas Engelhardt of Honolulu. The family suggests that remembrances be contributions to the Oregon Division of the American Cancer Society.

Virginia Mae Shifflett, 79, of Elkton passed away, Wednesday, Feb. 24, 2010 at Rockingham Memorial Hospital in Harrisonburg. Mrs. Shifflett was born May 30, 1930, in the Thoroughfare area of Rockingham County and was the daughter of the late Ree Otto and Mary Elizabeth Breeden. Mrs. Shifflett was a lifetime resident of the Elkton area and attended Hensley's United Methodist Church in her youth and Maple Springs School. She was employed with Marvel Poultry and retired from Golden Acres. She was also a homemaker and enjoyed her family, gardening, flowers, and her pet dog "Tiny". On May 5, 1945, she married Robert Lee "Buddy" Shifflett, who preceded her in death on June 8, 1998. Survivors include a son, Roger L. Shifflett Sr. and wife, Carolyn; two daughters, Shirley M. Morris and husband, Junior, and Carolyn Faye Thompson and husband, Aubrey; a sister, Kathleen Hensley all of Elkton; seven grandchildren, one step grandchild, 17 great-grandchildren, one step-great-grandchild, one great-great-grandchild and numerous nieces and nephews. Besides her parents and husband, she also was preceded in death by a daughter, Doris Jean Shifflett; brothers, Elmer Breeden, Alvie Breeden, Carson Eppard, Odis Eppard and Charmin Breeden; and sisters, Ora Dean, Ruby Snow and Thelma Haney. A funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 28, 2010, at the Kyger Funeral Home Chapel in Elkton with Pastor Wayne Wright officiating. Burial will follow in the Elk Run Cemetery. Born November 4, 1923, In Albemarle County, she was the oldest daughter of the late E. T. Shifflett and Anna P. Shifflett. She was predeceased by her husband's, W. G. Leake Sr., E. C. Moser, and Z. T. Eddins, also a stepdaughter Maria M. Burney. She is survived by her son, William G. Leake Jr. (Bill), and his friend, Mary Clatterbuck, of Barboursville; her daughters, Joyce L. Fisher, and Judith A. Nicely and her husband, Gordon of Ruckersville; a stepdaughter, Dollie G. Smith, of North Carolina; three granddaughters, Cheryl L. Martino, Rebecca (Becky) F. Harlow, and Lorie A. Kestner; four grandsons, Jeff S. Leake, Barry D. Leake, J.C. Arnold, and Robert (Roby) Fisher; sixteen great grandchildren; her sisters, Vera E. Shifflett, of Charlottesville, and Louise E. Shifflett, of Barboursville; numerous nieces, nephews, and other devoted family and friends. She was a devoted Mom and homemaker. She was dearly loved by her family and will be missed by all that knew her. She was a dear Aunt and Mother to all. Mrs. Virginia May Woodward of Washington died Wednesday at Gallagher Hospital that city, after an extended illness.  She was a native of Albemarle, daughter of Branch and Evie Johnson Shiflett, and was 38 years of age.  Besides her parents she is survived by two sons, Roger Woodward of Baltimore and Richard Woodward of Washington.  Mrs. Woodward also leaves two brothers, Robert Shiflett of Akron Ohio and McKinley Shiflett of Washington and four sisters, Mrs. Leonard Shiflett of Baltimore, Mrs. Mildred Ryne and Mrs. Oma Miller, both of Washington and Mrs. Edward Sullivan of Mission Home.  The funeral was held at 1 o’clock this afternoon from Prize Hill Church, the service being conducted by the Rev. Freeman Fisk.  Interment followed in the churchyard.

Born Aug. 27, 1935, in Martinsburg, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late John William and Cora Shifflett Donivan. She retired as a nursing assistant at Williamsport Nursing Home. She was a member of Buck Hill Bible Church. She was a member of AARP. She is survived by her husband, Harold R. Osborne; three daughters, Sherry L. Dockeney of Falling Waters, Kelly J. Hoffmann of Martinsburg and Stormy R. Peterson of Paw Paw, W.Va.; four sisters, Anna Eavey, Doris Steele, Jean Seeders and Odessa Cloud, all of Martinsburg; and four grandchildren. She was preceded in death by infant twin daughters, Karen Sue Osborne and Karol Ray Osborne; her twin sister, Ona Lee Donivan; and two brothers, Millard Donivan and David Donivan. A native of Mission Home in Greene County, Virginia was born July 11, 1929, the daughter of the late Martin "Otis" Shifflett and Polly Morris Shifflett. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Joe Oxendine, and her second husband, Lester M. Slaughter; one sister, Bessie Keaton; and two brothers, William "Glen" Shifflett and James "Elmer" Shifflett. She is survived by four children, Robert Joseph Oxendine and his wife, Emily, Ronnie Lee Oxendine and his wife, Milly, Lester Ray Slaughter and his wife, Crystal, Jeanette Sue Dudley and her husband, Ray Dudley; eight grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. In addition to her children, Virginia is also survived by her brother, Jesse E. Shifflett and his wife, Eleanor, of Yorktown, Virginia; three sisters, Ethel M. Shifflett and her husband, Arthur, of Boonesville, Virginia, Fannie S. Morris and her husband, Roy, of Hampton, Virginia, and Mary Ann S. Page and her Husband, Woodrow of Richmond, Virginia; and numerous nieces and nephews. Virginia was a wonderful homemaker, loved cooking for her family and friends. She enjoyed gardening and was very proud of her roses. Mrs. Spitzer Dies In Penna.
PORT REPUBLIC, May 31 - Mrs. Virginia Rebecca Spitzer, 68, widow of Dorsey P. Spitzer, and a former resident of this community, died Friday evening at 10:30 in Palmyra, Pa., at the home of Albert Spangler. Mrs. Spitzer was in her usual health until Friday and died very suddenly as the result of a blood clot. Her death came as a great shock to her family and many friends here. Mrs. Spitzer was a daughter of the late George and Lydia Shifflett. Mrs. Spitzer was born In the old Stone House on the Burke farm, near Cub Run where she spent the early part of her life. She and her late husband lived here for a number of years. For ten years she had been making her home with her children in Delaware and Pennsylvania. She had been a member of the Port Republic Methodist Church for a number of years and was a woman of Christian character. Her husband preceded her in death, Dec. 9, 1940. Surviving three sons. Lt. Comdr. Cecil Spitzer, U.S. Navy, William Theodore Spitzer, Seaford, Del., Ralph L. Spitzer, Laurel, Del. and one daughter, Mrs. Paul (Frances) Bishop, Seaford, Del. Five grandchildren and two brothers, Frank Shifflett, Palmyra, Pa., and George Shifflett, Annapolis, Md., also survive. She also leaves four sisters, Mrs. Luther (Sally) Miller, McGaheysville; Mrs. Lynn (Amendia) Shifflett, Harrisonburg; Mrs. Vernon (Minnie) Myers, Roanoke and Mrs. Sylvester (Margaret) Crawford, Waynesboro. A number of nieces and nephews also survive. Three brothers preceded her in death. Funeral services will be conducted Monday afternoon at two o'clock from the Port Republic Methodist Church. Virginia Ruth Shifflett was born September 8, 1940 in Herculaneum, Missouri. She was the daughter of William Henry and Virginia Alice (Manning) Drinen. Virginia died on April 6, 2011 at Jefferson Regional Medical Center in Crystal City, MO at the age of 70 years 6 months 29 days. She is survived by her husband, Roy M. Shifflett, Ware, MO; daughter, Boudett (Bruce) Scheller, Troy, IL and Dan (Melissa Neal) Shifflett, Lexington, IN; siblings, Lawrence Drinen, Oklahoma City, OK, Charles (Tiny) Drinen, South County, MO, Wilma (Lee) Head, Perryville, MO, Alice Buren, St. Louis, MO, Betty (Alvin) Keefe, Hillsboro, MO; Grandchildren, Trevor Fielder, Kristi Boyd, Darcy Gail Shifflett, Maggie Virginia Shifflett, Lucas Shifflett, and Richie Shifflett; great-granddaughter, Emma Boyd. Virginia Ruth (Rose) Shifflett, 80, of Glasgow, Va., died on Wednesday, September 10, 2008. She was born on March 28, 1928. Virginia retired from Burlington Industries after 22 years. She was the daughter of the late William Russell Rose and Mary Hyler Rose. Mrs. Shifflett is preceded in death by her husband, Robert Davis Shifflett. She is survived by four sons, Neil, Timmy, Larry and Chip; and a sister, Joyce. Mrs. Shifflett is also survived by 16 grandchildren; and 15 greatgrandchildren. Mrs. Virginia Ruth Shiflett, 57, died unexpectantly, Wednesday at her home in Doylesville.  She was born in Augusta County, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Charles Roberts.  She is survived by her husband Jessie A. Shiflett; four daughters, Mrs. E. L. Thomas, Mrs. Mervin Sandridge, and Mrs. Morgan Garrison all of Crozet and Mrs. Cecil Gibson of White Hall; four sons, C. G. Shiflett of Charlottesville, and J. A. Shiflett, Jr., A. Shiflett and E. C. Shiflett all of White Hall; a sister Mrs. R. H. Hayden of Staunton; two brothers, C. R. Roberts and L. G. Roberts both of Churchville; and 15 grandchildren.  A funeral service will be held tomorrow at 2 p.m. at Brown’s Cove Methodist Church, with burial in Mount Moriah Methodist Church Cemetery at White Hall.

Mrs. Virginia Snow Shifflett, 86, of Mt. Airy, Md., died Saturday, Feb. 22, 2003, at the Frederick Memorial Hospital. Born Oct. 14, 1917, in Virginia, she was the daughter of the late Ed and Rhoda Morris Snow. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, James Walter Shifflett, who died in 1993; two sisters, Bessie Baugher and Geneva Sussman; and four brothers, Stewart, Tom, Walter, and Thurmond Snow. She lived in Charlottesville for many years. After the death of her husband she moved to Maryland and lived with her nephew and sister, Bessie Baugher. At the time of death she was a resident of Pleasant View Nursing Home. Mt. Airy, Md. Surviving are one step-daughter, Naomi Roberts of Charlottesville; two nieces, Gwen Phillips, of Edgewater, Md., and Linda Bowen of Ruckersville; and nephews, Brenton Baugher of Damascus, Md., and Douglas Baugher of Adamstown, Md. She will be remembered by many of her friends and the staff of the Pleasant View Nursing Home. Memorial services will be held at a later date in Charlottesville. Olin L. Vivian E. Shiflett, 61, of Colonial Beach, died Friday, Feb. 27, at Medical College of Virginia in Richmond.  Mrs. Shiflett was a supply clerk at the Naval Surface Weapons Center at Dahlgren and had previously worked at First Virginia Bank in Colonial Beach for 10 years.  She was also a past president of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Colonial Beach Rescue Squad and the current district chairman of the March of Dimes of Westmoreland County.  Mrs. Shiflett was also a member of Oak Grove Baptist Church.  She is survived by her husband, John E. Shiflett of the home, two daughters, Ms. J. Dale Dodd of Amherst, N. Y., and Miss Linda Shiflett of Herndon, a son, Rondall L. Shiflett of Spotsylvania, a sister, Mrs. Helen Lepley of Baileys Crossroads, a brother, Clarence Daniel of Falls Church and three grandchildren.  A funeral service will be held at Nash and Slaw Funeral Home in Colonial Beach at 2 p. m. Sunday.  Burial is at Historyland Memorial Park in King George.  The Rev. Willard D. Brown and the Rev. Eugene Foreman will officiate.  Visitation is from 5 to 8 p.  m. Vivian was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota on April 4, 1923, daughter of the late Leon and Ruth (Mauer) Burling. She resided in the Flint-Burton area most of her life. Vivian Burling married Floyd Shiflett on August 31, 1946. He preceded her in death on October 24, 1997. Vivian was a member of Bible Baptist Church. Mrs. Shiflett is survived by: her children, Barry and wife Susan Shiflett, Ted Shiflett; grandchildren, Annette and husband Joe Northrop, James Shiflett; great-grandchildren Alek and Zoja; nephew, Donald and wife Faye Burling; many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her brother, Virgil Burling.

Vivian Sayre Shifflett, 85, of 302 N. Second St., Bridgewater, formerly of Harrisonburg, died Sunday, Aug. 7, 2011, at Bridgewater Nursing Home. Mrs. Shifflett was born June 28, 1926, in Mount Crawford, Va., and was a daughter of the late Moss Mcowan and Clarice (Hoke) Sayre. She was a graduate of Bridgewater High School and had one year of nurses training at Rockingham Memorial Hospital’s Nursing School. On Dec. 24, 1946, she was married to Marion Shifflett Jr., who preceded her in death Feb. 3, 2011. She is survived by a son, Wayne Shifflett and wife, June Anne, of Weyers Cave; two grandchildren, David Shifflett and Martha Shifflett, both of Weyers Cave; and two great-grandchildren, Autumn and Siera Nesselrodt. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, Aug. 9, 2011, at 2 p.m. at the Kyger Funeral Home in Harrisonburg with the Rev. Helen Zottoli officiating. Burial will follow at Eastlawn Memorial Gardens near Harrisonburg. The family will receive friends Monday from 7 until 8 p.m. at the funeral home. Vivian Shifflett Walton, 68, died Feb. 15, 1989, at her home in Crozet.  She was born Dec. 27, 1920, in Albemarle County, daughter of the late Cornelious F. Shifflett and Nellie Florence Shifflett.  She was also preceded in death by her husband Nelson E. Walton.  She is survived by a son Boyd Walton of Troy; four sisters, Ethel Shifflett of Crozet, Ellen Kendall of Baltimore, Lena R. Babington of Baltimore and Della Hensley of Elkton; a brother Walter Shifflett of Charlottesville; five grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.  She was employed with Acme Visible Records Co. in Crozet.  The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 tonight at the Anderson Funeral Home Chapel.  Funeral  services will be 2 p. m. Saturday at the Prize Hill Church in Boonesville.  Interment will be in the church cemetery with Dr. Roy Thomas officiating.  Anderson Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

 

VURLIE SHIFFLETT ATKINS
Mrs. Vurlie Shifflett Atkins, 73, died Tuesday, March 1, at Suncoast Hospital, Largo, Fla. Born Aug. 2, 1909, in Greer (Greene County), Va., Mrs. Atkins lived in the Gaithersburg area for more than 15 years before moving to Florida. Surviving Mrs. Atkins, besides her husband, are five daughters, Corine Pratt of Radcliff, Ohio, Geraldine Delwilder of St. Petersburg, Fla., Thelma Atkins of Pinellas Park, Fla., Patsy Atkins of Clearwater, Fla., and Hazel Lawhorn, Wheaton; one son, Russell Atkins, Frederick; one brother, Paul Shifflett, Gaithersburg; three sisters, Ethel Harding, Violet Wood and Reva Shifflett, Gaithersburg; 14 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Friends may call from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Friday, March 4, at the Gartner Sandison Funeral Home, 316 E. Diamond Ave., Gaithersburg, where funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, March 5, Interment will be in Parklawn Cemetery, Rockville.

Note from Talmadge: Vurlie was daughter of Mack & Fannie Shifflett and granddaughter of William & Jennie Shifflett Shifflett & John Addison & Permelia Francis Collier Shifflett. The Paul Shifflett listed as brother was actually a first cousin (son of Mack's brother Emanuel Shifflett) that had lived with them when he was young. Because of that he seemed more like a brother.
