Mrs. Bud Raines
Mrs. Addie Knight Raines, 75, a former resident of Geer, died at 3 a.m. Saturday
at her home at 606 Monticello Ave. A native of Greene County, she was the
daughter of the late William and Mary Wood Knight, and the widow of Bud Raines.
She leaves three sons, Carl and Walter Raines of White Hall, and Raymond Raines
of Geer; a daughter Mrs. Ethel Fincham of Louisa; two sisters, Mrs. Minnie
Lawson and Mrs. Gabra Morris of Geer; and several grandchildren. Funeral
services were held at 2 p.m. today from Mt. Vernon Methodist Church at Geer,
with burial in the Morris family cemetery there.

ADDIE SHIFFLETT KNIGHT
Addie Shifflett Knight, of Dyke, passed away Sunday, March 16, 2003, at her
home. She was born in Greene County, a daughter of the late Gilbert and Nellie
Morris Shifflett. She is survived by her husband, James F. "Buddy" Knight; three
daughters, Florence Dorrier and her husband, Ronnie, of Scottsville, Lois
Richards and her husband, Billy, and Linda Knight; a son, Wayne Morris and his
wife, Helen, all of Dyke; five loving grandchildren, Thomas Wayne Mallory and
his wife, Sandy, Crystal Morris, Kevin Morris and friend Michelle Fraticelli,
Christopher and Whitney Richards; two special great-grandchildren, McKenzie and
Skyler; three sisters, Mammie Morris of Rochelle, Louise "Ruby" Haynes and
Cynthia Shifflett of Madison; two brothers, Henry Shifflett and his wife Fannie
and Fred Shifflett of Dyke; a foster sister, Winnie Tulloh of Stanardsville; and
her best friend for 50 years, Hennie Donaldson of Harwood, Md. A funeral service
will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, March 19, 2003, at Evergreen Church of the
Brethren, of which she was a member, with interment in the church cemetery. The
Rev. C.C. Kurts and the Rev. David Brunk will officiate. The family will receive
friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the Ryan Funeral Home Chapel in Quinque. A
special thanks to her former son-in-law, Thomas Mallory; a special
daughter-in-law, Helen Morris; and a special sister-in-law, Ruby J. Shifflett.

Mrs. Alice Davie Roach Knight, 70, wife of H. J. Knight of Orange, died Sunday,
July 30, 1950 at University Hospital, Charlottesville after a long illness. She
was a daughter of the late John Scott Roach and Rachel Williams Roach, and as
born in Hardy County, W. Va. Dec. 21, 1879, but spent the greater part of her
life in Madison and Orange Counties and was a member of the Fairview Christian
Church of Hood. Funeral services were held from Preddy’s Funeral Home on Tuesday
at 2:30 p.m. conducted by Rev. E. J. Spring, assisted by Rev. F. B. LeSueur,
with interment in Graham Cemetery, Pallbearers were Frank Weaver, Carlton Webb,
George Collins, Coleman Lanford, Stewart Yancey and Amon Alger. Besides her
husband, she is survived by five daughters, and one son, Mrs. W. W. Godlove,
Hagerstown, Md., Mrs. Floyd J. Lewis, Hagerstown, Mrs. C. C. Grasty, Orange,
Mrs. George Y Foster, Madison Run, Mrs. R. W. Estes, Detroit, Mich., and John S.
Knight of Madison Run; also 17 Grandchildren, three Great-grandchildren and the

ALICE L. MORRIS KNIGHT
Alice L. Knight, 83, of Charlottesville died Friday, March 12, 1993, in a local
hospital. She was born in Greene County on April 9, 1909 and was a daughter of
the late Lively Scott and Mary Shifflett Morris. She was the widow of McCue
Knight. Mrs. Knight was a member of the Evergreen Church of the Brethren.
Surviving are three daughters, Stella Mawyer and Jean Hensley, both of
Charlottesville, and Doris Knight of Norcross, Ga.; three sons, Hansford “Jack”
Knight of Charlottesville, Donald Knight of Cocoa, Fla., and Wilson Knight of
Harrisonburg; a sister, Maude Shifflett of Charlottesville; 14 grandchildren; 20
great-grandchildren, and one great grandchild. A funeral service will be held at
2 p.m. today at Evergreen Church of the Brethren in Dyke with the Rev. C. C.
Kurtz and the Rev. James Jinks officiating. Teague Funeral Home is in charge of
arrangements.

Allie Mae Knight, 97, of Stanardsville, died Wednesday, may 13, 1998, at
Evergreene Nursing Care Center. She was born May 12, 1901, in Greene County, a
daughter of the late John C. and Louella Morris. Her husband was the late Wilbur
H. Knight. She was also preceded in death by a daughter, Lelia Snow and three
sons, Glenwood Knight, Parker Knight and Haywood Knight. She is survived by five
daughters, Lizzie Long of Stanardsville, Eunice Deane of Ruckersville, Lorene
Simms and her husband, Jimmy, and Katherine Bramel and her husband, Earl, of
Charlottesville, and Helen Cabel and her husband Don, of Richmond; eight sons,
Jessie Knight and his wife, Ruby, Wess Knight and his wife, Mary, Marvin Knight
and his wife, Goldie, Casper Knight and his wife, Corrine, of Stanardsville,
Alton Knight and his wife, Kay, Lyman Knight of Quinque, Elvin Knight and his
wife, Doris, and Lindsay Knight and his wife Frances, of Elkton; 60
grandchildren; 94 great-grandchildren; an a number of great-grandchildren. A
funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday at First Baptist Church of which she

ALMA MASON KNIGHT SR.
Alva Mason Knight, Sr. 56, of Gordonsville, died Monday, April 20, 1998, at his
home. Born March 21, 1942, in Charlottesville, he was a son of the late Jacob
Aster and Mary Harris Knight. Mr. Knight was also preceded in death by a sister,
Beatrice Payne. Survivors include a son, Alva M. Knight, Jr. and his wife,
Tracy, a daughter, Joyce Ann Knight, and a brother, Stewart Knight and his wife,
Betty, all of Ruckersville; a sister, Dorothy Johnson and her husband, Charles,
of Charlottesville; two grandchildren, Ashby Morris and Katie Knight and eight
nieces and nephews. A funeral service was held on Thursday, April 23, at Ryan
Funeral Chapel, Quinque, with the Rev. Omie Shifflett officiating. Interment
followed in Beaver Dam Baptist Church Cemetery.

WOLFTOWN – Mrs. Annie Knighting Berry, 74, died yesterday morning at her home
here. She was born June 15, 1894, in Madison County, daughter of the late Andrew
Jackson and Lena Gallihugh Knighting. Surviving are her husband, Odie J. Berry;
six sons, Harry E., Phillip C., Louis J., Curtis H., Dillard M. and Ralph S.
Berry of Wolftown; one daughter, Mrs. Dahlia Clatterbuck of Remington; four
brothers, Frank Knighting of Madison, Howard Knighting of Winchester, and Wilmer
and Theodore Knighting of Criglersville; four sisters, Mrs. Beatrice Breeden of
Wolftown, Mrs. Nora berry of radiant. Mrs. Sally Tanner of Falls Church and Mrs.
Laura Whitlock of Richmond; 17 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. The
funeral will be at 2 p. m. tomorrow at the Rapidan Baptist Church, with burial
in Rose Park Cemetery.

Mrs. Annie Laura Knight, 92, of 625 Elliott Ave., died yesterday at Ivy. She was
the widow of Rev. H. S. Knight. Born Sept. 15, 1870, in Rockingham County, she
was daughter of the late John I. and Harriet Shifflett. Mrs. Knight was a member
of Evergreen Church of the Brethren. Surviving are two sons, Howard Knight of
Charlottesville and Raymond Knight of Baltimore, Md.; six daughters, Mrs. Nora
Snow of Ruckersville, Mrs. Effie Snow of Earlysville, Mrs. Duane Morris and Mrs.
Graden Fadley of Arlington, Mrs. Amanda Sharon and Mrs. Eunice Hester of
Hyattsville, Md., a half-brother, B. C. Shifflett of Newport News; a
half-sister, Mrs. Lomo Morris of Newport News; 32 grandchildren 62
great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren. A funeral service will be
held at 2 p. m. Sunday at Evergreen Church of the Brethren with burial in the
church cemetery near Dyke. The body will lie in state from 1 to 2 p. m. Sunday
in the church.

ARNIE EUGENE KNIGHT
Arnie Eugene "Gene" Knight, 56, of Shenandoah, died Monday, Sept. 19, 2005, at
Rockingham Memorial Hospital in Harrisonburg. Mr. Knight was born Aug. 20, 1949,
in Rockingham County, and was the son of Ornie Knight of Penn Laird and the late
Lillian Meadows. He grew up and attended school in Alexandria and later worked
at Shenandoah Poultry and Valley Proteins. He enjoyed hunting and fishing and
had attended the Elkton Pentecostal Church. In addition to his father, he is
survived by his companion of 27 years, Susan "Bootie" Hager of Shenandoah; five
sons, Arnie Knight Jr. and Jerry Wayne Knight, both of Henderson, Nev., Edward
Hager of Elkton, David Hager of Keezletown and Robert Hager of Georgia; four
daughters, Tammy Knight of Henderson, Nev., Lorraine Leggett of Ocala, Fla.,
Lisa Rodeheaver of Buena Vista, Ga., and Donna Cooper of Georgia; three
brothers, Gary Knight of Linville, Bobby Knight of Elkton and Boyd Knight of
McGaheysville; 36 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren and two nieces. The Rev.
Tim Simmons and Pastor James Kite will conduct the funeral 3 p.m. Saturday,
Sept. 24, at the Kyger Funeral Home in Elkton. Burial will follow at Elk Run
Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral
home. Ms. Hager will be staying with her sister, Mrs. Grover Mowbray, in
Bridgewater.

Funeral services for Arthur Jackson Knight, 76, who died Sunday, December 23,
1973 in a Richmond hospital, was held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Preddy Funeral

Cemetery. Knight was born in Greene County, the son of the late George W. Knight
and Lucetta Dean Knight. He was a member of Gordonsville United Methodist

Mrs. Athlie Knight, 94, widow of Wesley Knight, died Saturday night at the home
of her daughter, Mrs. Mary Geer of Ruckersville. She was a native of Greene
county and was the daughter of the late Calvin and Elizabeth Morris. Besides
Mrs. Geer, she leaves a sister, Mrs. Lou Ella Morris, of Ruckersville; 27
grandchildren several great grandchildren and three great grandchildren. Funeral
services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday from the Hood and Clore Funeral home,
Quinque, with burial in Cedar Grove cemetery. The Rev. I.L. Bennett officiated.

BARBARA JANE KNIGHT SANDRIDGE
Barbara Jane Knight Sandridge, 59, of Charlottesville, died Saturday, December
15, 2007. Born in Maryland on August 29, 1948, she was the daughter of the late
George E. and Mary S. Shifflett Knight. In addition to her parents, she was also
preceded in death by her sister, Doris Blanchfield. Ms. Sandridge was a retired
school bus driver for Albemarle County and was a special foster mother to many
children and loved them dearly. She was a very special person and loved
everyone. She was always putting others first. She is survived by her children,
Greg W. Sandridge and his wife, Becky, of Crozet, Lori A. Raines and her
husband, W.L. Raines, of Dyke, Amy L. Sandridge of Charlottesville, Christi L.
Dibble and her husband, Charlie Dibble Jr., of Palmyra, Amanda L. Morris and her
husband, George Jr., of Palmyra; three brothers, Wilson Knight of Free Union,
Ronnie Knight and his wife, Pat, of Free Union, George Knight of Earlysville;
grandchildren, Gregory, Tiffany, Chelsea, Wendy, Ashley, Sierra, Maleigha,
Mandel, Jesse, Mariah; and one great-grandchild, Dylan Thomas; and many nieces
and nephews. A funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday, December
20, 2007, at the Teague Chapel, with Pastor Jonathan King officiating. Interment

MT. Clinton, DIES
Funeral Services from Peak Mennonite Church Sunday at 3 P. M.
Benjamin Knight, age 58 well known farmer of the Mt. Clinton section, died at
his home yesterday afternoon at 3:30 following an illness of several weeks.
Death was due to complications. Mr. Knight was born in Greene County in 1878 but
made his home here for a number of years and was well known in West Rockingham
and leaves a host of friends who mourn his passing. His wife who was Miss Mary
Smith before marriage, died several years ago. He was a member of the Mennonite
Church for a number of years. He is survived by the following: one daughter,
Mrs. Verdie Knight at home; one son Franklin Knight at home, three brothers,
Jackson Knight of Gordonsville; David Knight of Orange Court House, and Lanzy
Knight of Richmond. Funeral services will be held Sunday afternoon at three
o’clock from the Peak Mennonite Church. Burial will be in the Mt. Clinton
Cemetery.

Benjamin Franklin “Frank” Knight, 78, 410 S. Main St., Mount Crawford, died
Friday, April 30, 1999, at his home. Mr. Knight was born March 7, 192 1, in
Rockingham County, and was a son of the late Benjamin and Mary R. Mowbray
Knight. He was raised by Lester and Sarah Smith. He lived in Rockingham County
most of his life, where he received his education. He was employed at Troy
Laundry for 25 years and also worked at Metro Pants, Ethan Allen and
Harrisonburg Truck Stop. On Feb. 4, 1956, he married Janie Bell Crowe, who
survives. Also surviving are one son, Ernie F. Knight, Mount Crawford; four
daughters, Mary Buracker and Mildred Miller, both of Verona, Sarah Sarver,
Harrisonburg, and Carolyn Currence, Dayton; two foster sisters, Frances Jean
Harper and Nancy Lee Wheelbarger; three foster brothers, Lester, Leroy and Ray
Lynn Smith, all of Harrisonburg; six grandchildren: and three great-
grandchildren. The Revs. James Shadwick and Archie Lam will conduct the funeral
at 2 p.m. Monday at the Lindsey Harrisonburg Funeral Home. Burial will follow at
the Middle River Church of the Brethren Cemetery. The family will receive

Bernard Wesley Knight, 79, formerly of Naussau Street, died December 17, 1986.
Surviving are two sisters, Lucy Ann Kirby of Charlottesville and Verda Matilda
Knight Whatley of Louisa; three brothers, Elmer Barton Knight, James Morgan
Knight and Willie Warfield Knight, all of Reading, Penn. He was proceded in
death by two brothers, Harvey Odis Knight and Everett Knight and by a
half-sister, Maggie Lee Sampson of Eastham. Mr. Knight was a World War II U. S.
Army veteran. Graveside funeral service will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday in

Mrs. Bertha Ola Shifflett, 78, of 1319 E. Market St. Died at her home this
morning. Born Jan. 18, 1885 in Greene County, she was the daughter of the late
James. M. and Leana Jollett Knight Shifflett. She was the widow of Ben
Shifflett, who died Jan. 24. 1959. She is survived by four sons, Lewis E.
Shifflett of Atlanta, Ga., and Ellis F. Shifflett, Eugene J. Shifflett and
Bennie Shifflett of Dundalk, Md., five brothers, James F. Knight and Clyde
Knight of Dyke; Will Knight and Isaac Knight of Dundalk, Md. and E.C. Knight of
Charlottesville; three sisters, Mrs. Maybel Shifflett of Dundalk, Md., Mrs. Pear
Shifflett of Baltimore, Md. and Mrs. Lanie Jenkins of Remington; 18

BESSIE LEE KNIGHT
Mrs. Knight, of Penn Laird, Dies
PENN LAIRD, June 20 Mrs. Bessie Lee Knight, 56, wife of John R. Knight, a well
known and beloved resident of this community for the past 12 years, died
unexpectedly this morning. She formerly lived at Elkton. Mrs. Knight had
suffered from high blood pressure for several years but her condition was not
thought to be serious and she continued her usual activities around her home.
She was taken to Rockingham Memorial Hospital and was pronounced dead on arrival
there. A daughter of the late Ranson Morris and Lydia Morris, she was born In
October, 1898, in Greene County where she spent the early years of her life.
Following her marriage to John R. Knight 41 years ago, Mr. and Mrs. Knight
resided In Elkton 15 years, then they moved here. Mrs. Knight was a devoted wife
and mother and a good neighbor and friend. She was a devout Christian and was
admired and respected by all who knew her. She was a member of the Pentecostal
Church. Besides her husband, an employee of the Ace Block Company, she Is
survived by ten children: Clarence C. Knight and Ornie Lee Knight, both of
Elkton; Mrs. Clyde (Gladys) Miller. Ervin E. Knight and Lewey W. Knight, all of
McGaheysville; Mrs. Floyd (Rita) Davis of Glen Bernie, Md.; and Mrs. Orby (Orie
Belle) Lam, Mrs. Palmer (Louise) Morris. Mrs. Nelson (Margaret) Armentrout and
Elmer L. Knight, all of Penn Laird. She also leaves 25 grand-children and one
great grandchild: two sisters, Mrs. Sallie Morris of Charlottesville, and Mrs.
Becky Morris of Free Union; and two brothers, Newton Morris and Louis Morris,
both of Greene County. A number of nieces and nephews also survive. Two
daughters, Goldie Lee and Flossie Knight, preceded her in death. Funeral
services will be held Wednesday afternoon at two o'clock from the Free
Pentecostal Church in Elkton. The Rev. Robert E. Garber will conduct the
services, assisted by the Rev. Logan Dole, Jr. Burial will be In the Elk Run
cemetery at Elkton. Active pallbearers will be John Keezel, Francis Keezel,
Casper Harlin, Earman Collier, Bernard Collier and Edgar Morris. The body was
removed from the Lindsey funeral home In Harrisonburg this evening to Mrs.
Knight's late residence where relatives, pallhomers and friends are asked to
meet Wednesday at 1:15. A brief service will be held at the residence prior to
leaving for the church.

BETTY KNIGHT SHIFFLETT
MRS. WM. L. SHIFLETT - Mrs. Betty Knight Shifflett, wife of William Lawrence
Shifflett, died June 26th at the family residence at Mission Home. She was a
native of Greene County, daughter of the late Garland & Diana Morris Knight, and
was 71 years of age. Besides her husband, she is survived by one daughter, Mrs.
Eleanor V. Loving of Lexington, and three sons, Wilson Arthur and Claude Wilson
Shifflett, both of Mission Home, and Lawrence Samuel Shifflett, of Blackstone.
Mrs. Shiflett also leaves two sisters, Mrs. Sallie Eheart and Mrs. Eliza
Shifflett, both of Free Union. The funeral was held at 2 o’clock Thursday from
the Mission Home Episcopal church, the services being conducted by the Rev.
George Fisk. Burial will follow in the churchyard.

CARL DOUGLAS KNIGHTING
Carl Douglas Knighting of Dover died Saturday April 13, 2002 at his home
surrounded by his family. He was 64. Mr. Knighting was born in Harrisonburg,
Virginia, on March 17, 1938, the son of the late Leona Smith Knighting-Pence and
the late Warnie Ross Knighting. He and Amelia moved to Dover from Maryland in
1984. He recently retired from the Defense Logistics Agency on March 20, 2002,
as a chemical quality surveillance representative, stationed with McGuire AFB,
NJ, and later with Ft. Dix, NJ. He also retired from the US Air Force in 1975,
after having served in various military assignments within CONUS, Italy, France,
Korea, and Vietnam. After his military retirement, he worked as a fuel supply
specialist/supervisor with Air Force One at Andrews Air Force Base, MD. Carl was
a recipient of numerous civilian superior performance awards; and military
awards, such as the Bronze Star Medal, Gallantry Cross, United Nations Service
Medal, National Defense Service Medal, and various Honor/Campaign/Commendation
medals. He was a member of the American Legion Walter J Fox Post 2 and the
Retired Enlisted Military Association. He enjoyed gardening, fishing, cooking,
collecting model vintage cars, and was a handyman during his free time. Mr.
Knighting is survived by his wife of 17 years, Amelia Loares Knighting, and his
3 daughters, Maria Imelda Lao, Diana Knighting of Myrtle Beach, SC, and Shelby
Knighting Kay of Simpsonville, SC; 2 sisters, Bettie Chastain of Ooltewah, TN,
Faye Cash of Windsor, VA; 1 brother, Charles Knighting of Harrisonburg, VA, and
several nieces, nephews and grandnieces and grandnephews, brothers-in-law and a
sister-in-law. He will be most remembered as the “hospitable” guy by Filipinos,
other foreigners, friends and strangers who stayed with them in their home. A
Mass of Christian burial will be held at 12:30 pm, Monday, April 22, 2002, at
Holy Cross Church, 631 S State St, Dover. Friends may call Friday April 19, 2002

Cecil Edward Knight, 89, of McGaheysville, died Saturday, Jan. 18, 2003, at
Rockingham Memorial Hospital in Harrisonburg. Mr. Knight was born Oct. 17, 1913,
in Rockingham County, and was a son of the late Zebadee and Belle Francis
Shiflet Knight. He was a member of Grace Memorial Episcopal Church and retired
from the maintenance department at James Madison University. On Dec. 4, 1939, he
married Pearl Virginia Morris, who survives. Also surviving are a daughter,
Betty K. Miller of Ames, Iowa; three sons, Bobby L. Knight of Grottoes, and
Billy E. Knight and Gary W. Knight, both of Waynesboro; three sisters, Delores
Marshall of Harrisonburg, and Cleta Tutwiler and Wanda Armentrout, both of
McGaheysville; a brother, Winston I. Knight of McGaheysville; 10 grandchildren
and 17 great-grandchildren. Father Stuart Wood will conduct the funeral 10 a.m.
Tuesday at Grace Memorial Episcopal Church in Lynnwood. Burial will follow at
Mount Olivet Cemetery in McGaheysville. There will be no formal visitation or

Cecil Ray Knight, 84 of Route 2, Crozet, died Friday, Feb,. 16, 1990 in
Charlottesville. He was born Dec. 25, 1905 at Dyke, the son of the late George
Allen and Ida Morris Knight. Mr. Knight was preceded in death by a sister, Addie
Gibson of Dyke and two brothers, Charles Knight of Baltimore, Md., and James
Knight of Stanardsville. He is survived by his wife, Ruby Walton Knight; six
foster sons, Lawrence and Sanford Kephart; William, Robert and John Spears and
Frank Gibson and a foster daughter, Vergie Spears, all of Crozet. Also surviving
are two more foster sons, Charles Knight of Shenandoah and Jack Via of Grottoes.
He was a member of the Elks Lodge #389 and the Episcopal Church. For many years,
he was a volunteer resident lay worker at Christ Church Episcopal Mission,
Hightop Mountain, in Greene County. This mission was established by Mr. Knight
and his wife. In the past three decades, Mr. and Mrs. Knight have opened their
home to 36 children, many of whom were mentally retarded. Funeral services will
be held at 2 p.m. Monday, Feb. 19, at the Prize Hill Church, Boonesville. The
Rev. Robert M. Alton, assisted by the Rev. Elbert Conley and the Rev. Craig
Snow, will officiate. The family requests memorial contributions to be given to
the Prize Hill Church cemetery association in care of Mrs. Edith Carrier, P.O.
Box 50, Free Union, 22940. Friends will be received in the home at Boonesville.

CHARLES E. KNIGHT, JR.
Charles E. Knight Jr., 84, of Lynchburg died Wednesday, Jan. 29, 2003. He was
the husband of Mildred Joyce Driskill Knight. Mr. Knight was born Sept. 23,
1918, in the Shenandoah Valley, a son of the late Charles E. Knight Sr. and
Minnie Shifflett Knight. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II where he
saw action in Normandy beginning on D-Day, Ardennes, Central Europe, Northern
France and Rhineland. His service earned him the EAME Ribbon with five Bronze
Stars with Arrowhead. He retired after 35 years of dedicated service from
Burruss Land & Lumber Co. where he worked as an Assistant Superintendent.
Charlie was an avid hunter, fisherman and gardener. In addition to his wife, he
is survived by a son, Terry L. Knight of Forest; three daughters, Daronda K.
Brooks and husband, C.W., of Rustburg, Debbie K. Martin and husband, Roger, of
Lynchburg and Libby L. Knight of Lynchburg; five grandchildren, Kelley L.
Knight, C. Wade Brooks III, Benjamin A. Brooks, Ryan T. Martin and Daronda R.
Lancaster; and five great-grandchildren. In addition to his parents, he was
preceded in death by a daughter, Reny Lynn Knight; two sisters, Virginia A.
Knight and Audrie M. Knight; and a brother, Hubert Knight. The family will
receive friends from 6-7:30 p.m., Friday, Jan. 31, 2003, at Tharp Funeral Home.
A graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 1, 2003, at

Charles Edward Knight, 91, a resident of Harrisonburg, died Thursday, July 7,
2011. Mr. Knight was born April 14, 1920, in Rockingham County, and was the son
of the late Lanzy Paul and Victoria Shifflett Knight. He owned and operated the
Sand Pit in Bridgewater for 30 years. Later, he owned and operated a lawnmower
shop for 15 years. On June 10, 1943, he married the former Nellie Kibler, who
survives. Also surviving are four children, Charles Knight Jr. of Harrisonburg,
Bonnie Sue Warner of Broadway, Betty L. Sampson of Harrisonburg, and John Wayne
Knight of Bridgewater; two sisters, Frances Cassiday and Margie Wilfong of
Harrisonburg; 11 grandchildren and 12 greatgrandchildren. Along with his
parents, Mr. Knight was preceded in death by a son, Nelson Eddie Knight. The

served his country during World War II and was a member of Owensville
Pentecostal Church. He is survived by his wife, Laura Knight of Maryland; one

Ches Knight, 75, of Geer died Saturday, January 22, 1872, at his home. Born in

Clara Knight Lam, 60, of Rt. 2, Harrisonburg was dead on arrival at Rockingham
Memorial Hospital Thursday after being stricken at her home. She had been in
failing health for eight years. Mrs. Lam was born Oct. 31,1917 and was the
daughter of Victoria Shifflett Knight and the late Lanzy Knight. She spent most
of her life in the Harrisonburg area. On July 5, 1935, she married James B. Lam
Sr., who survives. Surviving, in addition to her husband and mother, are three
sons, Erwin N. Lam of Harrisonburg, Roger C. Lam of Maryland and James B. Lam of
Broadway; six sisters, Florence Parks, Elizabeth Rhinehart, Mollie Smith and

Korean War and was a truck driver for VDOT for 28 years. He attended Stanley
High School and was a member of Bethlehem Christian Church. Survivors include

Eula Knight Proffitt, 83, of Troy, died Thursday, Dec. 26, 2002, in the Martha
Jefferson Hospital in Charlottesville. She was born Oct. 10, 1919, in Orange
County, and was a daughter of the late Jake L. Knight and Gertrude Rigsby
Knight. She was married to the late Herman Lee Proffitt and was a member of
Beaver Dam Baptist Church, Troy. Mrs. Proffitt is survived by two daughters,
Anna V. Walker of Troy, and Shirley Walker and her husband, Lewis, of
Gordonsville; two sons, Eugene H. Proffitt and his wife, Elizabeth, of Troy, and
Norman Lee Proffitt Jr. and his wife, Wanda, of Troy; one brother, Edward Knight
of Troy; two sisters, Violet Bright and Louise High, both of Richmond; eight
grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren. In addition to her parents and
husband, she was preceded in death by a son, Norman Lee Proffitt Sr.; three
brothers, Jacob Knight, Floyd Knight and Zeb Knight; one sister, Carrie Dabney;

Eunice Knight Hester passed away at Sudley Manor Nursing Home in Manassas on
Wednesday, Jan. 18, 2006. She was born October 2, 1912, to the Rev. Henry S. and
Annie S. Knight of Dyke, Va. She was a graduate of William Monroe High School in
Stanardsville in 1930. She sought the city life of Washington, D.C. She worked
initially with her sister, Mayme at H.L. Green Company for several years before
joining the United States Dept. of the Interior, where she remained, except for
a 10 year absence rearing a young son, until her retirement in 1977. She met and
married George Clifton Hester of Danville, Va. on Sept. 22, 1944, in Bethesda,
Md. His untimely death in 1985, left her alone for the last 21 years. She was a
woman of principle, and we who were part of her life are immeasurably better for
her having been part of ours. She is survived by two sons, James and his wife,
Katherine, of Woodbridge, Va., and Richard and his wife, Sarah, of Texas; six
grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and one great -great-grandchild. A funeral
service will be held 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 21, 2006, at the Evergreen Church of
the Brethren in Dyke with the Rev C.C. Kurtz officiating. Interment will follow
in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends at the church one hour

Evelyn Virginia Knight, 81, of 1053 U.S. Highway 340 West Bus. in Stanley, died
Monday, June 11, 2007, at Page Memorial Hospital in Luray. Mrs. Knight was born
Nov. 5, 1925, in Stanley, and was a daughter of the late Jackson Junior Cubbage
and Carrie Virginia (Cubbage) Cubbage. She was a textile worker at Wrangler. On
Nov. 5, 1942, she married James Marion Knight, who preceded her in death Dec. 8,
1986. Survivors include a daughter, Shirley Ann Stoneberger of Stanley; a son,
Larry L. Knight of Luray; three brothers, William Isaac Cubbage, Randolph
Cubbage and Rawleigh Cubbage, all of Stanley; a sister, Linda Helen
Jenkins-Sours of Luray; nine grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren and four

NEW MARKET — A graveside service for Everette Howard Knight, 64, of New Market
will be conducted 11 a.m. Thursday in Mt. Olivet Cemetery at McGaheysville by
the Rev. Richard J. Sander. Mr. Knight's body was found Monday evening in about
five feet of water in the Shenandoah River near New Market. Witnesses said Mr.
Knight was wading in the river when he apparently slipped and drowned, said a
spokesman for the Shenandoah County Sheriff's Department. The spokesman said an
autopsy report probably will not be received for four or five days, but the
death has been ruled an accidental drowning. Reports that Mr. Knight had been
drinking cannot be verified until the autopsy report is obtained, the spokesman
noted. Mr. Knight was born April 24, 1913 in McGaheysville and was a son of
Belle Shifflette Knight of McGaheysville and the late Zebe D. Knight. He lived
most of his life in Baltimore and was a retired employee of a knitting mill
there. He had served overseas in the Army during World War II. He lived at New
Market the past three years and was a member of St. Stephens-The Good Shepherd
Episcopal Church. Surviving in addition to his mother are five children, Lowell
Thomas and Everette Howard Knight Jr., both of Woodbine, Md., Kenney Knight of
Harrisonburg, Bronson Knight of San Antonio, Tex. and Jackie Knight of Richmond;
seven grandchildren; four sisters, Cleta Tutwiler Eppard, Delores Marshall and
Wanda Armentrout, all of McGaheysville, and Anita Williams of Elkton, and two
brothers, Cecil and Winston Knight, both of McGaheysville. The body is at the

Fred Harrison Knighten, 79, of 536-C Green St., Harrisonburg, died Friday, June
4, 2004, at Avante at Harrisonburg, where he had lived for three months. Mr.
Knighten was born Dec. 18, 1924, in Rockingham County, and was the son of the
late Benjamin Harrison Knighten and Ida Jane Whetzel Knighten. He was a truck
driver for Goods Transfer and United Van Lines. He lived in Harrisonburg the
majority of his life. He was an Army veteran of World War II and a member of the
American Legion Post No. 188 and Rion-Bowman VFW No. 632. On Oct. 27, 1951, he
married the former Margaret Catherine Whetzel, who survives. He is also survived
by a daughter, Frances Ellen Michael of Keezletown; five sons, Frederick Whetzel
of Verona, William Keith Whetzel of Mayland, Stephen Harrison Knighten and Galen
Lee Knighten, both of Harrisonburg, and Richard Allen Ritchie of McGaheysville;
a sister, Reba Manning of McGaheysville; 27 grandchildren and 44

Frederick D. (Freddy) Knight, 65, of Tenth Legion, died Saturday, Jan. 10, 2009,
at Rockingham Memorial Hospital, where he had been a patient since January 1. He
was born on Aug. 19, 1943, in McGaheysville and was a son of the late Millard
Thomas Knight and Peggy Shifflet Mahone. He owned and operated Knight’s Towing
and Car Crushing since 1971. He also owned Knight’s Rental Properties. On Dec.
29, 1979, he married the former Nancy Coleman of Tenth Legion, who survives.
Also surviving are a son, Bryan W. (Bo) Morris Jr. and wife, Kelley, of
Broadway; a daughter, Sherry L. Mays and husband, Tom, of Lacey Spring; his dog,
Ginger; three grandchildren, Bryce Morris, Bailey Elizabeth Morris, and Samuel
Thomas Mays; a sister, Leatrice (Pat) Caricofe of Hagerstown, Md.; two
sisters-in-law, Jackie Knight and Judy Knight, both of Hampton; three nephews
and three foster sisters, Irene, Patsy, and Joyce. He was preceded in death by
his brothers, Donald and Steve Knight, and foster mother, Ruby Roach. He was a
member of the Sons of the American Legion in New Market, the Country Cruisers
Car Club, and a member of the Brethren Church. The Rev. Robert Edwards will
conduct a memorial service Tuesday at 2 p.m. at the Grandle Funeral Home Chapel

George Allan Knight died September 8, and was 78 years old. His wife, Ida Belle
Morris Knight preceded him in death 31 years ago. To this union were born four

Charles of Baltimore and Cecil of Boonesville. Also sixteen grandchildren and 5
great grandchildren, three brothers and a host of friends. He has been a member

Henry Charles Knight, 79, of Gordonsville, passed away peacefully Tuesday, May
22, 2001, at the Orange County Nursing Home. He was born Aug. 28, 1921, in
Lenawee County, Mich., and was the son of the late Arthur Jackson Knight and
Frieda Stuck Knight. Mr. Knight was a retired carpenter, and a member of the
Gordonsville United Methodist Church. He was a veteran of World War II, and
served with distinction in the European theater with the 820th Tank Destroyer
Battalion of the U.S. Army. He is survived by is wife, Lucille Glass Knight of
Gordonsville; two sons, Henry C. Knight Jr. and his wife, Julie, of
Chesterfield, and Glenn T. Knight of Gordonsville; three daughters, Betty Jones
of Houston, Eileen Tomlin of Charlottesville, and Barbara Jane "Janie" Brown and
her husband, Peter, of Easton, Md.; 14 grandchildren, and 12
great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday a the Preddy
Funeral Home Chapel in Gordonsville, conducted by the Rev. Marilyn Spencer.
Interment will be in the Bybee's Road Baptist Church Cemetery near Zion Cross

The Rev. Henry S. Knight, a retired minister of the Church of Brethren died
recently at his home in Charlottesville after a brief illness. He was 82 years

James Lawrence Knight died at his home near Beldor March 1, 1935. He had been
ill only nine days with plural pneumonia. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. James
Knight, of Pirkey. He was born and reared in Greene county and lived here until
a year ago. His wife, Rose Knight and infant son, preceded him to the grave two
weeks ago. Their funeral being Sunday two weeks before his own. Mr. Knight was
37 years old. He was a farmer and a good provider for his family. He lived on
the farm of Arnie Shiflett. He leaves five children, Joe, Earl, Frank, Rose
Ellen and Grady at home. He also leaves his mother, Mrs. Pinnie Knight, of
Pirkey, three brothers, Messrs. Cue Knight, of Pirkey, Solomon Knight, of
Sparrows Point, Md., and Mrs. Russell Knight, of Gates City, and two sisters,
Mrs. Evelyn Knight, of Geer, and Mrs. Ernest Shiflett, of Beldor. All that
loving hands could do was done for him during his illness. His mother nursed him
until the end. He was buried beside his wife at The Pines church in the presence
of a large group of relatives and friends Sunday afternoon. Rev. H. S. Knight
conducted the services. Mr. Brill, of Elkton, was the undertaker.

home. He had been ill for the past six months. Mr. Knight was born Feb. 10,

Mowbray Knight. He was a truck driver for Wampler Foods in Hinton, and for the

Craigsville – Sept. 17 – John Knight of Craigsville, was killed Saturday,
September 12 about eleven o’clock, while hauling wood from the woodland on his
farm. The loaded wagon turned over and caught him, pinning him to the ground
under the wood and wagon and it is believed he was killed instantly. The old
colored man, who was with him, is unable to give an accurate account of just how
the accident happened. He was fifty-nine years old and was well and favorably
known in this vicinity, where he resided for the past twelve or thirteen years,
coming here from Greene County, Va. His widow, seven children, Alfred, jack,
James, and Mrs. Harry Snow of Craigsville. Mrs. Charles Via, of Fordwick, John
and Mrs. Alexander Williams of Elkton, four brothers, Benjamin and Lanzy of
Rockingham county, David of Greene county and jack of Orange county survive.

Lanzy Knight Dies Suddenly

Lanzy Knight, 73, formerly of near Harrisonburg, died suddenly last night at his
home at Spring Creek. Mr. Knight had worked during the day and appeared in his
usual health until stricken last night. Mr. Knight, who was a farmer, made his
home near Harrisonburg until 18 months ago when he moved to the Spring Creek
section. He was born March 3, 1874 in Greene County and was a son of James and
Merica Shifflett Knight. He was twice married, his first wife being Mrs. Lydia
Shifflett, who died 46 years ago. His second wife was Miss Victoria Shifflett,
who survives him. Besides his wife, he is survived by two brothers, Davis Knight
and Jack Knight, of Craigsville; and the following children: Mrs. George Parks
of Baltimore; Mrs. Edward D. Lam, of Harrisonburg; Mrs. William Payne, of
Pleasant Valley; Mrs. Mollie Crawford, of Harrisonburg; Mrs. James B. Lam, of
Harrisonburg; Mrs. William Wilfong, of Dayton; and Miss Margie Knight, at home;
and sons, Bernie Knight of Linville; Earnest Knight of Harrisonburg; Charles
Knight of Harrisonburg; James Marion and Frances Knight at home. One daughter,
Mrs. Gilbert Rice, preceded him in death 22 years ago. Funeral services will be
held Monday afternoon at 2:30 from the Mt. Clinton Mennonite Church. The body is
now at the McMullen Funeral Home.

10, 1897. Lydia died around 1902.

and spent most of his life in the cable TV industry. He was a graduate of
Culpeper High School in 1972 and was a member of Highway Assembly of God Church

Grove; father, John W. Knighting and wife, Nancy, of Madison; mother, Anna Marie

Lonie Knight Shiflett daughter of the late Garland and Dionne Knight, was born
March 6, 1879. Her age was 56 years, 2 months and 2 days. She joined the Church
of the Brethren about 38 years ago and had been a consistent member of the
church since that time. She was married to Artemous E. Shiflett, Dec. 25, 1901.
Four children were born to this union, David who preceded her to the grave 13
years ago; Lillian Hensel, of Buffalo, N.Y.; Bertha May Collier, of Earlysville
and Sanford at home. Besides the above mentioned she leaves to mourn her loss
four sisters, Isabelle Shiflett, of Pirkey; Bettie Shiflett, of Mission Home,
Sallie Eheart of Earlysville and Liza Shiflett of Stanardsville, and one
brother, David Knight, of Geer. Mrs. Shiflett was a Christian of the purest
kind. A loving mother and wife and a kind and courteous neighbor. She had never
been known to retire to her bed at night without holding family prayer. She will
be greatly missed by all with whom she ever associated. Dearly beloved, as she
was, the closer the association the greater the loss. She was laid to rest in
Evergreen Cemetery. There was a very large attendance. It showed that she had
many friends. Rev. H. B. Knight conducted the funeral. Mr. E. Y. Vernon was the
undertaker.

Mrs. Lonie Knight Shiflett died at her home near Nortonsville Sunday May 12,
1935. She was born March 6, 1879, daughter of the late Garland and Dionne
Knight. The funeral services were preached by Rev. H. S. Knight at the Pines the
following Tuesday afternoon, May 14, Nephews of the deceased acted as
pall-bearers. There were five flower girls, Mary Shiflett, Elizabeth Bruce,
Lucille Shiflett, Sallie Collier and Mildred Wood. She leaves to mourn her loss
her husband, A. E. Shiflett; two daughters, Lillian Hensel, Buffalo N.Y.; Bertha
Mae Collier, Earlysville; one son, Sanford, of Nortonsville; four sisters, Mrs.
Sallie Eheart, Earlysville; Mrs. Betty Shiflett, Mission Home, Mrs. Liza

David Knight, of Geer. Mrs. Shiflett was ever a faithful and loving mother and
wife. Beloved by all who knew her, she will be greatly missed in the community.

Louise M. Knight, co-owner of the Skyview restaurant, a Dundalk Avenue landmark
in the 1950s and '60s, died after colon cancer surgery Sept. 9 at Franklin
Square Hospital. She was 87. Mrs. Knight, who was commended many times for her
generosity to the community, never turned away anyone homeless or hungry who
came to the restaurant's back door, and she regularly supplied churches and
community organizations with baskets of food. She also was known for treating
cab drivers and policeman to free coffee. Born Sept. 21, 1914, in Barboursville,
Va., one of James and Sarah Brown's 11 children, she graduated from James
Barbour High School in 1936 and married Lawrence A. Knight in 1939 in
Charlottesville, Va. They moved to Essex about 10 years ago after living in St.
Helena and on Holabird Avenue since the early 1940s. She was a longtime member
of Dundalk Church of the Brethren. Predeceased by her husband, she is survived
by daughter Phyllis L. Clements, son-in-law and caregiver Joel Clements, four
grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, sister Kathleen Klore of Orange, Va.,
and brother James Brown of Dundalk. She also leaves behind dear friend Madelyn
McGlynn. The Rev. Dale Goodwin of Community Baptist Church in Chase conducted
services Sept. 12 at Duda-Ruck Funeral Home. Interment followed at Oak Lawn
Cemetery.

Knight was a member of the Louisa Christian Church and she worked as a sewing

Margarett W. Knighten, 76, of Avante at Harrisonburg, died Saturday, April 30,
2005. Mrs. Knighten was born Oct. 2, 1928, and was the daughter of the late
Perry and Armeda Cleaver Whetzel. She was a housekeeper. On Oct. 27, 1951, she
married Fred H. Knighten, who preceded her in death June 4, 2004. Survivors

Marion Emory "Pete" Knight, 86, of Harrisonburg, passed away on Saturday, Dec.
26, 2009, at Harrisonburg Health and Rehabilitation Center. Mr. Knight was born
on July 7, 1923, in Rockingham County, and was a son of the late Lanzy Paul and
Victoria Shifflett Knight. Pete was a laborer and custodian for Metro Pants in
Harrisonburg prior to his retirement. In 1975, he married Jo Ann Berry Knight,
who preceded him in death in 2005. Mr. Knight is survived by a stepson, James
William \"Bucky\" Berry of Harrisonburg; a brother, Charles Knight of
Harrisonburg; three sisters, Frances Casiday, Margie Wilfong and Ethel Wilfong,
all of Harrisonburg; one stepgrandson, Brent Berry; and numerous nieces and
nephews. Pete was preceded in death by four brothers, four sisters and two half

Mary Ann Morris Knight, 82, of Port Republic, went to be with her heavenly
father on Dec. 5, 2008, with two daughters by her side, Barbara and Patricia,
and was guided by the hands of her awaiting children through the pearly gates of
heaven at Harrisonburg Health and Rehabilitation Center and a long hard-fought
battle with cancer. Mrs. Knight was born March 31, 1926, in Albemarle County,
Va., and was the daughter of the late Simpson and Ruth Shifflett Bruce. She was
preceded in death by her first husband of 30 years, Simpson Buford Morris; her
second husband of 30 years, Ted Knight; three sons, William Gray, Robert Clinton
and John Morris; and two daughters, Ruby Halterman and Doris Lamb; and five
grandchildren. Mrs. Knight resided in Port Republic her entire life and was a
faithful Pentecostal believer. She was employed at Rocco and the Tip-Top Fruit
Farm for a short time but more importantly was a loving housewife and homemaker.
Mary Ann enjoyed fishing, attending yard sales, sewing, making quilts and
gardening. Surviving family and the children all from her first marriage include
two sons, Harry Morris of Harrisonburg and Robert Morris and wife, Joyce, of
Waynesboro; four daughters, Shirley Foltz and husband, Eddie, of Elkton, Barbara
Lam and husband, Lloyd, of Port Republic, Sarah Blackwell and husband, Rex, of
Staunton, and Patricia Mowbray and husband, Ronald, of Port Republic; 11
grandchildren, Lori Lamb, Karen Berry, Sherry Gilcrest, Richard Morris, Eddie
Lee Foltz, William Foltz, Jason Blackwell, Jesse Blackwell, Mary Morris, Amy
Halterman and John Halterman Jr.; 12 great-grandchildren; one
great-great-grandchild, Tori Berry; three nieces, four nephews and a special
friend, Janet Gardelio. Mary Ann will be dearly missed and continually loved by
her family and two special sons-in-law, Lloyd Lam and Ronald Mowbray. A funeral

was a Miss Knight before her marriage to the late Samuel Lewis Morris, who
departed this life about 18 months ago. Mrs. Morris was a consistent member of
the Episcopal church for more than 20 years. The deceased is survived by five
children, two sons, William Lewis and Marshall Morris, of Lydia, and three
daughters, Mrs. Robert Breeden of Lydia; Mrs. Finks Lawson of Quinque, and Mrs.
Marshall Haney, of Geer; also one brother, Mr. G.W. Knight, of Gordonsville.
Mrs. Morris was tenderly laid to rest at St. James cemetery Dec. 26 in the
presence of a large number of friends who came to pay their tribute of respect.
Rev. Malcolm Taylor, her rector, conducted the committal service. Mrs. Morris
was 65 years old. The family have the deepest sympathy of their many friends in
this sad hour.

Moses James Knight, 103, went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, July 25, 2007,
at The Laurels of Charlottesville. Born November 5, 1903, he was the son of the
late William D. and Louretta Morris Knight. He was the husband of Lola Holloway
Knight, whom he married on February 8, 1978. He was preceded in death by
Margaret Mawyer Knight, his wife of 46 years. Also, preceding him in death were
his sisters, Mary Bowen and Adeline Payne; and his brothers: Andrew, Samuel,
Manus, Russell, William, Hampton, and Greaver. Moses was retired from AT&T after
35 years of service. He was an active member of Broadus Memorial Baptist Church
and former member of Hinton Avenue United Methodist Church. Moses,
affectionately known to everyone as "PAPA", adored, loved, and cherished his
family and friends. He will be greatly missed by all of those whose lives he
touched. Surviving with his wife are his daughters, Catherine Knight Peters and
her husband, Robert "Pete", of Culpeper and June Knight Sandridge, and her
husband, Dan, of Charlottesville. He also leaves five grandchildren: Deborah
Lane Lawrence and her husband, Dave, of Ruckersville, Donna Sandridge Wood and
her husband, Doug, of Earlysville, Stephen Lee Lane and his wife, Sarah, of
Culpeper, Patricia Sandridge Henshaw of Fredericksburg, and Linda Lane Coyle and
her husband, Michael, of Salem. Also surviving are 11 great-grandchildren,
Tiffini O'Malley, Bill Henshaw and his wife, Karen, Sarah Wood, Robbie Jenkins,
Daniel Wood and his wife, Natalie, Meagan Lane, Holli Davis, Michael Jenkins,

Zachary Henshaw, and Callie Wood. Papa also leaves one special nephew, Roger

Redith Virginia Smith, 82, of Elkton, passed away on Thursday, April 2, 2009, at
Journeys Crossing in Elkton. Mrs. Smith was born March 17, 1927, in Elkton and
was the daughter of the late John R. and Bessie Lee Morris Knight. Redith
retired from General Electric in Maryland, where she worked as a parts inspector
in the Appliances Division. She was also a member of the Mercy Seat Pentecostal
Church in the Tanyard Bridge area of Elkton. On June 5, 1948, she married Floyd
Lee Davis, who preceded her in death in 1976. In 1977 she married the Rev. Owen
Smith, who also preceded her in death. She is survived by a son, Robert Lee
Davis of Elkton; three brothers, Arnie Knight, Ervin Knight and Elmer Knight;
two sisters, Gladys Knight Miller and Louise Knight Morris; a granddaughter,
Denise Fray; as well as numerous other grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by three brothers, Clarence Knight, Dewey Knight and
Wilmer Knight; and four sisters, Flossie Knight, Orie Belle Knight Lam, Margaret
Knight Armentrout and Goldie Knight. Funeral services will be conducted on
Sunday, April 5, 2009, at 2 p.m. at the Kyger Funeral Home in Elkton with the

Ricky Nelson Knight, 45, of Peake Mountain Road, Fulks Run, died Friday, Oct.
10, 2003, from injuries he suffered in an automobile accident. Mr. Knight was

Knight of Fulks Run. He was employed at Rocco Poultry for 10 years and worked at
Cerro Metal in Weyers Cave for the past four years. In addition to his father,

Robert Howard Knight, an employee of the State Highway Commission died Jan. 9th
at his home near Pantops, following an extended illness. He was a native of
Greene county, son of the late John Knight and the late Carrie McDaniel Knight,
and was 59 years of age. He married Miss Lieuwillie Meadows, of Greene, who
survives, together with four four daughters, Mrs. Verna Quillon and Mrs. George
Haney, both of Charlottesville; Mrs. J. C. Minter, of Stony Point Road, and Mrs.
R. G. Vogt (of Gordsonville and three sons, Howard Knight, of Milton, Alexander
Knight of Union Mills, and Eugene Knight at home. Mr. Knight also leaves four
sisters, Mrs. Maggie McDaniel of Elkton, Mrs. Lucy Gentry of Washington, Mrs.
Ada Shipley of Baltimore and Miss Verda Knight of Louisana and six brothers,
George Knight, of Hancock, Md., Elmer, James and Willie Knight of Reading, Pa.,
and Otis and Bernard Knight of Charlottesville. The funeral was held Jan. 10 rom
the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, the services being conducted by

Ronnie Wayne Knight, 52, of 4493 Peake Mountain Road, Fulks Run, died Thursday,
Sept. 27, 2007, at his home. Mr. Knight was born Feb. 11, 1955, in Rockingham

Knight. He worked for Marvel Poultry and Perdue Poultry for many years and most
recently gathered eggs for the John Stone Farm. He was a member of Peake

Mrs. Rose Knight, wife of Mr. Lawrence Knight, died at her home near Beldor,
Feb. 15, 1935. She had been ill with pneumonia only a few days. She was the
daughter of General and Rebecca Shiflett of the Wyatt Mountain section. She was
a member of the Episcopal Church. She was 44 years old. Mrs. Knight leaves the
following children. Mr. Warner Shiflett of Boonesville and Earl, Frank, Grady
and Rose Ellen, at home. She also leaves her mother, Mrs. Rebecca Shiflett, two
sisters, Mrs. Lewis Morris and Mrs. William Shiflett, of free union; three
brothers, Mr. Herbert Shiflett of Craigsville; Zetta and Tavy Shiflett of Wyatt
Mountain, as well as her husband. Mrs. Knight was laid to rest in Pine's Church
cemetery. A host of friends and relatives were present. The funeral service was
conducted by Rev. H. S. Knight and Capt. Tom Moss. Mr. Brill, of Elkton, was the
undertaker. Mr. Knight at the time was very ill with Plural pneumonia. His

Ruby Walton Knight, 85, of Boonesville died Monday, May 13, 1991, at her home.
Born Dec. 28, 1905, she was a daughter of the late James Thomas and Lucy Rubush
Walton. Mrs. Knight was preceded in death by her husband, Cecil R. Knight; a
sister, Edith W. Davis; and three brothers, Minor M. Walton, Nelson E. Walton
and Baby Joe Walton. Mrs. Knight is survived by one foster daughter, Vergie
Spears, and 10 foster sons, Lawrence and Sanford Kephart, William, Robert and
John Spears and Frank Gibson, all at home, Richard Garrison of Baltimore, Md.,
Charles Knight of Shenandoah, Jackie Via of Grottoes and Bobby Ray Knight of
Alexandria. She is also survived by six sisters, Helen W. Hall, Pauline W.
Corbin and Kathleen W. Lamb, all of Crozet, Nellie W. Ford and Alease W. Bruce,
both of Boonesville and Sophie W. Young of Mt. Crawford, and one brother,
Raymond L. Walton of Westminister, Md. Mrs. Knight had no children of her own,
however, in the past four decades, she and her late husband opened their homes
and hearts to 35 boys and one girl who were in the care. Mrs. Knight, a lifelong
member of the Episcopal Church, was a 1925 graduate of Blue Ridge School. She
received her higher education from the University of Virginia. From the late
1920s through the 1030s, she taught in public and Episcopal Mission Schools at
Prize Hill, Blackwell’s Hollow, Wyatt’s Mountain, Gentry Elementary, Mutton
Hollow, Haneytown, Simmons Gap, Bacon Hollow and Corbin Hollow in Madison
County. Mrs. Knight spent her life teaching and ministering to the people she
loved in rural Greene and Madison counties. She was instrumental in having the
schools in many rural areas accredited by the State Board of Education. She was
also instrumental in getting the roads in many formerly inaccessible areas
upgraded and taken into the state road maintenance system. In addition, her
efforts brought electricity and better health care to many isolated communities
where she served. In the mid-1940s, she and her husband, with the assistance of
their beloved Bishop W. Roy Mason, established Christ Church Episcopal Mission
on High Top Mountain, Greene County, where she served as teacher, minister,
social worker and friend until her retirement from service in the Episcopal
Church in 1956. She ended her teaching career at the Dyke Public Elementary
School, Greene County, where she taught children and grandchildren of many of
her former students. Following her retirement from teaching, she returned to her
home community in Boonesville, where she continued to care for foster children.
She will be remembered as a gentle person who loved the Lord and her fellow man.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, May 16, in Prize Hill Church,
Boonesville. The Rev. Alexander Livesay, the Rev. Merle Beacny and the Rev.
Herbert Parker will preside. The family will receive friends at Teague Funeral

Ruth Roach Knight, 66, of Charlottesville died Friday, Dec. 10, 1993 in a local
hospital. Born in Greene County on April 7, 1927, she was the daughter of the
late William L. and Mary Ann Roach. She was the wife of Joseph L. Knight for 43
years before his death in 1989. Mrs. Knight retired from Frank Ix & Sons after
43 years of service. She was also a member of Cecil Mission Episcopal Church.
Survivors include her two children Larry Knight and Peggy Woodson of
Charlottesville; three brothers, Wilbert, Leroy and Theodore Roach, all of
Stanardsville, one sister, Laura Morris of Elkton; six grandchildren and three
great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one granddaughter, Kimberly

Sylvia Morris Knight, 87, of Dyke, passed away at Winterhaven Assisted Living on
Tuesday, October 10, 2006. She was born on November 25, 1918, in Greene County.
She was the daughter of the late David D. Morris, Sr. and Bertha S. Morris. In
addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Ivan Knight;
two sisters, Lillian Knight and Thelma Mundy; two brothers, Clayburn Morris and
Edward Morris; two infant siblings; and a grandson, Ivan Jinks. Sylvia has been
a member of the Nortonsville Church of God most of her adult life and was very
active in the church in her younger years. Mrs. Knight worked for many years as
a seamstress in various stores in Charlottesville. Mom's love of the farm and
outdoors was evident in her work in her garden and yard. Her children and
grandchildren looked forward to Sunday dinner as much as she enjoyed having all
of her family around. She is survived by three daughters, Merium K. Jinks and
her husband, Jim, of Dyke, Marie K. Palmer and her husband, Jim, of Dyke, and
Charlotte K. Powell and her husband, Calvin, of Stanardsville. She also leaves
to cherish her memory, five granddaughters, Lisa Hastings and her husband,
James, Kelly Woolford and her husband, Eric "Peanut", Iva Bare, Kristie
Shifflett and her husband, Robbie, and Kim Norford and her husband, Matt. She is
also survived by 14 great-grandchildren who she dearly loved; one brother, David

Ted Knight, 81, a resident of 7117 Tiger Camp Road, Port Republic, died Jan. 30,
2004, at Rockingham Memorial Hospital. He had been in failing health for the
past two months. Mr. Knight was born Aug. 10, 1922, in Rockingham County, and
was the son of the late Jack and Cliffie Caldwell Knight. Mr. Knight lived and
worked in the community for 34 years. He served in the United States Army during
World War II. On May 5, 1972, he married Mary Ann Morris Knight, who survives.

Mrs. Martin Shiflett
Mrs. Martin Shiflett died Feb. 1, 1929, after an illness of three days, age 40
years. She had been a member of the Brethren church for more than 22 years, and
was always a faithful worker. Although she became separated from her church she
still retained her devotion to it in the community where she lived. She was much
devoted to her home, her family, her parents, brothers, sisters and friends. She
was indeed a loyal friend, a good mother and wife. Mrs. Shiflett was before
marriage Miss Victoria Ann Knight, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J.M. Knight, of
Nortonsville. She is survived by her husband and seven children, four boys and
three girls, Mr. Dewey Shiflett, of Baltimore; Norman, Ernest and Clifford
Shiflett at home; Mrs. Jessie Morris, of Burnleys, and Vessie and Airline
Shiflett, at home; four sisters and five brothers, Mrs. Ben Shiflett of Burnleys;
Mrs. Josh Knight, of Quinque; Mrs. Mabel Shiflett, of Pirkey; Mrs. Pearl
Shiflett, of Nortonsville; Messrs. Clyde and James Knight, of March; Will
Knight, of Profit; Isaac Knight, of Baltimore, and Ed Knight, of
Charlottesville. The body was laid to rest in Evergreen Cemetery. Rev. H.S.
Knight conducted the funeral service in the presence of a large number of
sorrowing friends and relatives. She enjoyed life greatly, but God in His wise
providence saw fit to take her from us by whom she shall never be forgotten. Our
hearts are heavy and our sorrows are great, but we must trust in our God Who

VICTORIA SHIFFLETT KNIGHT
Victoria Shifflett Knight, 94, died Saturday evening at Virginia Mennonite Home,
where she had lived five years. Mrs. Knight, who had been ill eight years, was
born Sept 2, 1887, at Brock Gap and was a daughter of the late Hiram Banks and
Ellen Crawford Shifflett. She was a member of Gospel Hill Mennonite Church and
attended Church of God of Prophecy in Harrisonburg. On Aug. 15, 1903, she
married Lanzy P. Knight, who died June 6, 1947. Surviving are three sons, Ernest
Knight of McGaheysville and Charles and Marion Knight, both of Harrisonburg; six
daughters, Florence Parks, Gernie Rhinehart and Ethel Wilfong, all of
Harrisonburg, Molly Smith of Park View, Frances Casidy of Mount Solon and Margie
Wilfong of Richmond; 27 grandchildren; 61 great-grandchildren; and several
great-great-grandchildren.

WALTER C. KNIGHT
Walter Clark Knight, 78, of Dyke died Monday en route to a Charlottesville
hospital. He was a native of Greene County and husband of the late Lillian M.
Knight. Surviving are four sons, Walter W. Knight of Alexandria, Thelbert W
Knight of Falls Church, Delford Knight of Earlysville and Jarrell Knight of
Charlottesville; six daughters, Mrs. Wilbert Morris of Stanardsville, Mrs.
Sterling Shifflett of Dyke, Mrs. Clyde French, Mrs. Richard Albert and Mrs.
William Lang Jr., all of Charlottesville, and Mrs. Henry Powell of Orange; two
brothers, Homer and Harman Knight, both of Dyke; four sisters, Mrs. Josie
Shifflett of Dyke, Mrs. Frankie Shifflett of Earlysville, Mrs. Katie Shifflett
of Stanardsville and Mrs. Emma Morris of Washington, D.C.; and 17 grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday in Mt. Olivet Church near Dyke
with interment in Evergreen Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the
Ryan Funeral Home in Quinque from 7-8:30 p.m. tonight.

WESLEY KNIGHT
Wesley Knight, a venerable and respected citizen of the Burnley community, died
July 25, 1935, at his home. Mr. Knight was an active and useful citizen and
lived uprightly. He was a member of the Church of the Brethren. His funeral was
held at home and largely attended. Rev. Henry S. Knight conducted the service
and burial was in Cedar Grove church cemetery. Active pallbearers were Dewey,
Gionning and Norman Shiflett, Bee Snow, Elmer Southard and Charlie Oliver;
flower bearers, Misses Ruby and Ruth Breeden, Bessie Shiflett, Mary Lamb,
Jeanette Seiler and Ethila Cook. Mr. Hollis M. Jarrell and the R.N. Stephens
funeral service laid Mr. Knight nicely away. Besides his widow Mr. Knight leaves
two daughters, Mrs. Fannie Morris, of Earlysville, and Mrs. Mary Geer, of
Charlottesville.

WESS KNIGHT
Wess Knight, of Stanardsville, went home to be with the lord, Tuesday, Dec. 10,
2002, with his loving family by his side. Before his departure he shared his
vision of "seeing a river as clear as crystal." We look forward to having our
family reunited there someday. He leaves to cherish his memory, his wife, Mary;
two sons, Wess Knight and Kevin Knight and his wife, Amber; five daughters and
son-in-laws, Cathy and L.A. Eppard, Norma and Anthony Branham, Ann and Roger
Spencer, Gwen and Bunkey Maupin and Nancy and Alvin Deane; 14 grand children;
one great-grandchild; six brothers, Jesse, Casper, Marvin, Elvin, Lyman and
Alton Knight; five sisters, Lizzie Long, Eunice Deane, Helen Cabel, Lorene Simms
and Katherine Branel. He was preceded in death by his parents, Wilbur and Allie
Knight; a sister, Lelia Snow; and four brothers, Glenwood, Parker, Lindsay and
Haywood Knight. A funeral service will be held at noon Thursday at the Ryan
Funeral Chapel, Quinque, with interment at Holly Memorial Gardens. Pastor Dennis
Collier will officiate. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today
at the funeral home. The family suggests memorial contributions be given to
Hospice of the Piedmont, 1490 Pantops Mountain Place, Suite 200,
Charlottesville, Va. 22911.

WILLIAM NORRIS KNIGHTING SR.

William Norris Knighting Sr., 72, of Troy, was taken from us suddenly on Monday,
January 24, 2011, after battling cancer. He was preceded in death by his father,
Shelton Norris Knighting Sr.; and three children, Shelton Norris Knighting Jr.,
William Norris Knighting Jr. and Lori Davis. He leaves behind to cherish his
memory, his mother, Odessa Knighting of Troy; stepfather, Edsol Mays of Troy;
three daughters; Felicia Knighting of Scottsville, Joyce Anderson of Fluvanna
and Sharron Gibson of Georgia; three sons, Terry Lewis of Ohio, Timmy Polson of
Richmond, and Michael Davis of Fork Union. A very special son-in-law, Michael
Hicks of Scottsville; two sisters, Carole Woodson of Troy and Ellen Brown of
Wirtz; two brothers, Roger Knighting of Snow Hill, North Carolina, and Paul
Knighting of Wilson, North Carolina; countless grandchildren, great-
grandchildren, nieces, nephews and friends. A graveside service will be held at
the family home place.

WILMER LEE KNIGHTING, JR.
Wilmer Lee Knighting Jr., 72, of Madison, died Saturday, April 5, 2003, at the
Autumn Care of Madison. Born August 24, 1930, in Criglersville, he was the son
of the late Wilmer Lee Knighting Sr., and Nina Shifflett Knighting. Mr.
Knighting was a Marine veteran of the Korean War and loved to hunt and fish. He
is survived by one daughter, Linda McPeak and her husband, Gary of Madison; one
son, Wilmer Lee Knighting III, of Madison; three brothers, Leroy Knighting and
Bobby Knighting, both of Criglersville, and Homer Knighting of Greene; one
sister, Sylvia Utz of Criglersville; three grandchildren, Daniel Lloyd Jr.,
Kevin Lee Knighting, and Brian Edward Knighting, all of Madison. Graveside
funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, April 9, 2003, at the
Criglersville Cemetery, conducted by Mr. McKinley Jenkins. The family will
receive friends today from 7 to 8 p.m. at the Preddy Funeral Home in Madison.

WINFORD WAYNE KNIGHT
Winford Knight Dies In Elkton Crash
Winford Wayne Knight, 23, of Elkton died Saturday, May 25, 1968, in a single-car
accident on US 340 about one mile north of Elkton. A native of Greene County, he
was born February 12, 1945, the son of John Walter Knight and the late Mrs.
Lillian Morris Knight. He leaves his wife, Mrs. Lorraine Morris Knight; a
step-daughter; Ginger Morris of Elkton; four brothers: Sgt. Walter W. Knight of
El Paso, Texas, Jarrell Knight of Charlottesville, Delford Knight of
Earlysville, and Thelbert Knight of Arlington; and six sisters: Mrs. Wilbert
Morris of Stanardsville, Mrs. Sterling Shifflett of Dyke, Mrs. Henry Powell of
Orange, and Mrs. Clyde French, Mrs. Richard Albert and Mrs. William Lang of
Charlottesville. Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon, May 28, at two
o’clock at the Evergreen Church of the Brethren, Dyke, with burial in the church
cemetery.

WINSTON KNIGHT
Winston Knight, 27, of Stanardsville died Friday, July 30, 1976, in
Charlottesville. Born in Greene County, he was the son of Jesse G. and Ruby Mae
Knight of Stanardsville. Besides his parents, Mr. Knight is survived by two
daughters, Elizabeth D. Knight and Tina Michelle Knight, both of Stanardsville;
one brother, Samuel Knight of Stanardsville; two sisters, Thelma Knight and
Velma Knight, both of Stanardsville. Services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday
at the First Bible Baptist Church. Interment will be in the Mt. Herman Mennonite
Cemetery. Arrangements are being handled by the Ryan Funeral Home of Quinque.
Mr. Knight was the husband of the late Gail Diane Knight.
