EBER SHIFFLET
The Atchison Daily Globe, Atchison, Ks, Fri, Mar. 19, 1926
Heart Disease Fatal to Civil War Veteran, Old Atchison Resident. Death came
suddenly to Eber Shifflet, Civil war veteran, early this morning. As he was
reclining on a davenport at his home, 1407 South Eighth street, shortly after
6:30 o’clock, he collapsed, and when his wife reached his side, he was dead.
Physicians said death was due to heart trouble. Mr. Shifflet had been feeling
ill for only a few days before he passed away. Last Tuesday night he complained
of a pain in his side, but Wednesday it had apparently disappeared. Yesterday he
weakened again, and last night fainted in his room. He passed a restless night,
and this morning arose shortly after 4 o’clock. He had not been in the best of
health, since he was run down by an automobile at Fifth and Commercial streets
last September 20. Eber Shifflet was a splendid citizen, and very well known. He
was active in Baptist church circles, and despite his age was a faithful member
of the Baptist choir. He sang at the church last Sunday. Three years ago Mr.
Shifflet was retired from the mail service, after more than twenty years as a
rural route carrier out of the Atchison post office. He moved to Atchison from
Whiting about thirty years ago, and for a number of years served as a justice of
the peace. Mr. Shifflet was born in Bureau county, Ill., April 1, 1844. He
enlisted early in the Civil war, and served throughout that conflict. After the
war he returned to Bureau county, and was married to Miss Elizabeth Sconner.
They farmed there for three years and then moved to near Whiting, Kans., where
they lived on a farm for a short time before Mr. Shifflet entered the dry goods
business in Whiting. Fifteen years ago Mrs. Shifflet died here. Five years later
Mr. Shifflet married Miss Annie Ache, who survives him. Mr. and Mrs. Shifflet
had no children, but about a week ago they adopted little Robert Rayfield. Two
brothers survive: Will Shifflet, 927 North Seventh street, and Cyrus Shifflet,
of Delano, Calif. A sister, Mrs. Peachy Hipple, lives in Hutchison. As a soldier
in the Union army, Mr. Shifflet, had a varied experience. He enlisted in Company
B of the 57th Illinois Infantry, and served for three months, re-enlisting in
the same organization for the duration of the war. He was a sergeant. At the
battle of Corinth he was severely wounded, bullets piercing both legs. For three
days he was listed as missing, until his brother, Will Shifflet, who was a
member of the same company, found him unconscious and almost dead, in a cellar.
With the help of other soldiers, Will Shifflet carried his brother to the
regimental relief station, and from there he was sent back to Bureau county to
recover from his injuries. Within two months Eber Shifflet was back with his
company, and served with it throughout the war, marching with Sherman to the
sea, and participating in several important engagements. At the close of the
war, the Shifflet brothers were discharged at Louisville, Ky., and the company
was later mustered out at Chicago. Mrs. Shifflet had not decided this afternoon
as to the time of the funeral services. As soon as word arrives from the family,
the time will be announced. NOTE: I think the Cyrus listed in this obit is
actually Silas Leroy Shiflett.

has moved on to a better place. Grandma E led a full life while with us. She
touched each of us in her own way. We were very fortunate to share many
holidays, special events, meals and snacks with her. We have laughed with her
and we have cried with her. We have shopped with her and we have vacationed with
her. Later in life she developed a love for shoes and purses which is shared
with her granddaughters and great-granddaughters. She would sometimes surprise
us with what she said-be it a statement to make us laugh or a fact she shared
from over 50 years ago. Grandma E is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law; Delois and Agnew Morris of Crozet and Opal and Delmas Shifflett of Boonesville.
She had four granddaughters and one grandson, Suzette and Steve Kempler of

Crozet. We would like to express our heartfelt appreciation to Mary Ann Gibson,
'The Lead Lady,' and the staff at Gibson's Adult Care Home in Crozet. We could
not have found a better place for her to spend the last few years. Grandma E
thought of it as home and enjoyed living there. We would also like to express
our appreciation to the Hospice of the Piedmont for their services these last
weeks. Pallbearers are Jason Shifflett, Steve Kempler, Alex Kempler Albert 'Ski'
