SARAH BURTON JOLLETT WYANT

Sarah Burton Jollett Wyant passed away peacefully at her home in Crozet, Virginia, on Tuesday, August 6, 2013, at the age of 92. Born in Greene County, Virginia, on May 8, 1921, Sarah was the second daughter of the late Lewis Lloyd Jollett and Mary Neville Peluso Jollett. She was preceded in death by her sisters, Edith Norwood J. Roberts and Martha Lou J. Hammett. Sarah grew up in Greene County, was a key player on her high school's unbeaten basketball team, and received her teaching degree from Longwood College in Farmville. For most of her adult life she was a resident of White Hall and Crozet in Albemarle County. At the age of 18 she began her teaching career in a one-room school house in western Albemarle, teaching grades one through eight. During World War II she worked in war support offices in Washington, D.C., and Baltimore, Maryland. Later Sarah taught third and fourth grades and became the principal at White Hall Primary School. She then taught first grade at Crozet Elementary School from 1961 until her retirement in 1990. In the 1960s she was among the first teachers in the nascent Head Start program in central Virginia. During those years and into the 1970s she also taught home-bound children with physical disabilities who at that time were unable to attend public school. Over the years she often counted among her students two, sometimes even three generations from the same family. It was rare for her to travel anywhere in Virginia and not run into a former student, or the parents of a former student, who always remembered her good humor and commitment as a teacher and appreciated her positive impact on their lives. A talkative, sociable person and generally considered the life of any gathering, Sarah enjoyed movies and Broadway musicals, reading, traveling, and spending time with family and friends. She loved adventure (but not heights!), good food and drink, and good taste generally. She was an avid team bowler with actual trophies to her credit. She had extensive self-taught knowledge of Virginia's plants, produce, flowers, and trees, was always interested in history, and took every opportunity to visit historical and cultural sites throughout Virginia and farther afield, with a special interest in U.S. presidents' birthplaces and homes. For much of her adult life, both while teaching and in retirement, Sarah took continuing education classes covering a wide range of subjects at Longwood and at the University of Virginia. She was also a loyal fan of UVa sports, especially basketball. She will be remembered for her wit and laughter, her courage and perseverance, and her dedication to education and lifelong learning. Sarah is survived by her younger brother, Lewis Logan Jollett and his wife, Esther; and by her younger sister, Jean Ann Jollett Marks; by her five children: Linda Jo Wyant, Theresa Ann W. Toms and her husband Jack, Joseph Randolph Wyant Jr. and his wife Theresa Diane, Sarah Lee W. Hartley and her husband Robert, and Jean Burton Wyant; by four grandchildren, Nathan Louis Toms, David Marshall Toms, Sarah Rebecca Wyant, and Joseph Adam Wyant; by one great-grandchild, Braden Louis Toms; and by numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. A memorial celebration of Sarah's life will be held at the Meadows Community Center, 5735 Meadows Drive, Crozet, VA 22932, on Friday, August 23, 2013, from 11:30 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. In accordance with Sarah's wishes, her remains will be interred during a private family service near her childhood home in Greene County. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Longwood University, 201 High St., Farmville, VA 23909; http://www.longwood.edu/advancement/ makeagift.htm.
