AUBREY CALVIN RAYNES
Aubrey Calvin "Cal" Raynes, 78, of New Carrollton, Md., died Monday, March 7, 2005, at his home. Mr. Raynes was born July 23, 1926, in the Lynnwood community of Rockingham County, and was a son of the late E. Lester and Eva Mobray Raynes. He was a sales manager for B&B Automotive and was a Navy veteran of World War II. In June 1950, he married Janet Marie McCallister, who survives. In addition to his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Rebecca Raynes of New Carrollton; three sons, Gregory Calvin Raynes of Riverdale, Md., Henry Clay Raynes of Deale, Md., and Timothy Lee Raynes of Greenbelt, Md.; two sisters, Laura Mathis of New Market and Salley Jensen of Grottoes; two brothers, Daniel Raynes of Charlottesville and Luther "Pat" Raynes of Harrisonburg; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. The Rev. Jason Raynes will conduct the funeral 1 p.m. Friday at Johnson Funeral Service in Grottoes, where the family will receive friends from noon to 1 p.m. Friday. JOHN WILLIAM RAYNES JR.
John William Raynes Jr., 59, of 7565 Dunston Drive, Hayes, Va., died unexpectedly on Wednesday morning, April 5, 2006, at his home. John was born Sept. 15, 1946, in Rockingham County, Va., the son of John William Sr. and Bertha Morris Raynes. After serving four years with the U.S. Navy as a dental technician, he attended James Madison University receiving a B.S. Degree with concentrations in English and Dramatic Arts. In 1973, he began his career at Gloucester High School as an English teacher. In 1975, he became the director of the Drama Department at Gloucester High School. He taught for over 32 years in that position and was the Chairman of the Gloucester High School Fine Arts Department at the time of his death. John was very active in the community having helped organize the Middle Peninsula Community Concert Association and served as their staging and technical director for 27 years. He was also a member of the Peninsula Community Theatre Board of Directors for over 25 years and served as the Secretary of the Board for over 15 years. During John’s 30-year affiliation with PCT, he directed over 30 productions, served as the Lighting Chair for over 20 years. He was instrumental in the re-organization of PCT. He designed and oversaw the renovations of the Village Theatre, PCT’S current home. John was the Co-Chair of the Season Membership Committee and served as the Co-Chair of the Children’s Theatre Wing of PCT. John was preceded in death by his father, John W. Raynes Sr. and is survived by his mother, Bertha M. Raynes, a resident of Loyalton of Harrisonburg, 2101 Dreyerle Ave., Harrisonburg, Va. 22801. He is also survived by long time friend, Howard L. Hollingsworth, several aunts, uncles, cousins, loving friends and a host of former students. A private interment will be held at Eastlawn Memorial Gardens in Harrsionburg, Va. A celebration of his life will be held at a later date. JOHN WILLIAM RAYNES SR.
John William Raynes Sr., 85, formerly of Port Republic, died Thursday, June 16, 2005, at Rockingham Memorial Hospital in Harrisonburg, where he had been a patient for the past week. Mr. Raynes was born Nov. 13, 1919, in Port Republic, and was the son of the late Jacob Franklin and Gertie Morris Raynes. He served in the Army Air Force during World War II and was a member of the American Legion. He was a member of Mill Creek Church of the Brethren and retired from Reynolds Metal in Grottoes as a safety engineer. Survivors include his wife, Bertha Mae Morris Raynes of Loyalton of Harrisonburg; a son, John William Raynes Jr. of Gloucester; and a brother, Douglas F. Raynes of Harrisonburg. The Rev. A. Lee Kinsey will conduct a private graveside service today at Eastlawn Memorial Gardens. Arrangements are by the Kyger Funeral Home in Harrisonburg.

JULIA KATHLEEN RAYNES VIA
Julia "Kathleen" Raynes Via, 74, of Baltimore, Md., and formerly of Port Republic, died Sunday, Sept. 15, 2002, at Manicure Ruxton Nursing Home in Towson, Md. Mrs. Via was born Feb. 28, 1928, in Port Republic, and was a daughter of the late James and Julia Shifflett Raynes. She graduated from Port Republic High School and was a homemaker. She lived her early life in Port Republic and had lived in Baltimore, Md. since 1950. In May 1947, she married Herbert H. Via of Grottoes, who survives. Also surviving are three sons, Larry Via, Randy Via, and Ricky Via, all of Baltimore, Md.; a daughter, Donna Gross of Hampstead, Md.; two sisters, Edith Brown of Lancaster, Pa., and Betty Smith of Grottoes; six grandchildren; five great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Mrs. Rosa Lee Weaver will conduct a graveside service 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Port Republic Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 to 9 this evening at the Lindsey Weyers Cave Funeral Home.

KENNETH WAYNE RAYNES
Kenneth Wayne Raynes, 53, of Elkton, died July 13, 2005, at the University of Virginia Medical Center in Charlottesville. Mr. Raynes was born December 4, 1951, in Elkton, and was the son of Minnie Jerleen Shifflett Raynes of Elkton, and the late Lewis Randolph Raynes. He was a 1970 graduate of Montevideo High School and was self-employed. He enjoyed hunting and fishing and was an avid NASCAR fan. On July 11, 1971, he married Teresa Campbell Raynes, who survives. Besides his mother and wife, he is survived by a son, Kenneth W. Raynes Jr., Elkton; a brother, Lewis R. (Randy) Raynes Jr., Elkton; a sister, Wanda Weaver, Mount Crawford; two grandchildren, Natalie P. Raynes, Lillian C. Raynes. Mr. Raynes was preceded in death by a brother, Donnie Lee Raynes. The family will receive friends tonight (Friday) 6 to 8 p.m. at the Kyger Funeral Home in Elkton. Friends may also call at the Raynes home at any time. Funeral services and burial will be private. LAURA MAE RAYNES MATHIAS
Laura Raynes Mathias, 84, of New Market died Thursday, Feb. 28 at Rockingham Memorial Hospital. Mrs. Mathias was born March 16, 1923, in Lynnwood, Va., and was the daughter of the late Lester Lee and Eva Mowbray Raynes. She graduated from Port Republic High School in 1940 and enrolled in Rockingham Memorial Hospital's School of Nursing, where she was a member of the Nurses' Cadet Corps during World War II and a member of the RMH Class of 1945. She worked as a Registered Nurse (RN) at Rockingham Memorial Hospital and Garfield Memorial in Washington, D.C. She retired to raise her children and in later years, she worked as an RN at Sunnyside and as an office nurse for Dr. A.W. Graves in Lacey Springs, Va. On Aug. 16, 1946, she married Charles E. Mathias, who preceded her in death on Jan. 23, 1986. She is survived by four daughters, Susan Mathias Smith, Cheryl Long (Ron), Deborah Kipps (Douglas), Barbara Kipps (Dwight); six grandchildren, Kristine Long Amidon, Katrina Long Gerald (Vu), Angela Kipps Shifflett (James), Lee Kipps, Alisha Kipps, Ashton Kipps; two great-grandchildren, Sabrina Gerald and Russell Gerald and one brother, Luther "Pat" Raynes. She was preceded in death by three brothers, Calvin Raynes, Danny Raynes, and Tom Tyler Raynes; and a sister, Sally Jensen. She became a member of Manor Memorial United Methodist Church in New Market, Va., in 1946 and served as a Sunday school teacher, was a member of the Women Society of Christian Service, and sang in the choir, She had many varied interests which included reading, taking care of her pets, going to church, and especially spending time with her family. She and her late husband often vacationed with extended family to the beach, and they gathered together every Sunday after church for lunch. She was an excellent cook who kept the kitchen full of candy for the kids and no one made more buttery mashed potatoes, better gravy, or sweeter iced tea. Family visitation will be held on Saturday, March 1, from 7 to 8:00 p.m. at the Theis Funeral Home in New Market, Virginia. The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. on Sunday, March 2, at the Manor Memorial United Methodist Church in New Market. The Rev. Keith Mottley will officiate. Burial will follow at the Emmanuel Cemetery. Friends and relatives may call any time of the home of Ron and Cherie Long, Quail Lane, New Market. Lewis Randolph Raynes, 77, Elkton, died Wednesday, Dec. 17, 2003, at his home after battling cancer for two years. Mr. Raynes was born June 7, 1926, near Lynwood in Rockingham County and was the son of the late Jacob Franklin and Grace Randall Raynes. He retired from Hollister, Inc., in Stuarts Draft and was a member of the Grace Memorial Episcopal Church. His wife, Minnie Jerleen Shifflett Raynes, survives. Also surviving are two sons, Kenny Raynes and Lewis R. Raynes Jr., both of Elkton; a daughter, Wanda Weaver of Mount Crawford; two sisters, Eula Dean of Elkton and Agnes Breeden of Mount Sidney; two grandchildren and one great-grandchild. The Revs. Stuart Wood and Dickie Campbell will conduct the funeral 1 p.m. Saturday at Grace Memorial Episcopal Church in Lynwood. Burial will be in the Mount Olivet Cemetery in McGaheysville. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. at the Kyger Funeral Home in Elkton. Friends also may call at the Raynes home at any time. Lewis Randolph “Randy” Raynes Jr., 51, of Elkton, died Nov. 26, 2008, at Rockingham Memorial Hospital. Randy was born Aug. 4, 1957, in Harrisonburg, and was the son of Minnie (Jerleen) Shifflett Raynes of Elkton, and the late Lewis R. Raynes. Randy was a 1975 graduate of Montevideo High School and was a big sports fan; the football Redskins, the baseball Cardinals and NASCAR’s Mark Martin were his favorites. Besides his mother, Randy is survived by a daughter, Amanda Morris, Elkton; a sister, Wanda Weaver and husband, Buddy, Mount Crawford; sister-in-law, Teresa Raynes; a nephew, Kenny Raynes and wife, Jennifer; great-nieces, Natalie and Lilly Raynes; special friends, Richard Shank and wife, Sharon, Hobart Cressler, Gaither Hurt, all of Elkton. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Kenneth Wayne Raynes, Donnie Lee Raynes. A funeral service will be held 3 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 29, 2008, at the Kyger Funeral Home in Elkton. The Rev. Stuart Wood, the Rev. Clyde Plum and Dan Breeden will conduct the service. The family will receive from 2 to 3 p.m. Saturday and following the service at the funeral home. Friends may call at the Raynes home at any time. At his request, Randy will be cremated and burial will be private at Mount Olivet Cemetery in McGaheysville. Warren David Raines, 31, of Route 1, Ruckersville, died June 7, 1991, at the University of Virginia Medical Center in Charlottesville. Mr. Raines was born Jan. 26, 1960, and was a son of Lola Shifflett Raines of Ruckersville and the late Edward Raines. Surviving, in addition to his mother, are four sisters, Madeline Shifflett and Doris Jean Deane, both of Stanardsville, Juraine Shifflett of Earlysville and Wilma Bartley of Staunton; five brothers, Edward, Judgie and Michael Raines, all of Ruckersville, Wayne Raines of Stanardsville and Wesley Raines of Waynesboro. The Rev. Edwin “Buzzy” Deane will conduct the funeral at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Ryan Funeral Home in Quinque. Burial will be at Ruckersville Cemetery. The family will receive friends 6-8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

WILLIAM LARRY RAYNES
William Larry "Larry" Raynes, 65, of Lynnwood, died Sunday morning, Feb. 8, 2004, in his home. He was born Oct. 23, 1938, in Rockingham County, and was a son of the late John Franklin and Aretta Morris Raynes. He was employed as a mechanic at Rule VW for about 10 years, owned and operated Larry’s VW and Foreign Car Repair in Grottoes, and was lastly employed by Weyers Cave Mobil. On April 21, 1959, he married the former Irene Myers, who survives. In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, William Larry "W.L." and Sally Raynes Jr. of Harrisonburg and Jonathan Ellis and Donna Raynes of Port Republic; two daughters and one son-in-law, Penny Elizabeth Raynes of Weyers Cave and Tonya R. and Tommy Thompson of Grottoes; five granddaughters, Nicole, Rachel, Katherine "Lainey", Chase, and Jordan; one grandson, Preston; and one sister and brother-in-law, Doris and Sidney A. Morris Sr. of Grottoes. A number of nieces, great nieces, nephews and great nephews also survive. He was preceded in death by one brother, Earl Franklin Raynes, who died Nov. 19, 1965. Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday, Feb. 11, 2004, at 2 p.m. in the Mount Olive Brethren Church in Pineville by the Rev. Fredric G. Miller. Burial will be in the Port Republic Cemetery. The family will receive friends Tuesday evening from 7 to 8 at the Kyger-Pence Funeral Home near McGaheysville. Memorial contributions may be made to either the Grottoes Rescue Squad, P.O.
