SIGOURNEY DEANE SHIFFLETT
About 6 o'clock Feb 28, 1934, Mrs. Sigourney Shifflett of Newport News, passed
peacefully away at her home. Mrs. Shifflett was the widow of G.W. Shifflett who
preceded her to the grave three years ago. These people formerly lived at Lydia
and later acquired a wanderlust and lived near Charlottesville, Bedford and
Gordonsville, finally going to Florida, where Mr. Shifflett died. They were good
people and very much missed in our community when they left. They took quite an
interest in the church, schools and civic areas of the community and this writer
still feels a great sympathy for the bereaved children who were once her pupils
in school. Mrs. Shifflett was born 3, April 1864, near Swift Run. Her parents
were Morgan and Susan Deane. Mrs. Shifflett is survived by two brothers, Snell
and Daniel Deane of Elkton, and two sisters Mrs. Wesley Meadows of McMullan and
Mrs. Kell Eppard of Elkton. Seven children were born to their union, one dying
in infancy. Surviving are Harvey L. Shifflett and Elmer T. Shifflett of Detroit
Mich; Herman W. Shifflett of Altoons Pa.; Mrs. Virginia Callahan of Lynchburg
and Mrs. Maysie P. Freeman and Mrs. Violette Eldred of Newport News who was
living with her mother at the time of her death. A nice letter from the oldest
son, Harvey L., was appreciated very much in which he described the passing away
of his mother. He said she had suffered a paralytic stroke only a few hours
preceding her death, which was quite a shock to these children, all so scattered
and far away that none could be with her except Violette and Maysie. May they
all so live that when called away from this earthly habitation, they may meet
mother in a better land free from all sorrow and pain. Mrs. Shiflett was a good
kind wife and mother and was beloved by all who knew her. Mrs. Shiflett was
buried by the side of her husband in Woodson Cemetery, Stanardsville. Funeral
services were conducted by Rev. Raleigh W. Burnett March 3 in Stanardsville
Methodist Church. All her children and in-laws were present to pay their token
to mother.
