ALISTEEN S. MARSHALL
Alisteen S. (Alice) Marshall, 71, of 65 Morningside Drive in Mount Sidney, was reunited in Heaven with her beloved husband and Jesus on April 19, 2008. Born June 18, 1936, in Augusta County, she was a daughter of the late Charles O. and Carrie (Weaver) Simmons. On September 28, 1957, she was united in marriage to the love of her life, Boyd H. "Bunk" Marshall, with whom she shared a blessed union prior to his death on March 3, 2007. Mrs. Marshall was employed for 37 years as a Quality Assurance Inspector by American Safety Razor until her retirement in 1991. Fondly known as "Nanny" by her family and friends she was a woman who possessed great strength of faith and was a devoted member of Crossroads Baptist Church in Fishersville. She loved to cook, collect dolls and spend time with those who were close to her. She was a loving mother to her only daughter, Malinda Kaye Eavers and her husband, Michael Thomas (Tommy/Spanky) Eavers who survive her. Also surviving are two granddaughters, Amber Beth Eavers and Ashley Lynn Eavers, whom she cherished; a sister, Dorothy Shover of Staunton and three brothers, Leo Simmons of Maryland, Marvin Simmons of Staunton and Charles O. Simmons, Jr. of Roanoke; a special niece, Patty Marshall Campbell of Grottoes and a very special and loving sister-in-law, Vera Lee Bowman of McGaheysville. A Graveside Service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday April 23, 2008 at Eastlawn Memorial Gardens, Harrisonburg, followed by a Celebration of Life Service at 11:30 a.m. in Crossroads Baptist Church, 3100 Crossroads Lane, Fishersville, with Pastor Bill Johnson officiating. Fellowship will follow. Active pallbearers will be Dude Western, Donnie Halterman, Bob Hanna, John Eavers, Jeremy Eavers and Jeremy Johnson. Honorary pallbearers will be members of Crossroads Baptist Church. The family will receive friends from 7:00 to 8:30 P.M., on Tuesday, April 22, 2008, at the Waynesboro Chapel of Reynolds Hamrick Funeral Homes, 618 West Main Street. ARLINE MARGARET MARSHALL MUNDY
Arline Margaret Marshall Mundy, 94, of Stanardsville, died Sunday, May 18, 2003, at Evergreene Meadows in Stanardsville. Mrs. Mundy was born Dec. 15, 1908, and was the daughter of the late Robert Clark and Gertrude Vernon Marshall. She grew up in Dyke and joined Mount Olivet Christian Church. She graduated from Blue Ridge School in 1926. She attended Shenandoah College in Dayton for two years and Bridgewater College for one year. She graduated from Madison College in 1941 and taught in Norton for a year and at Keezletown Elementary School for 30 years. Mrs. Mundy was a member of the Harrisonburg First Church of the Brethren for more than 50 years. On Aug. 8, 1930, she married Theodore Wampler Mundy and moved to the Shenandoah Valley. She lived in Harrisonburg from 1948 until July of 1999, when she became a resident of Evergreene Meadows. Survivors include a daughter, Maxine Mundy Ritchie of Harrisonburg and Yellowstone National Park, Wyo.; a brother, Robert D. Marshall of Dyke; four grandchildren; six great-grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews. Burial will be at Mount Olivet Cemetery at a later date. Arrangements are by Ryan Funeral Home in Quinque.

Mrs. Bertie J. Marshall, 85, of Dyke, died Sunday in a Charlottesville hospital. She was a native of Greene County and a member of the Mt. Olive Christian Church. She is survived by a foster son, Orvin Shifflett of Earlysville; four foster daughters, Mrs. Goldie C. Root of Barboursville, Mrs. Nevada S. Starkie of Baltimore, Md., Mrs. Hazel Herring of Dyke and Mrs. Doris Richards of Ruckersville and 14 grandchildren. Services will be Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Mt. Olive Christian Church with burial in the church cemetery, the Rev. Silas Maddern officiating. Arrangements are by Ryan-Estes Funeral Home. Blanche Marshall Cook, 90, passed away peacefully Friday, March 28, 2008. Born in Charlottesville, Virginia, on August 30, 1917, she was the daughter of the late Cecil Phillips Marshall and Robert Lee Marshall. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dan H. Cook Sr.; and son, John F. Cook; six brothers; George, Virgil, Tom, Willie, Lynton and Fulton; and two sisters, Viola and Eva. Blanche is survived by her son, Dan H. Cook Jr. and his wife, Sandra; her daughter-in-law, Darlene K. Cook; three grandchildren, Forrest Ray Cook, Karen Sue Cook and Dan H. Cook III; and three great-grandchildren, Johnathan, Heather and Bryan. She is also survived by her two sisters, Louise M. North and Lottie M. Buck; along with numerous nieces and nephews. She was retired from the Charlottesville City School System. The family will receive friends from 7 until 8 p.m. Sunday, March 30, 2008, at Hill and Wood Funeral Home. The funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Monday, March 31, 2008, at Hill and Wood Chapel, with Dr. Rick Sadler officiating. Burial will follow at Alberene Cemetery. Blanche Taylor Marshall, 82, of Madison passed away Saturday, August 23, 2003, at a Culpeper Hospital. She was born August 20, 1920, in Madison County, daughter of the late Willie Guy and Bessie Kirtley Taylor, her husband was the late Clarence B. Marshall, she was also preceded in death by five brothers and five sisters. She is survived by a daughter, Maxine Beverly of Bedford, Va.; three sons, Bobby F. Marshall and wife Mary of Stanardsville, Charles B. Marshall and wife Alice of Madison, and Edwin Wayne Marshall and wife Pat of Barboursville; seven grandson, Percy Beverly, Mark Beverly, Keith Beverly, Charles Marshall, Anthony Marshall, Chris Marshall, and Robbie Marshall, a granddaughter, Stephanie Anderson, 14 great-grandchildren, two great great-grandchildren, a sister, Lizzie Taylor of Madison also survives. Funeral service will be held 1 p.m., Tuesday, August 26, 2003, at Ryan Funeral Chapel in Quinque, with Pastor Jeffrey Shifflett officiating, interment will be in the Shiloh Brethren Cemetery. BOYD H. MARSHALL
Boyd H. (Bunk) Marshall, 71, of 13 Loop Circle went to be with Jesus on March 3, 2007 following a brief illness. He was born April 2, 1935 at University of Virginia Hospital in Charlottesville to the late Melvin and Mae Sampson Marshall. Mr. Marshall proudly served in the United States Army from October 14, 1954 to October 6, 1956 during the Korean Conflict. He spent the early years of his life as a truck driver for D. M. Connor in Stuarts Draft. He later retired to farm, a hobby a he truly enjoyed. He was a member of Central Point Christian Church in Waynesboro. On September 28, 1957, he married the "love of his life" Alisteen Simmons, who survives him. He was also a loving father to his only daughter, Malinda "Kaye" Eavers and son-in-law, Michael Thomas "Tommy" Eavers. He is also survived by two granddaughters, Amber Beth and Ashley Lynn Eavers who were the "rays of sunshine in his life". Also surviving is a special loving sister, Vera Lee Bowman of McGaheysville, a brother, Richard Marshall of Waynesboro and a special niece Patty Marshall Campbell of Grottoes. He was preceded in death by his brother and closest friend, Allen Marshall and another brother, Frank Marshall. A celebration of his life will be conducted at 11:00 AM Thursday, March 8, 2007 at Reynolds Funeral Service of Waynesboro by Pastor James Joyner. Buford Earl Melone Marshall went to be with the Lord on Nov. 12, 2004, at the Ruxton Health Care Center at the Village in Fork Union. Buford was born on April 25, 1906, to Lena Cole and Finks Pemberton Melone and was the third of four children. She was married to John Franklin Marshall from 1925 until his death on Dec. 18, 1963. She was also preceded in death by her only child, John F. Marshall, Jr. Survivors are her daughter-in-law, Joy C. Marshall, of Charlottesville; her grand-daughter, Sharon Lee Marshall Davis, and her husband, Michael, of Duncan, Oklahoma; her grand-son, Kevin S. Marshall, of Charlottesville; and two great-grand-daughters, Allison and Catherine Henrietta of Fluvanna. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews, and many friends. A graveside service will be Nov. 15, 2004, at 11 a.m. at Monticello Memory Gardens. Cecil Cole Marshall, 65, of Charlottesville died on Tuesday, September 30, 2008, while working at St. Margaret's Farm in Cobham. Born July 27, 1943, in Suffolk, Virginia, he was the son of Virginia Cole Marshall of Charlottesville and the late Harvey Marshall. He was also preceded in death by two brothers, Bobby Marshall and Jimmy Marshall. Cecil was the owner/operator of Marshall and Sons General Contractors for many years. He loved farming and was a long time member of Buffalo Trail Riders. He was a loving husband, father, and grandfather who would have laid down his life for his family and friends. Surviving him are his wife of 47 years, Charlotte Ann Marshall of Charlottesville; a daughter, Tammy Gilmer and her husband, Timothy, of Charlottesville; a son, Jeffery Marshall and his wife, Margaret, of Charlottesville; five grandchildren, Ashlee Gilmer and her fianc?, Andy, Meaghan Shifflett and her husband, T. Charles Henry Marshall, 85, of Rio Road, died today in a Charlottesville Hospital. He was the son of the late Fannie Marshall and George F. Marshall. He was a retired farmer and a member of the Batesville Methodist Church. Surviving are his wife, Mary Frances Marshall; three sons, Charles Marshall of Hialeah, Fla., Lewis Marshall of Afton and George Early Marshall of Charlottesville; four daughters, Mrs. Marshall Tomlin of Faber and Mrs. Gadys Graves. Mrs. Hannah Gibson and Mrs. Daisy Gibson of Afton; a stepson, George Fitch of Charlottesville; two half-brothers, Robert E. and Thomas J. David Howard Marshall, Jr., 68, of Martinsburg, West Virginia, died Monday, July 17, 2006. He was born October 15, 1937, in Ruckersville, Virginia, a son of the late David Howard Marshall and Bertha Roberts Marshall. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his daughter, Paula Jane Marshall; and his brother, John Tavner Marshall. He is survived by three sisters, Eleanor Pace of Ruckersville, Virginia, Jane Haney of Richmond, Virginia, and Joyce Taylor of Stanardsville, Virginia. Mr. Marshall served in the United States Army and worked with gas pipelines for a number of years. He loved sports especially baseball. Mickey Mantle was one of his favorite players. He was a member of Spring Hill Baptist Church. A graveside service will be held 2 p.m. Thursday, July 20, 2006, at Springhill Baptist Church Cemetery with the Rev. Dan Carlton officiating. Emma Marie Marshall, 77, of Stanardsville went to her eternal home on Tuesday, December 16, 2008, from her daughter's home with her family around her when she left. She was born April 23, 1931, in Charlottesville, the daughter of the late Whitfield Morris and Susie Ellen Shifflett Morris. She was also preceded in death by her sister, Dorothy Ellen Morris, and three half siblings, Howard, Louise and Vergie Morris, and her former husband, Elie W. Marshall whom she was married to for over 40 years. Emma leaves to cherish her memories, her daughter, Joyce Marshall of Stanardsville; grandchildren, Valerie and Vanessa Thacker; a special grandson-in-law, Chris Thacker; special great- grandchildren, Derek, Jenna and Daniel Thacker, Matthew Roach, Heather and Hillary Thacker whom Emma had a big part in raising; great-great-grandchildren, Andrew Thacker and Landon Alther; a nephew who was like a son to her, Harold Morris; a great-nephew, Harold Rodney Morris; a great niece, Ashley Renee Morris; and a brother, David Morris. Emma will be greatly missed by all her family. The family wants to thank Neicie Mooney for granting Emma wish to have her at home, and a special sister-in-law for all of her love and care given. The former localite died Monday night in Columbus, after a six-month illness. Mr. Marshall was born Sept 22, 1892, at Charlottesville, Va. Gladys Marie Marshall Blackwell, 83, of 435 Old White Bridge Rd., died at Augusta Medical Center at 9:57 AM on Wednesday, August 30, 2005. Mrs. Blackwell was born June 15, 1922 in Augusta County, the daughter of the late James Robert and Esther Anne Humphreys Marshall. She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Waynesboro and was employed by the former Morton`s Frozen Foods in Crozet. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Luther (Sonny) Blackwell, two brothers, James Robert Marshall, Jr. and Fulton (Oscar) Marshall, Sr. and two sisters, Virginia Sophia Marshall and Lucy Christine Morris. Harry Lee Marshall, 72, of Charlottesville, passed away Friday, Jan. 30, 2004, at Martha Jefferson Hospital following a brief illness. Born October 18, 1931, in Charlottesville, he was the son of the late Joseph Andrew Marshall and Mamie Herring Marshall. He was also preceded in death by three brothers, Willard Marshall, Gaines A. Marshall and George W. Marshall; and a nephew, Lewis Marshall. Harry was a graduate of William Monroe High School; he served with the United States Navy and retired after 30 years of service as a Detective with the Charlottesville Police Department, and was a partner of Marshall Hairstylists. He was a Charter member of the Thompson Hall Lodge # 5 FOP where he was a Past-President; a Life Member of the BPOE #389 and served as a past trustee; he was a member of the Loyal Order of Moose Lodge # 1028 since 1974, a member of the American Legion Post #74; and a member of the Young Business Men's Association; and a member of the Church of Our Saviour Episcopal Church. He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Sally Franklin Marshall of Charlottesville; his son, Charles "Chuck" E. Marshall and his wife, Sandie, of Charlottesville; his daughter, Barbara "Barbi" M. Morris and her husband, Jim, of Palmyra; a brother Walter L. Marshall and his wife, Marie, of Lexington; four grandchildren, Tiffany Ann Marshall, Nicholas A. Morris, Danielle A. Morris and Scott D. Henry Moten Marshall, age 81, of 207 North Magnolia Avenue, Waynesboro, passed away Saturday April 18, 2009 at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Salem, VA. He was born May 31, 1927 to James Robert Sr. and Esther Anne Humphrey Marshall at Harriston, VA. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army. He attended Augusta County Schools and was a former employee of Pepsi Cola Bottling Co., Shop & Save Supermarket and Kroger. He was a founding and active member of Central Point Christian Church, having served as treasurer for many years. He was preceded in death by his parents, three sisters, Lucy Christine Morris, Gladys Marie Blackwell, Virginia Sophia Marshall, two brothers, James Robert Marshall, Jr., Fulton Marshall, two nieces and one nephew. He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Violet Fisher Marshall of the home; two sons, Seth Bailey Marshall of Missoula, Montana and Major Lane Burton Marshall, serving with the U.S. Army in Iraq and his wife Tammy and their sons. Herbert Marshall Via, 85, of Harriston, died Monday, Aug. 25, 2003, at his home. Mr. Via was born May 10, 1918, in Rockingham County, and was the son of the late Oscar and Attor Elizabeth Wood Via. He attended Mount Bethel United Methodist Church and was a carpenter. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in France and Germany. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and lived in Orlando, Fla., and Anchorage, Alaska, for several years. Survivors include a sister, Eilar Via Humphries of Grottoes, and a number of nieces and nephews. The Rev. Lawrence Frye will conduct a graveside service 2 p.m. Thursday at the Edgewood Cemetery near Mount Meridian. Arrangements are by Kyger-Pence Funeral Service in McGaheysville.

Hunter Ray Marshall, 46, went to be with the Lord and the ones that went before him in the early morning hours of Monday, August 25, 2008, after a short but tough battle with cancer. Ray was born July 7, 1962, in Charlottesville, Virginia. He was the Service Director at Jim Price Chevrolet for 14 years. Ray loved the outdoors and was an avid hunter and fisherman. He was dedicated to Tracey, his wife of 18 years and their 15 year old daughter, Brittany. His last two big adventures were a cruise with his wife to Costa Rica in March and a trip to Florida in July to watch his daughter fast pitch in a softball world series at Disney World. Ray was preceded in death by his dear mother, Shirley Batten, in August 2006. He leaves to cherish his loving memory a large family and extended family that includes father and stepmother, Hunter and Leanna Marshall, step-father, Harrison Batten; siblings, David Marshall, Glenda Marshall, Becky Oakerson, and Darlene Cummings; mother and father- -in-law, John and Anne Klueg, and their families, as well as many other friends and loved ones. He warmly touched the lives of many and the family would like to express their gratitude for the many visits, phone calls, and expressions of love and support over the past few months. We would also like to thank and express our appreciation for the medical teams of Dr. Gordon Morris, Dr. John Morris, Dr John McGovern, and the nursing staff of MJH South 7. Everyone provided excellent loving care and support as Ray fought the great fight and we are most grateful. James Franklin Marshall, 82, of 1600 6th Street, died Tuesday, August 11, 1987 in a local nursing home. He was born November 26, 1904 in Charlottesville, son of the late Wesley L. Marshall and Lula Garrison Marshall. He was the husband of the late Julia Collins Marshall. Surviving are one daughter, Mrs. Jynetta M. Thomlin of Gordonsville; one son, Jacob D. Marshall and daughter-in-law, Mrs. Annie Lee Marshall, both of Charlottesville; eight grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Mrs. Joyce M. Saunders. Mr. Marshall retired in 1974 from his position as Heating Plant operator at the University of Virginia after 10 years of service; prior to joining UVa. he was a loom operator with Charlottesville Woolen Mills and a member of the University Baptist Church. Funeral services will be held 11:30 Saturday at the Hill and Wood Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Keith Smith officiating. Interment will be in Holly Memorial Gardens. James Thomas Marshall, retired Greene County farmer, died yesterday morning in a local hospital. He was a native of Greene, son of the late William Ernest and Frances Hensley Marshall, and was 81 years of age. Besides his wife, the former Miss Lillie Herring, he is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Helen Armentrout, of Harrisonburg, and five sons, William and Elmer Marshall of Profit, and Hugh and Vernie Marshall of this city. There are 15 grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Mr. Marshall also leaves one brother, Joseph A. Marshall, of this city, and three sisters, Mrs. Kathleen Courtney, of Centreville, Fairfax County, and Mrs. Edna Hensley and Mrs. Linda Rittenour, both of Alexandria. The funeral will be held at 2 o’clock tomorrow afternoon from Chestnut Grove Church, near Earlysville, the service to be conducted by the Rev. Cecil G. Carter, of this city. Burial will follow in the churchyard. The remains will lie in state at the family home near Stanardsville until 1:30 o’clock tomorrow afternoon.

James Vernie Marshall, 86, of Charlottesville died Tuesday, April 22, 2008, at his home. Born October 10, 1921, in Greene County, Virginia, he was the son of the late James Thomas Marshall and Lillie Herring Marshall. He was also preceded in death by two sisters, Helen Armentrout and Ethel Haney; and four brothers, William, Joseph, Hughes, and Elmer Marshall. Mr. Marshall was retired with 30 years of service from the University of Virginia as an Elevator Mechanic then later Supervisor. He was an avid hunter and camper, previously attended Mt. View Baptist Church, and had served in WW II in the United States Army during the Pacific Campaign in the Philippines. Surviving him are his wife of 59 years, Pearl Marshall of Charlottesville; four daughters, Helen Marshall of Charlottesville, Ethel Hutchinson and her husband, Bill, of Gordonsville, Shirley Irving and her husband, Steve, of Gordonsville, and Rachel Collier and her husband, Tommie, of Crozet; three sons, Jimmy Marshall and his wife, Linda, of Scottsville, Kenny Marshall of Keswick, and Melvin Marshall and his wife, Teresa, of Scottsville; 16 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. He loved his family and thoroughly enjoyed his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. John Tavner Marshall, 70, of Ruckersville, died Friday, March 19, 2004, at his home. He was born April 30, 1933, in Ruckersville, a son of the late David Howard and Bertha Roberts Marshall. He was preceded in death by his son, Tavner H. Marshall and a granddaughter, Morgan Kendall Shifflett. He leaves to cherish his memory, his wife of 47 years, Ann Cason Marshall; two daughters, Teresa Gilbert and her husband, Frank, of Afton, La Verne Shifflette and her husband, Glen of Stanardsville; one daughter, Jessica Gilbert of Evinton, Va.; two grandsons, Arron Gilbert of Richmond, Matthew Shifflett of Stanardsville; three sisters, Joyce Taylor of Stanardsville, Eleanor Pace of Ruckersville and Jane Haney and her husband, Harol of Richmond; and one brother, David H. Marshall of Martinsburg, W.Va. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. He worked for the F.A.A. as a mechanic for 35 years before retiring in 1999. He was an active cattle farmer and enjoyed farming. A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, at Spring Hill Baptist Church, with the Rev. Dan Carlton officiating. Ladys Marshall Graves, 94, of Crozet passed away on Wednesday, May 14, 2008, at Winterhaven Assisted Living in Charlottesville, Virginia. Born on August 23, l913, in Batesville, she was the daughter of the late Charles H. and Lizzie S, Marshall. She was preceded in death by her husband, A. Leslie Graves Sr.; an infant daughter; two sons, A. Leslie Graves Jr. and Kenneth C. Graves; two sisters, Alma Tomlin and Daisy Gibson; and four brothers, Leonard, William, Gordon, and Lewis Marshall; and two great-great-grandchildren. She is survived by one daughter, Anne G. Hunter of Virginia Beach, Virginia; one son, Bobby D. Graves and his wife, Barbara, of Afton; one sister, Hannah Gibson; and one half brother, George E. Marshall and his wife, Eleanor, both of Charlottesville; two daughters-in-law, Helen C. Graves of Sanford, North Carolina and Mary P. Graves of Nellysford; 13 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews with a special niece that she called her oldest daughter, Barbara Bradshaw of Crozet. She joined the Batesville Methodist Church on August 2, 1925. She enjoyed being a homemaker, but worked outside the home at times, she worked at C.H. Williams, Sears, and Conagra, and she cared for the elderly at their homes. She had great faith and was a gentle and caring person. She had a love for her garden and her flowers. She crocheted beautifully and gave many items to her family and friends. The family would like to express their appreciation to the Staff at Winterhaven and Hospice of the Piedmont for their loving care. Margaret Ann Marshall, 59, of Charlottesville, died Monday, Dec. 23, 2002, at her residence. Born Nov. 3, 1943, in Madison County, she was the daughter of the late Cicero and Gertie Breeden Taylor. She was a gift from God for so many people. She loved everyone and if she was able, she would help anyone in need. She was very loved and will be missed by many. God needed an angel that would come and help him, so he called on Margaret because he knew she would get the job done. She has gone to heaven to join her granddaughter, Tiffany Renee Fisher; her mother, Gertie Breeden Taylor; her father Cicero Taylor; and her three sisters, Mary Evelyn Taylor, Peggy Ann Taylor and Agnes Louise Rodriquez. She is survived by three loving daughters, Velda Jean Conley of Charlottesville, Robin Loretta Bryant of Palmyra, and Ann Marie Marshall of Charlottesville; 11 grandchildren, Melissa, Chrissy, B.J., Jay, Joshua, Roger, Corey, Tyler, Lance, Henry and Kevin; five great-grandchildren, Keith, Alanna, Dylan, Kierstyn and Cameron; her nephews and nieces, Glen, James, Chris, Loretta, Darin, Kim, Bo and Pat; one very special cousin, Mary Ann Ronquest; and a sister, Susan Shifflett Adkins of Charles City. Mr. Shifflett was born in Crozet, Va., and lived in Edgemere since he was 16 years old. He retired from the Nelson Co. with 45 years of service. Marshall Hilbert Frazier, 76, of Elkton, died on Wednesday, July 31, 2002, at Avante of Harrisonburg. He was born on Feb. 11, 1926, in Charlottesville and was a son of the late John L. and Vergie Shifflett Frazier. Mr. Frazier retired from the Lynchburg Training Center and was a carpenter. A Navy veteran of World War II, he was a member of the Gooden Brothers VFW Post 9292. He attended the Baptist church and the Elkton Mennonite Church. Mr. Frazier was married to Elsie Lam Creasey Frazier and Allison Schrader Frazier. Both preceded him in death. He was born March 1, 1923, in McGaheysville, VA., and was a son of the late David Luther Shifflett and Gracie Powell Shifflett. He served in the Army during World War II in England and Ireland as a military policeman. He was a member of the Gooden Brothers VFW Post 9292 in Elkton. He was employed as shop foreman for Folkes and Miller Neon Service Co. in Rockville, Md. before retiring. His wife, Loris Yeager Shifflett, died March 14, 1987. Surviving are two sons, John Holloman, Beltsville, Md., and Christopher Shifflett, Frederick, Md.; one brother, Vernon H. Shifflett, Elkton; two sisters, Pauline Graham, Neosho, MO., and Anna Mae Ottoway, Huntsville, Ala.; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Marshall Lee Watson, 66, of Ruckersville, died Wednesday, Sept. 11, 2002, at his home. Born Oct. 19, 1935, in Greene County, he was the son of the late Davis Kent Watson and Polly Melone Watson. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, Marlon Kent Watson. He is survived by his wife, Violet H. Watson; three sons, Douglas M. Watson and his wife, Kathy, David R. Watson and his wife, Loretta, and Michael L. Watson and his wife, Susan, all of Ruckersville; two stepsons, Nelson C. Taylor and his wife, Robyn, of Richmond and Gary S. Taylor of Santa Fe, N.M.; 10 grandchildren, Tori Watson, Dustin Watson, Matthew Watson, Nicole Brown, Christopher Watson, Katelynn Watson, Danielle Powdrell, Raymond Powdrell, Craig Taylor, and Kristen Taylor; one sister, Marian W. Durrer and her husband, Tommy; and two nieces, Diane D. Lawson and Mary D. Fitzgerald. As a young man, Marshall was very active in baseball around Central Virginia. He strove to promote community activities involving sports for youth. He was an intricate part in the development of the Youth Center and also coached little league baseball. Seeing young adults that he coached become successful within the community brought him great pride. Marshall was on the steering committee to form and create Greene Hills Club. Golfing with his friends was a weekly event that he thoroughly enjoyed. He was an original member and helped form the Football Boosters Club for William Monroe High School. He also served on the Greene County School Board and the Board of Supervisors. Music was a major part of Marshall's life. He was a talented guitarist, who played at an early age with his father's band, The Davis Watson Band. In the seventies, he played in The Moonshiners Band, which also included his sons at various times. He established what was originally Watson Insurance Agency, which in 1971, became Watson & Durrer Insurance Agency, of which he remained president. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. this evening at Ryan Funeral Home, Quinque. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday afternoon at Ryan Funeral Chapel in Quinque, with interment in Ruckersville Cemetery with Masonic Rites. The Rev. Mark Holder will officiate. He was a United States Navy veteran, and a longtime member of St. John's Episcopal Church, where he served as Junior Warden. Mr. Shifflett retired from Dupont after 43 years of service. She was also preceded in death by her three sons, James F. "Jimmy", Robert H. "Bob", and Cecil Cole Marshall; and granddaughter, Laura Kay Taylor. Mee-Ma lived a long and fulfilling life with her family and friends. She touched the lives of many adults and children through her Kiddie Corner Day Care and preschool that was operated for 35 years. She was loved and respected by all and will be greatly missed. She is survived by siblings, Jim Cole, Byrdie Gimbert; daughters, Kay Taylor, Nancy and her husband, Ron Taylor; and a daughter-in-law, Charlotte Marshall. He was born on April 8, 1938, in Churchville, a son of the late Samuel Marshall and Nora (Back) Marshall. Mr. Marshall was a lifelong resident of the Staunton area. He was employed with Herndon House Furnishings as a delivery driver. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Mary Martin and six brothers, Roscoe, Roy, George, Briscoe, Eugene and Clyde Marshall. Surviving in addition to his wife are two sons, Waide H. Walter Lewis Marshall, 80, of Lexington, died Friday, July 1, 2005, at his home following a short illness. Mr. Marshall was born Sept. 29, 1924, in Greene County, and was a son of the late Joseph Andrew Marshall and Mamie Virginia Herring Marshall. He was a graduate of Charlottesville High School and the Jefferson School of Commerce in Charlottesville. A veteran of World War II, Mr. Marshall served in the US Navy with the Merchant Marines throughout Europe, the Mediterranean, the Near and Far East, and Russia. He was a 50-year member and deacon at Manly Memorial Baptist Church in Lexington. Mr. Marshall opened Rockbridge Auto Parts, Inc, in 1954, and retired in 2004. He was a 50 year member and past president of the Lexington Lions Club, charter member and past president of the Virginia Automotive Wholesale Association (VAWA), member and past president of the Virginia Carolina Automotive Wholesale Association (VCAWA) and a member of the Mountain City Masonic lodge No. 67 A.F. & A.M. for nearly 50 years. He was an avid sports enthusiast who loved to golf and hunt. In addition to his parents, Mr. Marshall was preceded in death by four brothers, Willard Marshall, Gaines A. Marshall, George W. Marshall and Harry L. Marshall. Wesley L. Marshall of West Street died at an early hour this morning at the University Hospital, following an illness of two weeks. He was a native of Greene County, son of the late Benjamin F. and Fannie Detamore Marshall, and was 66 years of age. He was twice married, first to Miss Lula Garrison of this city. Of that union, five children survive – Richard T. Marshall of Richmond, Mrs. Fannie Craig, of Schuyler, and Samuel E., James F. and Robert L. Marshall all of this city. There are 13 grandchildren. Mr. Marshall’s second wife, who was Miss Mary Estes of Greene County died on February 18, 1942. Mr. Marshall also leaves one brother, Benjamin L. Marshall, of this city and four sisters, Mrs. Eva Harlowe of Stanardsville, Miss Lizzie Marshall and Mrs. Mary Watson, both residents of Greene, and Mrs. Bessie Avery of Wakefield. Zean Marshall Shifflett, 87, Elkton, died November 18, 1994, at Rockingham Memorial Hospital in Harrisonburg. He had been ill for several months. Mr. Shifflett was born March 6, 1907, in Greene County and was the son of the late Andrew Jackson and Laura Morris Shifflett. He had been employed in the maintenance department for the Town of Elkton until his retirement. He attended the Shenandoah Baptist Church. In 1926, he married the former Nellie Ann Meadows, who died March 22, 1970. Surviving are three sons, Harvey L., Alva L., and Bobby A. Shifflett, all of Elkton; 15 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren. The Rev. Hudson Nuckols will conduct the funeral at 2 p.m. Monday at the Shenandoah Baptist Church. Burial will be in the Jollets Cemetery, Page County. Friends may call after 4 p.m. today at the Kyger & Trobaugh Funeral Home in Elkton, where the family will receive friends 7-8 p.m. Sunday.
