ALLEN FRANKLIN VIA
Allen Franklin Via, 81, of Charlottesville died Wednesday, June 21, 2006, at Martha Jefferson Hospital. Born March 18, 1925, in Albemarle County, he was the son of the late Walter Samuel Via and Lottie Sandridge Via. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Dorothy Wayland Via; two daughters, Teresa Lynn Stein and her husband, William, of Rochester, New York and Kimberly Wayland Via of Glen Allen, Virginia; three sisters, Anne Via Wayland of Charlottesville, Nancy Via Shipp (James Early) of Troy, and Beverly Via Wagner (Ralph) of Waynesboro; one brother, Walter Dabney Via (Nancy) of Crozet; and a number of nieces and nephews. Allen was employed by H.M. Gleason Company, the University of Virginia, and Monticello Foundation. He was an usher for the University of Virginia athletic events. He faithfully served as a church deacon, choir member, and in many other service ministries. A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, June 24, 2006, at First Baptist Church with Dr. Lindsay Sadler officiating. Interment will follow in Monticello Memory Gardens. The family will receive friends from 6:30 until 8 p.m. Friday, June 23, 2006, at Hill and Wood Funeral Home. ANDERSON W. VIA
Anderson W. Via a retired contractor and one of the city’s best known residents, died at 10:30 o’clock Saturday night at his home, 921 Cherry Street. Mr. Via had suffered from a form of heart trouble for the past three years. His last illness was of three weeks duration. His condition became critical early last week, and the end was not unexpected. Anderson White Via was a native of Albemarle county, having been born and reared near Nortonsville, in the northern end of the county. He was a son of the late C. Franklin Via and was sixty-one years of age. Mr. Via came to Charlottesville to make his home forty years ago. He lead quite an active business life and was a leading churchman, a deacon in the First Baptist church. He was also a member of the local lodge of Odd Fellows. Mr. Via married Miss Lena Harris, of northern Albemarle. She survives, with seven children, five sons, and two daughters – Guy F. Via, Dr. Dan O. Via and Harold A. Via of this city; Earl H. Via, at present in the employ of the DuPont plant at Wilmington, Del.; Warren W. Via, an instructor in the school at Bennettsville, S. C.; Mrs. C. S. Barr and Miss Mary V. Via, of this city. Mr. Via also leaves two brothers and three sisters – Willoughby N. Via, of this city; Charles H. Via, of Richmond; Mrs. John Rhodes. Mrs. H. I. Lupton and Mrs. J. D. Huckstep, all of this city. The funeral will be held from the First Baptist church at 3 o’clock this afternoon, the service to be conducted by the pastor, Dr. Henry Alford Porter. The interment will take place in the family section in Oakwood cemetery.

BARBOURSVILLE - Mrs. Anna Via, 62, died at her home here yesterday. Mrs. Via was born July 5, 1901, in Albemarle County, daughter of the late Lizzie Collier. She is survived by her husband Floyd Via of Barboursville; one son, Early Collier of Barboursville; four daughters, Mrs. Bessie Davidson of New Jersey, Mrs. Daisy Pritchett, Mrs. Minnie Collier, and Mrs. Addie Breeden all of Barboursville; one brother, Boggie Collier of Arlington; and 18 grandchildren. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. tomorrow at the Preddy's Funeral Home in Gordonsville. Burial will be in Maplewood Cemetery in Gordonsville.

Mrs. Barbara Elizabeth Via, 85, formerly of Waynesboro, and a resident of Augusta Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, died Friday, April 06, 2007, at the center. She was born October 1, 1921, in Heards, Virginia, a daughter of the late Joseph Wilton Toms and Nannie Baber Toms. Mrs. Via was retired from the former Crompton Shenandoah Plant at Waynesboro. She was a member of Wayne Hills Baptist Church and was a 1951 Charter member of Wayne Hills United Methodist Church. Barbara loved life, she embraced each day, loved walking and meeting people, never considering anyone a stranger. She always looked forward to her daily meeting with friends at Hardees and always enjoyed her outings with the fun bunch from Wayne Hills Baptist Church. Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Robert and Shirley Via, of Fishersville; three sisters, Mrs. Donald (Mary) Sparks of New London, New Hampshire, Mrs. Robert (Shirley) Thraves and Mrs. Willis (June) Knight, both of Barbersville, Virginia; two sisters-in-law, Mrs. Anice Toms of Charlottesville, and Mrs. Barbara Ann Lawson of Fluvanna County; one granddaughter, Mrs. Brad (Kristi) Sears of Fishersville; and one great -grandson, Jacob Sears. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Robert B.Via Jr., in 1980; a sister and brother-in-law, Pauline Toms Carver and Bradley Carver; and two brothers, Joseph (Bill) Toms and Melvin Toms. A service will be conducted 2 p.m. Tuesday, April 10, 2007, at the chapel of McDow Funeral Home, by the Reverend Danny Campbell. Burial will follow at Augusta Memorial Park. Active pallbearers will be Brad Sears, Robert Thraves, Gunther Craun, Michael Craun, Larry Zimmerman and Malcolm Campbell. Honorary pallbearers will be friends attending and Dr. James Long. The family will receive friends from 7 until 8:30 p.m. Monday, April 9, 2007, at McDow Funeral Home. Barbara V. Via, 96, of Charlottesville died peacefully on Friday, February 15, 2008 at her home. She was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas Earl Via. She was born October 30, 1911, in Earlysville, Virginia, the daughter of the late Reverend Jacob Wood and Carrie Crenshaw Via. She was also preceded in death by her brother Jacob Rice Via; sisters Martha Baugher, Elizabeth Patterson, Ruth Branham, Bettie Heflin, Rachel Allen, Gertrude Via, and Willie Jones and their respective spouses; and a baby sister, Yula. She graduated from Earlysville High School on May 28, 1929, where she was on the Debate Team, the Basketball Team, was valedictorian of her small class and wrote the class poem. She attended Harrisonburg State Teacher's College (now James Madison University) the next two years, and started teaching in 1931 in a one room schoolhouse near Fray's Mill in Albemarle County. She completed her degree over the next few summers graduating in 1938. She taught at Montvale School, taught three years in Barboursville, and for seven years at Broadus Wood Elementary, all in Albemarle County. She was married December 26, 1941, in Earlysville. During World War II she worked in an office for Glenn L. Martin, a company that built aircrafts for the war, and lived in Dundalk, Maryland, while her husband worked at the Bethlehem Steel Shipyard. In 1945 they returned to Charlottesville, where she taught several more years before starting a family. Barbara joined the Free Union Church of the Brethren as a child, where her father was a minister. As an adult, she was active in the life of the church and for years worked with the Young People's Group on Sunday nights. Since the early 1950's she has attended First United Methodist Church in Charlottesville and been a member of Circle #5. The last four years she has also attended River Road United Methodist Church in Richmond. She was a long time member of the Shadwell Home Demonstration Club and was County Chairman of the Extension Homemakers in 1986 during the 50th Anniversary celebration. She was active in PTA and other school and community events. Barbara is survived by her son, Julian Thomas Via of Salem, Virginia; a daughter Charlotte Via Allred and her husband, Fred Mark Allred Jr., of Richmond; a granddaughter, Susan Via Campbell and her husband, David Alan Campbell, of Westfield, Indiana; and great-grandchildren, Morganne Elizabeth Campbell and William Thomas Campbell. She is also survived by a stepgrandson, Kenneth Mark Allred and his wife, Wendy Behling Allred, and their two sons, Jacob and Harrison Allred of Richmond and a stepgranddaughter, Pamela Janice Allred-Irby and her husband Brian Ray Irby, and their children, Renae Allred, Marina, Ryan, William, and Mikayla Irby of Richmond. She has many nieces and nephews, as well. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Monday, February 18, 2008, at First United Methodist Church in Charlottesville with the Reverend Doctor Harry Kennon and the Reverend Kirk Nave officiating. Interment will follow at Holly Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 4 until 6 p.m. Sunday, February 17, 2008, at the Hill and Wood Funeral Home in Charlottesville. Bertha Shifflett Via, 82, of Richmond, Virginia, formerly of Free Union, Virginia, passed away Thursday, August 17, 2006. Born August 14, 1924, she was the daughter of the late William and Bessie Shifflett. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Alton Via; two sisters, Lucile Rome and Gernie Hazlett; six brothers, Pete, Roman, Roy, Elzie, Raymond and Cecil Shifflett. Bertha is survived by one daughter, Dale, and her husband, Russell Jenkins, of Richmond, Virginia; three sisters, Avis and her husband, Ollie Morris, of Charlottesville, Virginia, Dorothy and her husband, Albert Schneider, of Hopewell, Virginia, Gertie Woods of Craigsville, Virginia; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren, who were the joy of her life. Bertha was special to everyone who knew her and she loved everybody. Her hobby was taking pictures. She took her camera with her everywhere. She also loved to do needlework for everyone and working with her flowers. She always had a big smile. She will be missed by everyone who knew her. A graveside service will be conducted 11 a.m. Monday, August 21, 2006, at Sunset Memorial Park in Chester, Virginia. The family will receive friends from 2 until 4 p.m. today, at the Joseph W. Bliley Funeral Home, Chippenham Chapel in Richmond, Virginia.

Betty Jean Via, 65, of Palmyra, died Tuesday, February 10, 2009 in the Hershey Medical Center. Born in Grottoes, VA on February 25, 1943, she was the daughter of the late John and Margaret Shifflet Via. Margaret attended Palmyra High School and was a factory worker at the Hershey Foods, Inc., for 36 years. She was a member of the Chocolate Workers Union Local 464 and loved cooking, baking and spending time with her family. She is survived by brothers, John Via, Jr. of Hershey, Kenneth Via of Grantville, Richard Via of Palmyra and Steven Via of Hershey; sisters, Barbara Worman of Hale, MO, Carol Nye of Benton, and Christine Burdge of Palmyra; many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a brother, Jeffrey Via and sisters,Wanda Via and Paula Via. Funeral services will be held on Monday, February 16, 2009 at 11 a.m., from the Kreamer Funeral Home & Crematory, Inc., 618 E. Main Street, Annville. Interment will be in the Gravel Hill Cemetery, Palmyra. Viewing will take place on Sunday from 6-8 p.m., and on Monday from 10-11 a.m., at the funeral home. Carrie Lee Via, 91, died Dec. 1, 1997, at a Charlottesville hospital. She was born Jan. 11, 1906, in Crozet. She was preceded in death by her mother Eva Carter Wood; a daughter, Eunice Thurston; and her husband, Claude L. Via. She is survived by two daughters, Anne Chick of Virginia Beach, Carolyn Shifflett of Gordonsville; three grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. She was a member of Crozet Baptist Church. The family suggests donations be made to Hospice of the piedmont. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Wednesday evening at Anderson Funeral Home, Crozet. A graveside funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Rockgate Cemetery with Dr. Roy Thomas officiating.

Charlie Franklin Via, 77, of 281 N. Bayard Ave. was dead-on-arrival Saturday afternoon (Dec. 13, 1975) at Waynesboro Community Hospital. Mr. Via was born in Albemarle County March 21, 1898, son of Tyre and Sallie (Dunn) Via. He was retired, after 21 years of service, with Basic Witz Furniture Co. as a furniture finisher. Prior to working at Basic Witz, he was a farmer and caretaker of the Hopeman Estate at Sugarhollow farm near White Hall. He was a member of First Christain Church. His wife, Mrs. Eva Virginia (Garrison) Via, preceded him in death. Surviving are one son, Charlie Franklin Via Jr. of Pottstwon, Pa.; three daughters, Mrs. Juanita V. Ellis, Mrs. Katie Zimmerman and Mrs. Thelma Johnson, all of Waynesboro; one sister, Mrs. Ida V. James of Mooresville, Pa; 15 grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren, and a number of nieces and nephews. Services will be conducted 2 p.m. Tuesday in Etter Funeral Home chapel by the Rev. David M. Derrow. Burial will be in Riverview Cemetery. Christine Fay Burdge, 64, of Palmyra died Wednesday July 20, 2011 in the Harrisburg Hospital. She was the wife of the late Sherwood Dale Burdge who died in 1975. Born in Lebanon on June 7, 1947, she was the daughter of the late John W., Sr. and Margaret F. Shifflet Via. She was formerly employed by the Hershey Medical Center and was a nurses aid at the Palmyra Nursing Home. Fay formerly attended Gravel Hill United Methodist Church, Palmyra and enjoyed cooking for gatherings of family and friends. She was a dedicated mother and loved her grandchildren and extended family. Surviving are three sons Michael T. Burdge, Sr. of Lebanon, Travis S. Burdge of Grantville, David S. Burdge of Strasburg, nine grandchildren, four brothers John W. Via, Jr. of Palmyra, Richard Scott Via of Palmyra, Kenneth G. Via of Grantville, Steven M. Via of Palmyra, two sisters Barbara Worman of Hale, MO, and Carol Nye of Benton. She was preceded in death by a brother Jeffrey L. Via, and sisters Betty Via, Wanda Via, and Paula Via. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday at 11:00 AM from Gravel Hill United Methodist Church, 131 Gravel Hill Road, Palmyra with the Rev. Douglas S. Smith officiating. Interment will be in Gravel Hill Cemetery, Palmyra. Viewing will be held on Monday evening from 6-8 PM at the Kreamer Funeral Home and Crematory, 618 E. Curtis Allen “Buck” Via, 69, of Grottoes died Dec. 29, 1992, at Rockingham Memorial Hospital in Harrisonburg, where he had been a patient since Nov. 26. Mr. Via was born July 18, 1923, near Port Republic and was the son of the late Jesse and Hattie Roach Via. He was a member of the Grottoes Free Pentecostal Church and was an independent contractor. On June 15, 1947, he married the former Margaret Morris, who survives. Also surviving are two eons, Melvin F. Via of Grottoes and Curtis A. Via of New Hope; two daughters, Shirley M. Allen and Joyce A. Via, both of Grottoes; one sister, Hazel Shifflett of Grottoes; and six grandchildren. The Revs. John Morris and Homer Frazier will conduct the funeral at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Grottoes Free Pentecostal Church. Burial will be in the Port Republic Cemetery near Port Republic. Curtis Roosevelt Via, 73, of Westminster, Md., died Sunday, Sept. 7, 2008, at the Carroll Hospital Center. Mr. Via was born Oct. 27, 1934, in Augusta County, Va., and was a son of the late William King Via and Cora Belle Harris Via. He served in the Army and trained in the Signal Corps with special training as a message handler receiving top secret clearance as a cryptography operator. He was stationed in Quarry Heights U.S. Canal Zone, Panama. He is survived by his wife of 26 years, Virginia L. Via; a daughter, Mary Paul of California; a son, Martin Via of Georgia; four stepchildren, Ann Marie Brummet of Baltimore, Kathy Boone, Terry Doyle and Charles Doyle, all of Westminster; three brothers, Arnold L., Herbert H. and Chester M. Via, all of Virginia; two sisters, Shelly J. Smulsky of Virginia and Hessie I. Dailey of Ohio; 13 grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews. The funeral was held Sept. 12 at Fletcher Funeral Home in Westminster, Md.

Daniel Davis Via, 76, of Charlottesville, went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, May 14, 2008. Born on March 9, 1932, in Crozet, he was preceded in death by his son, Daniel Davis Via Jr.; and his daughters, Delores V. Fox and Dannette D. Via. He is survived by his wife of 31 years, Nancy; a sister, Louise Seale of Crozet; his daughters, Debbie Hoy and her friend, Lee Duck, of Richmond, Donna D. Via and lifetime partner, Sandra Hufford of Palmyra, Danielle D. Staton of Palmyra, Gale Chapman of Earlysville, Sheri Shifflett and her husband, Jeff, of Ruckersville, Darla Anderson and her husband, Glen, of Kents Store, Nancy Uhland of Oakton; and sons, David J. Uhland of Charlottesville and Daniel Davis Via III of Sterling. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Tonya Fox and her fianc?, Shannon Gentry, Scott Fox, Brandon Via and his wife, Jenni, Dana Hoy, Donald "Duncan"Hoy Jr., Dale Franklin and her husband, Robert, Wesley "Bubby" Martin Jr. and his fianc?, Jacqueline Payne, L.E. Also surviving him are his great-grandchildren, Makayla Gentry, Travis Allen, Kiersten Allen, Scott Fox Jr., Bradley Fox, Gavin Fielding, Kelseann Garrison, Brennon Garrison, Lane Christian, Amber Martin, Camdyn Via, Braelyn Via, Makayla Chapman, Ryan Thomas, and Carlyn Weinstein. Dan retired from the City of Charlottesville Public Works and was a member of Covenant Church of God. Dan was loved by his family and a good friend to many. Those who knew and loved him knew him by "PaPa". The family would like to thank Jimmy Dodds at Pepsi Cola for staying with his wife and assisting until the Rescue Squad arrived. David Junior Via, 78, died at his residence in Crozet on Monday, Oct. 22, 2001. He was born June 24, 1923, in Albemarle County, to the late David Via and Bessie Via Marsh. He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Frances S. Via; one daughter, Sandra Conley and her husband, Gary, of Crozet; two sons, David L. Via of Round Hill and Tony A. Via of Crozet; one brother, Hollis S. Via of Crozet; a sister, Shirley Via Tyler of Charlottesville; and three grandchildren, Richard Parr, Hank Conley, and Zachary Conley. He was preceded in death by three sisters, Catherine Stricker Kearns, Martha Fitzgerald, and Faye Dance, and one brother, Aubrey Via. He was retired from Acme visible Records and was an auto mechanic, farmer and orchardist. He was a life member of the Crozet Fire Department and served in the U.S. Army in World War II. Junior Via was an active, vital man who loved life and grabbed it by the horns each day. He could not sit still for long but had to be doing something each minute. If he was not hunting or getting ready to hunt, he was thinking about hunting. It was his passion, while farming and orchards were his life. He plowed and planted every square foot of ground he could, some for profit, some just to eat. He pruned, sprayed, picked, and marketed fruit from over 100 apple trees. He also salvaged, rigged, repaired, and maintained every old piece of farm equipment and junk machinery he could get his hands on. He could buy a totally disassembled farm tractor that had lain around in a barn for a few years, cart it home in bags and boxes, and turn it into a fully functioning work-horse. If it was broke, he could fix it. He was a loving husband, proud father, devoted grandfather, and a great friend. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. this evening at the Anderson Funeral Home Chapel in Crozet. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Crozet Baptist Church, with interment to follow in Rockgate Cemetery in Crozet. Dr. Roy S. Thomas III and Dr. Alan Thompson will officiate. GROTTOES - Dewey Ira Via Sr., 75, of Rt. 1, Grottoes died Sunday morning at Rockingham Memorial Hospital, where he had been a patient two weeks. Mr. Via was born June 25, 1906 in Albemarle County and was a son of the late Daniel W. and Melinda Sipe Via. He was a carpenter for Nielson Construction Co. six years before retiring in 1971. Mr. Via lived most of his life in Grottoes and was a member of Grottoes Church of the Brethren. On Nov. 5, 1928, he married the former Elizabeth Batton, who survives. Also surviving are two sons, Dewey I. Via Jr. and John P. Via, both of Grottoes; a daughter, Emma Jean Shifflett of Penn Laird; two sisters, Viola Lawson of Laurel, Md., and Agnes Lyons of Waynesboro; five grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. The funeral will be conducted 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Lindsey Weyers Cave Funeral Home by the Rev. E. Lee Chattin. Burial will be in East Lawn Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends at the funeral home 7:30-8:30 p.m. today.

Earl Nelson Via, 66, of Route 3, Box 496, Waynesboro, died Sunday evening (Aug. 30, 1992) in Waynesboro Community Hospital. He was born Dec. 11, 1925, in Doylesville, a son of the late Archie King and Ethel Maupin Via. He was a Navy veteran having served as a signalman on the USS Sierra and a member of the Coast Guard Auxiliary. He retired in 1986 from Genicom and, before Genicom, had worked at Crompton Co. He was owner of Viatronie Computer Service Inc. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Archie King Via Jr. and Woodson Via. Edward "Eddie" Rice Via, 74, of Troy died Sunday, February 17, 2008, at his home. Born in Alexandria, Virginia on April 26, 1933, he was the son of the late David Morgan Via and Madge Lee Bruffey Via. He was also preceded in death by his son, Mark Edward Via; one sister, Verna F. Via; two brothers, Roland M. Via and Raymond S. Via. Mr. Via was retired from the automotive industry having served as Auto Parts Manager for MacGregor Motors, Medlin and Colonial Auto Parts. He was a life time member of the Brethren church with his current membership at Charlottesville Church of the Brethren. He also had served as a Boy Scout Leader in the Earlysville area for more than 10 years. He had coached Little League Baseball and Football and had a life long love of boating. He and his wife maintained a home in Deltaville for over 35 years so that he could be closer to the water. He had been an avid camper, boater and in 1988 had received his Private Pilot License. He was a veteran of the United States Army having served in the Korean Conflict and was a member and former Commander of the Coast Guard Flotilla Auxillary. He is survived by his wife, Jean Stribling Via of Troy; one daughter, Pamela Lynne Via-Martinez of Falls Church, Virginia; two grandchildren, Nicole R. Mrs. Elizabeth Batton Via, 97, of Staunton, died at 2:00 Saturday morning, April 1, 2006, at King’s Daughters’ Health and Rehabilitation Center in Staunton. She had not enjoyed good health for the past three years. A daughter of the late Edward H. and Emma C. Marshall Batton, she was born on Sept. 17, 1908, at Mount Fair in Albemarle County, Va. Mrs. Via lived the majority of her life in the Grottoes area and was a member of the Grottoes Church of the Brethren. She had been employed by DuPlan Corp in Grottoes for three years. On Nov. 5, 1928, she married Dewey Ira Via Sr., who preceded her in death on Aug. 30, 1981. She is survived by two sons, Dewey I. Via Jr. and John P. Via, both of Grottoes, eight grandchildren; several great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. She was preceded in death by two daughters, Matile Lawson and Emma Jean Shifflett. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 Wednesday afternoon at the Grottoes Church of the Brethren with Pastor John N. NELLIE SHIFLETT WOOD VIA
Nellie Wood Via, 84, of Charlottesville, died Friday, Dec. 14, 2001 in a local nursing home. Born Feb. 26, 1917, in Boonesville, she was the daughter of the late Z and Addie Shifflett. She was also preceded in death by her first husband, James E. Wood and her second husband, Joseph Via. Survivors include her daughters, Jean W. O'Brien of Fork Union, Frances W. Staton and husband Earl C. of Richmond, and Glenna W. Shifflett and husband Frank L. of Stanardsville; two sisters, Ruby Walton of Westminster, Md., and Violet Hedgebeth of Charlottesville; five grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday at Holly Memorial Gardens, with the Rev. Sidney Craig officiating. The family will receive friends from 3 to 5 p.m. on Sunday at the funeral home. Those who wish to may make contributions to Alzheimer's Association, Charlottesville/ Piedmont Chpt. P.O. RAYMOND M. VIA
Raymond M. Via, 85, of Dayton, died Thursday, March 27, 2008, at Rockingham Memorial Hospital in Harrisonburg. He had been in failing heath for the past 2½ years. Mr. Via was born Jan. 12, 1923, in Free Union, and was the son of the late Benjamin and Angie Ward Via. He was a retired lineman at Shenandoah Valley Co-op in Dayton, where he had worked for 30 years before retiring in 1985. He attended Home Church. On Oct. 10, 1991, he married Sylvia Jean Reedy, who survives. In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son, Stephen Raymond Via of Dayton; a sister, Irene Bell of Richmond, and a number of nieces and nephews. Bobby Sylvia and Stephen Jayne will conduct the funeral 2:30 p.m. Sunday at Johnson Funeral Service in Bridgewater. Burial will follow at Woodbine Cemetery in Harrisonburg. The family will receive friends from 7-8 this evening at the funeral home.

Raymond S. Via Sr., 52, of 3718 Moody Ave., Richmond, died Tuesday. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Betty J. Via; a daughter, Mrs. Patricia C. Clay of Richmond; three sons, Raymond S. Via Jr. of Wilmington, Del., Donald E. Via and James G. Via, both of Richmond; two sisters, Miss Verna F. Via of Arlington and Mrs. Grace L. Baker of Cumberland; five brothers, David M. Via Jr. of Harrisonburg, Pa., Roland Via of Free Union, Wayne B. Via of Richmond, Edward R. Via and John F. Via, both of Earlysville; three grandsons, Donald E. Via Jr., Andrew D. Via and Brian C. Clay. Mr. Via was a retired Lieutenant with the Richmond Fire Bureau, president of the Richmond Firefighters Assoc. and Virginia Assoc. of Professional Firefighters. Remains rest at the Huguenot Chapel, Woody Funeral Home, 1020 Huguenot Road, Midlothian, where services were conducted 11 a. m. today with interment in Dale Memorial Park, Chesterfield, Va.

Reba Hayes Via, 88, of Free Union, died Tuesday, July 17, 2007, at a local hospital. Born in Augusta County, Virginia, on April 6, 1919, she was the daughter of the late Samuel Wallace and Bessie Painter Hayes. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Veluvian "Buck" A. Via; her son, Dale Via; her sisters, Violet Brooks, Virginia R. Davis, and June Hayes; her brothers, David Hayes and James Hayes; and her nephews, Bud Marks and Nathan Hayes. She was retired from Sperry Marine and was a faithful member of Wesley United Methodist Church and Free Union Church of the Brethren. Reba loved her family and found great comfort in reading the Bible and prayer. She is survived by her three daughters, Newassa and Scott Gentry of Eastham, Velma and Danny Brinkley of Palmyra, and Cathy Sullivan of Earlysville and Joel Sullivan Jr. of Elkton; 10 grandchildren, Matt, Jeremy, Megan, Joshua, Lindsey, Cody, Lauren, Marlana, Scott, and Michelle; three great-grandchildren; a sister, Mildred and Herbert Lotts of Lyndhurst; and many nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be conducted 11 a.m. Friday, July 20, 2007, at Wesley United Methodist Church of Free Union, with the Reverend Pat Mellot officiating. Interment will follow at the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 until 8 p.m. Thursday, July 19, 2007, at the Teague Funeral Home. The Rev. Jacob Wood Via, 77, of Earlysville, died yesterday at the Martha Jefferson Hospital following a brief illness. He was born June 29, 1878, in Free Union, son of the late Rice and Fannie Wood Via, and was a retired Brethren Minister, farmer and lumberman. He is survived by his wife, the former Miss Carrie Crenshaw; six daughters, Mrs. Gilbert Baugher and Mrs. Gertrude Via, of Free Union, Mrs. Guy Patterson and Mrs. T. Earl Via, of Charlottesville, and Mrs. Russell Allen and Mrs. Vernon Jones, of Earlysville; two sisters, Mrs. Paul Sanger, of Free Union, and Mrs. Conway Owens of Nokesville; five brothers, John A. Via and David M. Via, of Earlysville, Dan R. Via, of Newport News, Ben F. Via, of Free Union and Samuel Via, of Alexandria; 24 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p. m. Tuesday from the Free Union Church of the Brethren, with burial in the church cemetery. The Rev. Minor C. Miller, of Bridgewater, will officiate, assisted by the pastor, the Rev. Charles Simmons. The remains will lie in state at the church from 1:30 to 2:30 p. m.

Roland Maurice Via, 79, of Charlottesville, died Friday, June 15, 2007, at his home. Born February 2, 1928, in Alexander, Virginia, he was the son of the late David Morgan and Madge Bruffey Via. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Verna F. Via, and a brother, Raymond Via. Mr. Via retired from Conagra and was a veteran of the United States Army. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Doris Emmagene Breeden Via; two daughters, Nancy V. Teel and her husband, John, and Jo Ann Bunch and her husband, Steve; two sons, Richard Allen Via and his wife, Teresa, and Dwayne Via and his wife, Debbie; 11 grandchildren, one of whom, Jennifer Buttry, they raised; 10 great-grandchildren; one sister, Grace Baker and her husband, Bobby; and four brothers, David M. Via and his wife, Jan, Eddie Via and his wife, Jean, Wayne Via and his wife, Dorothy, and Frank Via and his wife, Brenda. Funeral services will be conducted 3 p.m. Monday, June 18, 2007, at Free Union Church of the Brethren, with the Reverend Pat Mellott officiating. Interment will follow at the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 4 until 6 p.m. Sunday, June 17, 2007, at the Teague Funeral Home. RUFUS LEE VIA
Rufus Lee Via, 88, of Sterling, died Friday, Oct. 28, 2005, at the home of his daughter in Ashburn. Mr. Via was born Oct. 19, 1917, in Sugar Hollow, Albemarle County, and was a son of the late William King (Shake) Via and Cora Belle (Harris) Via. He was a veteran of World War II and participated in the invasion of Omaha Beach, Normandy, France in 1944. He was employed at Costco Wholesale of Sterling at the time of his recent illness and death. He enjoyed bowling and fishing and participated in many fishing tournaments. In 1946, he married Phyllis Taylor. In 1956, he married Kitty Marie Williams of Grottoes, who preceded him in death in 1996. Survivors include three children, Robert K. Via of Altamonte Spring, Fla., Ellen Marie Via McLean of Ashburn and Timothy Earl Via of Winter Park, Fla.; four brothers, Arnold L. Via and Herbert H. Via of Harriston, Curtis R. Via of Westminster, Md., and Chester M. Via of Midlothian; three sisters, Alice Via Garrison of Baltimore, Md., Shelley Via Smulsky of Waynesboro and Hessie Via Dailey of Mount Vernon, Ohio; five granddaughters and a number of nieces and nephews. A memorial service was held Sunday, Oct. 30, at the Loudoun Funeral Chapel in Leesburg.

Ruth E. Via, 73, of Waynesboro died Thursday, January 8, 2004. She was the widow of Gordon Via and was born February 22, 1930 in Rockingham Co., Va. She is survived by two daughters Joann Morris of Stanardsville and Nancy Shifflett of Charlottesville; four sisters Virgie Roach and Geraldine Shifflet both of Stanardsville, Esther Lee of Charlottesville and Anne Fitzgerald of Waynesboro; one brother Dewey Morris of Stanardsville; two grandchildren; one great-grandchild and two special friends Sue Morris and Cathy Davis. Sheila Via, 94, of Charlottesville, died Tuesday, Oct. 23, 2001, at her home. Born Aug. 21, 1907, she was the daughter of the late Andrew and Sallie Estes. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Roy J. Via Sr., and two sons, Roy J. Via Jr. and Paul R. Via. She belonged to Belmont Baptist Church. Survivors include her grandson, Roy Via, and her daughter-in-law, Florence Worley-Via. A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at Belmont Baptist Church, with Rev. Gary Dalton officiating. Interment will follow at Riverview Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. this evening at Hill & Wood Funeral Home. Tony C. Via, 58, of Grottoes, passed away at his home with his family by his side Saturday morning, April 7, 2007, after a long battle with cancer. He was a devoted son, husband, father, grandfather, and great- grandfather. He was born on Sept. 1, 1948, and was a son of Violet R. and Dewey I. Via Jr. of Grottoes, who survive. On Aug. 20, 1968, he married Judy Ann Henderson, who died Dec. 15, 2004. He was retired from Reynolds Metals in Grottoes and was a member of the Harriston United Methodist Church. Besides his parents, he is survived by one daughter, Angela R.V. Thomas and husband, Edward, and one son, Roderick "Rodney" Via Sr., all of Grottoes; and one brother, Michael I. Via and wife, Kathy. Also surviving are five grandchildren, Danielle V. Butler and husband, Dustin, Brandie Via, Roderick C. "Ricky" Via Jr., Andrew and Hannah Thomas; one great-granddaughter, Serenity Butler; and a cherished friend, Monica M. McAvoy. A funeral service will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, April 12, 2007, at Johnson Funeral Service, Grottoes, with Chaplain Paul O’Gorek and Pastor Dr. Cam Carte officiating. The funeral of Walter Edward Via, north side farmer, who died Saturday night at his home at Doylesville, following an extended illness was held at 2 o’clock yesterday afternoon from Mt. Moriah Church, at White Hall. The service was conducted by the Rev. C. W. Tinsman, of Waynesboro, and interment followed in the church yard. Pallbearers were Forrest George, Charlie O’Brien and Burrell, Earl, Ernest, Robert and Vincinet Via. Honorary pallbearers indicated J. H. Via, T. O. Carr, and E. J. Lewis and Charles Sandridge. Mrs. Via was a native of Albemarle, son of James R. and Nancy Walton Via, and was 51 years of age. He married Miss Kate Maupin.

WAYNESBORO - The funeral for William King Via, 75, of Harriston will be conducted 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Etter Funeral Home here by the Rev. Ralph Hines. Burial will be in Edgewood Cemetery at Grottoes. Pallbearers will be Robert Morris, Allen Marshall, Harry, Charlie and George Shifflett, Edward Batten, Harry Humphries and Robert Breeden. The family will receive friends 7-8 p.m. today at the funeral home. Mr. Via died Sunday afternoon at Rockingham Memorial Hospital where he had been a patient a month. He was born March 31, 1893 in Albemarle County and was a son of William Alexander and Mildred A. Sandridge Via. Mr. Via was employed at Crompton-Shenandoah Co. here 15 years before his retirement in March 1961. He was a member of Waynesboro Church of God. His wife, Mrs. Cora Harris Via, survives. Also surviving are eight sons, Rufus L. Via of Annadale, James W. Via of Kansas City, Mo., Clarence W. Via of Tacoma, Wash., Arnold L. Via with the U.S. Navy aboard the S.S. American Clipper, Herbert H. and Curtis R. Via, both of Baltimore, Md., Lorenders W. Via of Crimora and Chester M. Via with the U.S. Army in Saigon, Vietnam; three daughters, Mrs. Malcom Garrison of Baltimore, Miss Shelley J. Via of Waynesboro and Mrs. Richard Hines of White Hall; two brothers, Marvin Via of Hershey, Pa. and Floyd Via of Barboursville; a sister, Mrs. Melvin Garrison of Palmyra, Pa., 27 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

YVONNE ANN VIA

After a long battle with breast cancer Yvonne Via died Sept. 7, 2010, at home with family and the support of Hospice. Yvonne was born in Plymouth, England, U.K. to Clarence and Gwendoline Via. She graduated from Clover Park H.S.1962, attended Yakima Jr. College and C.W.S.C. She worked for Boeing Co. in Auburn and Renton and was one of Boeing’s first female plant managers opening what was the new Fredrickson Plant in Pierce County. She retired in 1999 after 30 years with the company. During her life she enjoyed playing women’s softball, following the Mariners, various woodworking projects, trying her luck at various casinos and traveling in her RV with partner Barbara and many friends. She really enjoyed her trips back to England to spend time with family. She volunteered for the Special Olympics and participated in the Komen and Avon 3-Day Walk for Breast Cancer. She was always there for family and friends. Yvonne was a kind, loving and generous woman who lived every day to the fullest. She always remembered everyone’s birthday, even the youngest of great nieces and nephews. Her family will always hold a special place in their hearts for the loving care she received from Barbara, her devoted partner of 32 years, her niece Karen Hadley and Hospice Nurse Matt. Yvonne is survived by her partner Barbara Pinney, sister Violet Boe, sister Elaine Bouscher and husband John, brother Eugene Via and partner Valarie Bailie, niece Karen Hadley, husband Mark and daughter Quinna, nephew Ron Boe and partner Lori Kennedy , Brett Boe and wife Nan, niece Holly Gorski and husband Corey, nephew Charlie Via, Kenneth Via and wife Buffy, niece Stephanie Bouscher, Carolyn Rich and husband Jeff . Graveside Services will be at: Mountain View Cemetery – Lakewood, WA. Saturday, September 18, 2010 @ 2:30 pm.
